Arc'teryx Thorium AR Jacket -

The Arc'teryx Men's Thorium AR Jacket succeeds at giving you maximum warmth and versatility in a mid-layer while limiting weight. They have expertly mapped two different types of insulation across areas of need: Coreloft synthetic in moisture-prone zones (hem, collar, sleeves and underarms) and 750 fill down in the core and arms. With such mapping precision they should have called this the Rand McNally Jacket.... but Arc'teryx never listens to my jacket name suggestions. The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finished exterior will shed some moisture so the Thorium AR can handle itself on its own, but really shines as an insulating layer under a shell.

What's good for the goose is good for you, and Arc'teryx joins the feather-fete with its Thorium/Cerium family of jackets. The Men's Thorium AR Jacket is a durable, flexible piece combining goose down and Coreloft insulation to meet your winter outwear demands. Wear it to and from the office, hiking to the final summit of the season, or under a shell while blasting through waist-deep powder in single-digit sunshine. Regardless of how you spend your time, the Thorium jacket protects you from the cold, alone or under a hardshell.
Winter weather is not an equal opportunity attacker. Typically, precipitation is a vertically occurring event, and as such, your belly barely sees the action. Consequently, the designers at Arc'teryx put 750-fill European grey goose down in the torso, relying on the odds that you won't be prone when the blizzard hits. Likewise, the shoulders and collar are filled with Coreloft insulation, as those areas tend to shoulder the load of exposure when it comes to rain and snow. Because synthetic insulation resists water and dries quickly when wet, the strategic placement of both natural and synthetic insulators offer you the best chance of staying warm in the event of unexpected moisture.
The non-stretch Colibri mini-ripstop nylon is treated with DWR so when flying flurries or slushy rain lands on the jacket, the water beads up on the surface rather than being absorbed by the fabric. While you won't stay dry in a deluge, the water-resistant nylon outer provides time for you to find more forcible shelter. When you're packing for adventure, on the mountain or in Sweden for Vaffeldagen, space and weight matter. The one-two punch of synthetic and down insulation lightens the load, as this jacket only weighs a little over 12 ounces and crams into the included stuff sack with ease. Whether you sit at the 50-yard line in Buffalo, sled with your 5-year-old, or snowboard with your college buddies, the Thorium jacket keeps you warm, on its own or as a layer.

Arc'teryx is dangerous to your wallet

Had a tough time deciding between the hooded version and this one. I decided this one would be better because it's a little more casual and can be worn around the office. If needed, I'll put on a beanie.

So far, I've only tested it in lower 40's in wind/rain (live in Seattle). In these conditions, I absolutely love it. I feel "room temp" when wearing it. Never too warm or too cold. I have a giant North Face down jacket as well that I'm always too hot in. This one has a nice balance.

Another thing I like about this one compared to other down jackets out there is that it doesn't have that odd shiney look.

I now own two Arc'teryx products. I'm blown away by the quality of Arc'teryx and while it costs a lot, I feel that it's so well made that it last a while. I high recommend this for anyone looking for warm casual jacket and doesn't want to feel "bulky" and uncomfortable. While I know this isn't how Arc'teryx intended this product, I haven't tested it in hiking conditinos yet so I can't really comment on that. But it's amazing for casual wear. Maybe I'll update my review later once I go hiking.

My favorite jacket ever

I researched this jacket purchase a lot and finally came to the Thorium AR. I tried it on in the REI store and could immediately feel the quality that Arcteryx is known for. The fit is unbelievable; I feel like I'm not wearing anything when I move around. It is super warm but not too bulky and awkward. It looks great; my girlfriend loves when I wear it. And finally, the outer fabric is strong enough that it wasn't ripped the other day when I was out volunteering at Habitat for Humanity (carrying sharp objects sometimes).

I chose the blue style because I like the two-tone style. The two-tone is where the synthetic fill is used. Great idea!

I'm 6'0" 215lbs and the XL fits me well.

Like I said, I love this jacket. I wear it almost every day now. I couldn't say a single bad thing about it.

Top Quality Down

There's a reason I always return to Arcteryx for outdoor clothing - the quality of material and construction. I tried this down jacket for a 3-day backpacking trip to the Smokies and it was perfect. The athletic fit allows good movement, even with a backpack, and the provided stuff sack is convenient when you need to peel a layer. No cold/hot spots and the loft didn't shift around inside the fabric. This jacket does run a little tight; so putting fleece layers underneath makes for a really snug fit which may bother some folks. Exceptional quality with the workmanship (seams, zipper, cuffs, etc.) and the fit all around is true to size.

Great all around down jacket

Great mid layer down jacket. Heavier and warmer and more durable than a Patagonia Down Sweater yet not as heavy as some of the down jackets out there that can cause you to overheat.

Great quality and nice fitting and feeling down jacket with synthetic insulation strategically placed.

Super Light

I wanted a ridiculously light jacket for all manner of activities. This was does the trick. My wife thought the box was shipped empty.

For it's size it's quite warm. Packs down really small. Will be perfect for cool and dry camping.

Great Jacket!

A great jacket for daily use to and from work, and also great for weekend hikes with the dogs. The fit is great both in the body and arm length-I would highly recommend this product!
