These boots are good for EVERYTHING

I am moving to Africa later this year so I purchased these in advance thinking I needed to break them in. Well I can't take them off. I wear them around town (they are too cute I get tons of compliments). I just went backpacking this weekend in 6+ inches of snow, 1200 ft mountain climb, 2 nights in sub zero weather. Besides not being insulated very well, they were perfect. As long as I was moving my feet they stayed nice and warm with just 2 layers of socks. I kept them in the tent at night so they didn't freeze. My travel companion actually purchased the same boots unknowingly and hers froze but in about 10 minutes of walking they were not stiff. My companion is a very experienced 4 season hiker and she said she gives them a 10. They have great traction but be careful on snow and ice they are a little slippery. Im looking forward to hiking in these guys in the spring. These boots fit like a glove the minute I put them on. You will not go wrong with these boots.

I love these boots! Got them for moderate hiking in Ohio's excellent state parks in cold, snowy weather, and they are up to the task. I liked them so well that I convinced my daughter to get a pair, too. I have the Astral Aura and she has the Deep Teal. I do recommend going up a half size if you can. My daughter wears a 9; we exchanged her's for a 9 1/2. I wear an 11 to begin with, so it's not an option for me, but they work well with one good pair of hiking socks. Good support for feet and ankles, and a waterproof lining is a real plus. My daughter stepped in a puddle on a warmer day and survived with dry feet. This is my second pair of Ahnus. I have a pair of Zen for summer wear; they offer good support and foot protection, but have a flip-flops feel. This is definitely a go-to brand for me now.

Need to be broken in

Like a couple of the other reviewers, the tongue area around the ankle was VERY uncomfortable for me at first. I couldn't walk in these without pain, so I laced only the bottoms and kept the top loose. After breaking these in for days, slowly tightening the ankle part with the weird tongue over several walks, they finally now feel quite comfortable with the tongue conforming properly against my ankle. These are super lightweight compared to my other waterproof hikers (the pair weighs as much as one of my other shoes). I do not believe these were intended for any "real" hiking across rougher terrain and while carrying a big pack, as they look more like "urban hikers." Good for slush and puddles on an even/paved trail, light day hikes, that sort of thing.

Great pair of hiking boots

It's hard to find a black hiking boot. I have a pair of Keen's that I wore all winter last winter, but they only come in some shade of brown. I started searching for a black version and Ahnu was the only brand I could find that had black. I was afraid they wouldn't be as great as my Keen's. And I never heard of them. I wanted something to wear everyday and not have to change into snow boots when I take the dogs out during the winter. These I can wear inside and out and feel comfortable. I could walk all day in them from day one.

Love them!

Lightweight & flexible. I feel like I'm still in touch with the ground I'm hiking on but my feet are still protected from rocks and uneven surfaces. I had been looking for a ankle high hiking boot for quite a while and these felt great in the store and sure enough, when I took them hiking for the first time I loved them. I have pretty small, narrow feet with a relatively high arch. The problem I had in the past with hiking shoes/boots were either too wide or heel slippage. These boots had none of those problems! Plus great colors.

This is my first ever pair of hiking/winter boots, so I don't have anything to compare it to other than the pair of North Face boots I also ordered but ended up returning. The vibram soles on these are great, vs. the North Face Arctic Guide which are more winter-specific and didn't have enough traction. I've walked around on dry as well as icy and slushy sidewalks in cities in these Ahnu Sugerpines, and also hiked up snowy mountains in Iceland in these boots, and they've been comfortable in all those conditions.

Ahnu Sugarpine Hiking Boots

Love my Merrils but wanted a lighter weight boot for travel. I have narrow feet, high arches and desire ankle support for stability. Other than wearing around house and short two mile RT in them to gym to test out, I wore all this past weekend in San Juan Islands for first time. Very comfortable! Relatively water proof. It rained entire weekend and walked through some small puddles and streams. Feet stayed 99% dry. Debated between purple and teal and got teal. Thus far very pleased with purchase!

My Daughter Loves These

Bought these for my middle school daughter's first backpacking trip. They were great from the get go; only had time to wear them around school for a couple of days before the hike, but no problems with blisters or anything. She says they were very comfortable, stable on the trail carrying a pack, and stayed waterproof even when she stepped ankle-deep in a leftover snowbank. The stylish colors are an extra bonus.

I love these boots. Best purchase in shoes that I have made in a while. They are very comfortable. They kept my feet warm and snug. I normally wear a size 10 but followed the advice of others and ordered a half size up. I got them for the wet weather we are having in MD. Just an all around awesome boot!

Great from day one!

Bought these yesterday for inaugural Christmas Eve hike. With trepidation (and backup moleskin) we tackled a 4 mile trail rocky trail hike with 1300 feet of elevation change - no break-in for the boots. And the results were fantastic. I had no hotspots, no blisters. And I felt very grounded coming down the mountain even though I was getting tired.

Negative Reviews:

Not very waterproof

I was very excited to find lightweight waterproof hiking boots that were also affordable but the first day hiking in them I got caught in a rainstorm. Initially, I was happy to be in my new boots. Unfortunatly, they did not hold up at all. Once I took them off, my feet were very wet and cold. As far as traction they were great.

Hurt my Feet

I walked around in these for 6 hours and the tops of my feet were red and swollen that evening and the next day. The tongue design is strange in that it folds in on itself on the right and left sides, creating painful "hot spots" where there should be none. They rubbed and irritated the top my feet with every step.
dsrtgrl at REI on 09/09/2013

Not durable enough hiking

Boot's base consists of a few different materials, one of which is too weak and unreliable. Once I stepped on a sharp rock it got bulged. And I also noticed that it wears off very quickly.

Neutral Reviews:

I'll try something different next time

For the most part these are comfortable, however if you don't leave the top laces a little loose they rub your ankles
