Altra Zero Drop Lone Peak 1.5 Reviews:

I bought these for trail running in the rain/mud, because the Torins don't have a good profile. Like all Altra shoes, they run one size too small, but unlike other Atra shoes, these do not come with two pairs of insoles. The insoles delivered with them have arch support, so I had to use my stinky Torin insoles on my first run with the Lone Peak 1.5, and was not happy about it. Apart from this one flaw, the shoes are perfect. They have great grip, hold up well in the rain, the toe box is high and wide, and the ankles do not rub against them. I will be getting a pair of dirty girl gaiters to wear with them - the closeable velcro tab in the back is genius! A word of caution: I went on an 8 hour hike up a steep mountain with them on, and my soles were a little sore from the rocks after.

I'm really happy with these so far. I got them for ultra light backpacking, where I will be hiking 20-35 miles a day with a 10-20 pound pack, for multiple days. I like the wide toe box (it looks rectangular from above) and am able to really spread my toes. I will have to play with the lacing because I do slip forward a little on down hills. The grip is very sticky and secure. I felt like I had a lot of push off in my stride. I love the velcro on the back for my gaiters--just a little but helpful touch. For street shoes I wear a 6 or 6.5 usually. For most back country shoes I wear an 8 (I like them big). For these, I wear a 7.5 since they seem designed to be a bit roomy.

These shoes are awesome! At first they feel a half size too big until you begin to hike in them, then the engineering all makes sense. The larger toe box allows your feet to spread out and take the uneven terrain naturally. The rock plate is great and protects my feet better than the old fashioned hiking shoes which would not give and roll my ankles on rocky trails. The only thing is I have skinny feet, so I replaced the laces right away with elasticized laces which keeps them snug at all times. Wool socks in the winter and my feet stay cozy. It always seems that the truly comfortable shoes are ugly, so why should these be any different? These shoes have more than lived up to my expectations!

The sizing in the Altras keeps me guessing. I normally wear a size 7½. I have the Altra Torin in a size 8, which I love and has helped me get back into running now that a bunion is starting to cause problems. I have to return the size 8 Lone Peak, however, for being too big. I have not tried the 7½ yet but it seems these shoes, unlike other Altras, run true to size.

This is a beautiful shoe, just a bit too big. I will order one size down. My previous Altras allowed me to hike in Colorado without a cramp in my foot or toes! This is a first in 30 years of hiking! Thanks, Altra!
