Nice compact size for your backback

Rating:****
Spent 6 days in an adventure camp in Fresno, CA. I could see the mosquitoes and insects flying and crawling about but I didn't get one single bite. I've tried other drugstore type products and have always gotten bitten. I like the compactness of the tube which was nice since it was easy to put into my fanny pack during my hike and other activities. I also purchase the REI 100% juice and applied a small amount of it on top of this product to be double sure to protect me. It worked!! I shared both products with my friends and no one got bit! :o) The only reason I didn't give this a 5* was the price.

Best there is!

Rating:****
This is the only stuff I'll use! That said, it is expensive, so the rest of my body is covered in long sleeves and long pants. (I just use two dots to cover my face, neck, and hands.) I've used this working in the tropics of Costa Rica, swamps of SW Florida, tundra of Alaska, wetlands of South Carolina, and all throughout Argentina. It holds up! (Only downside is that I always feel a little icky eating with deet on my hands.)

The Best

Rating:*****
Because it is so long lasting, a lower concentration of DEET is effective in this product. (Most insect repellents need to start out at a high concentration of DEET as it "decays" very quickly). The lower concentration is more skin friendly, and it lasts and lasts so you don't have to reapply it often. I have used this all through Southeast Asia. One time, I was swarmed on by a cloud of mosquitoes for 20 minutes- no bites!!

The best insect repellent I have used!

Rating:*****
Most of the insect repellents I had used in the past were aerosol or pump spray, difficult to apply without wasting spray, and had a horrible chemical odor. Ultrathon is easy to use, none of it is wasted, and it has a mild but pleasant outdoor odor. You can easily cover areas which are hard to cover with sprays. Most retailers sell the 2 oz. tube for about [$] which is pricey, but well worth it.

Great product

Rating:*****
I love this product!! I've used it in Africa and during day hikes in the Sierra Nevadas. It's long lasting and works well, even in the most mosquito-ridden areas. It's a small bottle, but it goes a long way since it spreads easily. My only problem with it was how greasy it was, especially when you apply it to your face. However, it works so well that I would definitely buy this product again.

Excellent product

I'm surprised to see the bad reviews. No product is 100% effective, but my colleagues and I use this product in tropical disease "hot zones" in the Caribbean and Western Africa and have had no mosquito problems. Dressing properly matters too, but I personally don't know anyone who disavows this product.

Negative Reviews:

Poor protection against malaria

Rating:*
I bought this to use in rural Haiti because it was the number one recommendation of the Department of Health. It was my hope that this would help curb the appetite of the malaria-carrying mosquitos common there. While I slathered up with this lotion, my colleagues all sprayed OFF! on. At the end of the day, I was the one itching welt-sized mosquito bites, while they had hardly been touched (although one of them already had malaria and therefore wouldn't have a big reaction to the bites). Luckily, the anti-malarial drugs I was on were effective.

OK but not Super Repellent

Rating:**
I went through a whole bottle in 3 days in the Uintas of Utah and it seemed like I had to apply it more than I should. I think the REI jungle juice is more effective especially for the price.

Not my favorite bug repelant

Rating:***
I bought this for a recent trip to Yellowstone. The bugs where not all that fierce, but I was hoping for all day protection when I put it on in the morning. First I found this to be too greasy, I was using hiking poles and my hands where slippery for hours. Then when the bugs came back out in the afternoon I had to put on more product to keep them off me. I wound up using Jungle Juice Plus spray the most and was pretty happy. I won't be using UltraThon again.
