Nice but fits small

I've been using these for a month now. There are groomed hiking trails near my house, and I have had no issues with these.

The waterproof fabric is eVent (not Gortex). It hasn't rained hard, so no comment on the waterproof of these. Just note that the level of 'waterproof' stops at the height of the shoe tongue as water will be able to seep through at that point.

I took them travelling with me for a short 10 day vacation in a urban environment. I had issues with arch support as I have low arches. I bought the SuperFeet Berry insoles and my feet were a bit happier with those. I did have one callous on the side of one of my feet (one of my feet is maybe a hair too large).

These shoes fit small. Buy at least half a size bigger, if not a full size, if you are using US Sizing. The European sizing chart is true. My feet in "tight" fitting (i.e. climbing shoes) is a 39. I bought a 39.5 (US Size 9) but possibly could have done with a 40 if I wanted a looser fit as I normally have bought US 8.5 size.

Love these shoes, but....

For four months I used these shoes every time I went for a walk. I averaged about 20,000 steps per day. These are THE most comfortable walking shoes I've ever owned. Since I usually have my dog with me I wanted a water proof shoe for walking in wet grass. For four months, these shoes kept my feet nice and dry. Then the seam at the toe started separating from the sole where it was glued and no amount of shoe goo helped. The shoes lost their waterproof-ness at that point. REI was great about replacing the shoe since there is a 1-year manufacturer's warranty on them. I suggest ordering a 1/2 size up if you want to wear the shoe with anything other than a lightweight summer sock as they seem to me to run about 1/2 size small. The shoes have a very sporty look to them and medium bulk so you don't look like you are wearing boats. Despite the seam issue, I will continue to buy this shoe because it is so comfortable.

Love, Love, Love this shoe!

I've been on the search for the perfect dog walking shoe for a while. My dog and I walk about 5 to 6 miles a day and I need a solid shoe. Most have some flaw that, over time, meant that I wouldn't buy them again. Not this shoe. The Ahnu Montara grips my heel, and feels lightweight yet sturdy. I turned these into slip-on shoes by adding speed laces. I've worn them in wet and muddy conditions and my feet remained dry. I feel they run a smidge small in length--for me about 1/4 size. I normally wear size 8.5 and the shoe feels really comfortable on level ground. On a downhill though, I notice my toes do bump up against the front. I plan to buy another pair in a larger size for winter so I can wear thicker socks. I highly recommend this shoe.

Light and Waterproof Trail Shoe

I've had the shoes for approximately 3 months and use them on varied terrain for intense hiking workouts 6 days p/wk. The left shoe fits perfect and is quite comfortable. However, the right shoe, while it fits well, produces considerable pain from chaffing on my upper heel at the shoe's Achilles notch. After 3 months of wear the Achilles notch is still not broken in and I need to wear MoleFoam padding on my right heel every time I wear the shoes. Other than that, the shoes are light weight, comfortable, waterproof, rugged, and have good traction. I have narrow feet and they fit well. May not be well suited for wide feet, unless wide is offered.

Versatile, comfortable--yet looks good!

I bought this shoe the day before I was leaving for a two week trip to Italy, where I was going to be doing a lot of walking. I wanted a shoe that was nice looking, not a tennis shoe, was comfortable, a little rain resistant, cushioned--yet had good support. I knew I was taking a chance getting a shoe right before the trip, but I couldn't have chosen a shoe that was more perfect. I did a lot of walking and my feet had no hot spots at all. Absolutely love the shoe. I did buy it 1/2 size bigger--my usual size felt a little tight.

Perfect for my needs

I purchased these hiking shoes just days before I needed to put them to use. The sales rep told me they would be good to use right out of the box, no wearing in necessary. He was right.

I hiked in the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia for 4 days using these shoes. I didn't get any blisters, they were comfortable, and I definitely put them to work.

I also used these shoes for the rest of my travels in Ethiopia (3 full weeks), they held up great and were really comfortable. I am excited to put them to use again this summer!

LOVER!

I bought these hikers because a) my backpacker friends like the brand, b) they're lightweight, c) they're cute and d) I found them in the scratch n dent sale like new. I have to say that I love them. Aside from a little tenderness in my left heel after a long walk/hike (3+ miles), they're awesome. I'll probably just use my orthopedic inserts in them. I also think the laces stay tied just fine without having to double knot them. I'd give them 5 stars, but they're just a hair shy of being as cute as my old favorite hikers. But they're still cute!

can't say enough about these hiking shoe

I wear these shoes everyday even to the gym. I was experiencing some discomfort on the bottoms of my feet and decided to head to REI and after trying on several pairs I selected these. I wore them home and I wear them almost everyday. I even took my sister down as she had some pain on the bottoms of her feet and also purchased a pair of the same Ahnu hiking shoe. The local REI didn't have the same shoe so my sister got her shoes from a CA REI. We both have narrow heels and these shoes fit great.

Great in the snow alongside a glacier!

Bought this shoe for a hiking in Alaska. I got it three weeks before the trip to break it in, they were immediately comfortable. I usually wear an 8 but sized up to 8 1/2 for thicker socks. I was worried I didn't go up enough but they ended up fitting well. They were a bit hot to wear in the 100 degree weather of AZ but in Alaska they kept my feet warm & dry hiking in snow, they were great in a down pour and they were comfortable to wear on the dry days.

Great Alternative to Hiking Boots!!

I bought these as an alternative to hiking boots to lighten the load on my feet. I could not be more pleased. They are super comfortable and mold to the shape of my feet. I added memory foam inserts on top of my custom orthotics. I no longer have tired, achy feet after long hikes. My heel does slip out of the left shoe, but I learned a new way to tie my shoes that keeps my heel firmly in the heel cup. Great shoe!!!

Negative Reviews:

Hiking shoe keeps coming loose

I bought these hiking shoes for a month-long vacation in South America that involved both urban and wilderness adventures. I hike at home in boots, but they would have been excessive for the trip I was doing. I was looking for a versatile shoe that would be suitable for nearly everything I wanted to do but that wouldn't add too much weight to my luggage. (I lived out of a backpack, and the only other footwear I took on the trip was a pair of Chaco sandals.)

Pros: The shoes aren't heavy and didn't need breaking in. They're also attractive and can go with many types of casual clothes (I got them in brown). They were sturdy enough for a three-day trek in the Andes Mountains and some day hikes, but they weren't too bulky for wandering through cities.

Cons: The biggest drawback (and it was a significant one) is that I couldn't get these shoes to stay tight on my feet. I would pull the laces tight and double-knot them, but they invariably came loose, and I regularly had to untie them and tighten them again many times throughout the day. I've never experienced this issue with any other outdoorsy footwear I've owned. I don't know if the problem is as simple as replacing the laces (I haven't tried that yet) or if it's reflective of a design flaw in the shoe itself.

In addition, though I haven't gotten the blisters other reviewers have described, I have developed calluses in the same area (between my heel and ankle, where the top back of the shoe is). It sounds like this is an issue with how the shoe is constructed, so look out for it if you're thinking of buying these shoes.

All in all, my rating of two stars is based mostly on the annoyance of constantly having to tighten the laces (not fun with a heavy backpack on) and secondarily on the rubbing that causes calluses.

Cuts into ankle, but good specs

Cons: This shoe cuts into one of my ankles in a way so painful that it renders the pair unusable. My other foot feels fine in the shoe - very comfortable. This shoe probably fits some feet, but not all. My foot is not unusual in any way that I know of, so anyone with my common foot shape may also find this shoe uncomfortable.

Pros: I bought these online because of their superior specs - Vibram outsoles, eVent waterproofing (comparable to Gortex), dual-density EVA midsole, urethane shank, waterproof nubuck leather and the fact that it wasn't made of many pieces stitched together that might later split. This isn't listed in the specs, but they also have a partially gusseted tongue and great laces. I wish I could wear them. Now I have to pay to ship them back.

Sizing: My normal shoe size is a 9. My Merrels were a 9.5, so I tried that size first, but I ended up having to get these in a 10.

Disclaimer: I gave two stars instead of one because on one foot, the shoe felt fantastic; I think they could work for some feet.

Can't wear; causes Achilles pain

I bought these shoes for light hiking on Sierra mountain trails - was looking for a comfortable, durable waterproof shoe with great traction. After wearing for first time outside (not even hiking yet), got blisters on both heels where top back of shoe meets achilles tendon. Wrote this off to being a new shoe, needing to break in, etc. I put bandaids on both heels and also added heel inserts to elevate my foot and continued to wear them intermittently (should have returned them immediately at this point!!) thinking the feel of shoe would improve. It never did. I have an average size 8 medium width foot and have never had this issue with any hiking, tennis, walking, etc type shoe. I feel this is a design flaw. The back of the shoe heel is inclined too far towards the front of the shoe and this causes exteme discomfort on the achilles. Others have also reported the same problem. Don't buy this shoe until this is fixed - you will be sorry! I want a refund from AHNU!

Wish I could love them

These shoes caught my eye in the store because of their look and they are definitely waterproof. The shoes do run small, so I got a half size up. They felt fine in the store. I wore them to school due to a later ecology lab through the woods and quickly realized they are poorly designed! They are fairly rigid and though my left shoe fits perfectly, my right shoe is just uncomfortable and it rubs the back of my heel causing pain. I am constantly having to untie and retie the laces because they become too loose very quickly. They are comfy padding wise and I love the material; really the biggest issues are with the design and production of the shoes. Great traction, look, feel and sturdy soles. They are just not wearable!!!
skipeople at REI on 01/01/2013

Cute shoes but loose in the heels

I am going to visit the store and try a smaller size in this shoe. Even with added insoles and heel grips I still feel my heel slipping out of the shoe with each step. I am in my shoes about 12 hours a day so I need a shoe that is comfortable, durable, and gives great support. This shoe is also rather rigid and I feel like I am slapping the floor with each step. Might try the hiking boots instead. Great material that breaths - your foot will not feel hot!

Neutral Reviews:

Good for walking, not for long hikes

I love how these look and fit. However, I cannot waer them all day or for intense hikes. The comfort only lasts a few hours and the soles are not hard enough to protect my feet from rocks. They're great for walking around or running errands. Waterproofing is just ok. While my feet did not get wet, the suede outer stays wet for a while and warps a little. These are good shoes, but not great for an enthusiastic outdoors woman. Knowing all of this, I would recommend them. They are very cute and extremely lightweight.
Flyha at REI on 12/12/2013

Good walking shoes

These are very lightweight nice looking shoes, however, they rub blisters on my little toes, and I believe the toe box needs to be bigger.
