All the benefits of Altra's award-winning minimalist running shoe are back with a hot, new look in the Altra Instinct 1.5 barefoot-inspired sneaker. This men's athletic shoe boasts a quick-drying air mesh upper with a Dri-Lex collar lining and full-length, streamlined seaming construction lining to wick moisture and reduce chafing. The distinctive foot-shaped toe box gives toes more room to work properly; the Zero Drop™ platform allows a more natural, efficient foot strike that helps reduce joint impact, shin splints and forefoot pain. A dual-density, 5mm cushioned footbed rides atop a 12mm, dual-layer cushioned midsole providing essential shock absorption and responsiveness. Built on a male-specific last, the Altra Instinct 1.5 runner is finished with a 4.5mm blown rubber outsole to provide a natural, all-purpose traction system for a variety of surfaces from road to treadmill to trails.

Collar:

  • Drilex collar lining provides some cushioning to keep your ankle comfortable during extended runs

Midsole:

  • Midsole features an Altrabound top layer that feels springy so the midsole returns energy to help you glide through your stride
  • Midsole uses 12mm of EVA to provide cushioning that reduces impact on your ankle and knees
  • Together, the midsole and outsole make for a 22mm stacked height from the surface of the ground to the bottom of your foot

Fabric:

  • Synthetic liner feels smooth against your foot thanks to seamless construction that eliminates seam bulges

Fit:

  • SD3-M last gives this shoe a contoured, foot-shaped design that makes for the most natural fit and allows your toes to relax and spread out naturally

Support and Cushioning:

  • Shoe ships with two types of insoles: a 5mm thick, Sculpted insole for maximum support and a 3mm thick, Strengthen insole for a more minimalist feel
  • Zero Drop™ with Full Cushioning Innovative, Foot-Shaped Design

Traction and Grip:

  • FootPod outsole is 4.5mm thick, offers moderate flexibility to complement the natural-running style of this shoe, and provides ample traction on road and off

Upper:

  • Quick Dry air mesh upper allows cool air to move across your foot, and it keeps this shoe lightweight

Features:

  • Zero Drop Platform (0mm) features a 1:1 heel-to-forefoot height ratio, which means that your heel and forefoot sit exactly the same height from the ground

Over the past decade, the world of running has taken a more natural direction, and with it, shoe designs have adapted to more accurately support a natural running style. The Altra Men's Instinct 1.5 Running Shoe is a perfect example of such a change. Designed for both on and off road running, the Instinct features a zero drop platform (heel and forefoot are equa-distant from the ground), and the upper and sole have a distinctive shape that matches the contour of your foot. Add to this shape and platform a moderate 22mm stack height and EVA cushioning, and you've got a shoe that allows your foot to relax, absorbs shock, and maintains a natural, anatomic position that complements your body alignment. It's a no-pain, all-gain type of natural running shoe.

Reviews:

This shoe occupies a nice niche among my running shoes. It is a true zero drop, but has much more cushion than say a Vibram or a New Balance MT10. As such, I like it for longer runs. The sole is certainly designed for road rather than trail - but you have a lot of rubber on the road with the shallow tread. Finally, the toebox is notably wider than most of my shoes (reminds me of my Dalbello touring boots) -- and I felt the difference as reduced friction between my toes. (Photo compares the profiles of the NB MT 10, Altra Instinct, Inov8 Trailroc 235, PI EM Trail N2, PI EM Road M3, and PI Peak II.)

I love the wide toe box. I have a narrow foot and don't need a wide toe box, but with these shoes my feet have room to relax while running and post run lounging around. I'm not fighting to get these shoes off my feet after a run like other running shoes. I wear a 11.5 in this brand and a size 11 in Adidas.
