Although you may have trouble believing this, the Arc'teryx Women's Beta AR Jacket is both incredibly tough and surprisingly supple. This is achieved through the use of the latest generation of 3-layer GORE-TEX®, the Pro Shell series, and Arc'teryx's industry leading construction techniques. 380NR GORE-TEX® 3-layer Pro is used for the torso and sleeves, and highly abrasion resistant 480NR GORE-TEX® 3-layer Pro is used on the shoulders and elbows. While one fabric is a bit tougher than the other, they both offer a breakthrough in breathability, rugged strength, and durable waterproofing. These fabrics also have strong woven backers that bond better than ever to laminated components and narrow seam tape. Laminated zips eliminate the need for bulky zipper flaps, tiny GORE-TEX® seam tape doesn't diminish the jacket's supple feel, and overall the Arc'teryx Beta AR jacket for women is significantly lighter and more breathable than if traditional construction techniques were used.

great jacket, no complaints
| Rating: | ![]() |
| This jacket is the nicest Gore-Tex I've ever owned. I originally bought the Beta SL because I wanted something as light as possible, but I ended up exchanging it for this one: the AR is a better jacket, it fits better, and unlike most of the SL line, it is still made in Vancouver, Canada (my hometown -- check out Arc'teryx's factory store in North Van if you are in the area, although to be honest it is often possible to get stuff for the same price by shopping around online in the US). This jacket is somewhat tailored, but is cut fairly wide and large for layering. I am a M according to Arc'teryx's size charts, and my M allows me to wear a down vest/jacket underneath in that lovely NW Coast rainy-freezing hypothermia weather. But the jacket looks a little big without bulky underlayers, so for 3-season use, I think I could have sized down, except possibly for the length. I love the pocket placement; you can still get into them under a climbing harness. I would say this jacket is best for medium-output backcountry trips in fairly harsh weather; it's bulkier and less breathable than anything I'd want to wear running or cycling, and if you are resort-skiiing/boarding you can just wear something cheaper and heavier. I would be interested in knowing how it compares to the Alpha SV (which is supposedly more bomb-proof, but I don't have any complaints about the Beta AR). As with almost all Arc'teryx products, this jacket is so well made that it will probably make your other outdoor clothing look a bit shoddy. | |

Worth the cost | |

| My old winter coat was a Marmot, which served me very well - but I have to say that the Beta AR jacket has won me over to the Arc'Teryx brand. I've worn this in wet conditions and the pit zips are a godsend when you need to cool down a bit and vent the interior. In cold and windy conditions, I wear the Beta AR over a fleece and some good baselayers. The pockets are up high (which I prefer) so they serve more as handwarmers. The jacket is slightly fitted so you'll look good wearing it casually around town, even if you need to go a size larger to accommodate the times you'll wear a fleece or layers underneath. Plus it's pretty lightweight - easy to stuff in a pack. I was concerned that the fuschia color would be too glaringly pink, but the amount of compliments I've received in this jacket have put a rest to those fears. The cuffs feature a velcro closure, not elastic. And FYI, the hood is not removable, but it is adjustable and hangs low enough to cover your hat or helmet. Overall it's a fabulous jacket and worth the price tag. [...] | |

Best Raincoat Ever | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I love this coat because it's breathable and waterproof. I live in a rainforest; it rains an unimaginable amount here! I just got this coat but so far its holding up very well. The hood is comfortably adjustable to fit a helmet or just my head, without slipping down onto my face and obstructing my vision. Overall the jacket fits great; the gusseted underarms and articulated elbows provide a wide-range of motion without reducing rain-protection. This coat is breathable too. I ride my bike home 4 miles from school; I'm in Hawaii and I don't suffocate. I thought the fuschia might be too pink but it's really more of a deep red. I was happy about that because I don't wear pink. I got this coat on sale, so it was totally worth what I paid for it. The chest pockets instead of hip pockets are a little different but I lose less things so I like them! | |

I would buy this jacket again.
| Rating: | ![]() |
| I bought this jacket 7 years ago for a lightweight backcountry ski outer layer. I wanted a jacket that fit well with underlayers, wasn't bulky, and was waterproof and breatheable for the sometimes damp snow in our region. I also needed it to transfer well to lift service skiing. This has been the best coat I've ever owned for it's versatility, function and durability. I use this coat 50+ days a season strictly for skiing and it has performed perfectly. It fits well in my ski pack for non snowy days. The hood has great adjustability for stormy days or cold chair lift rides. Good pockets, zippers and venting. It also looks great on. In 7 years of heavy use I've only had to replace the velcro at the wrist, and still get complements on the great style of this jacket. | |

Excellent Jacket | |

So far, I have used my jacket twice, while hiking in the Pacific NOrthWest. Both times, the jacket protected me from hail and drizzles. I'm don't usually follow the beaten path and like to climb up and down rocks, and so far the jacket hasn't torn or shown signs of wear. I tend to beat my gears up. So far so good. Cheers!

Best rain jacket so far!
| Rating: | ![]() |
Strictly as a rain jacket, this one has been the best for me. I work for the Park Service and wore this doing field work in the torrential rain. I was the only one that was bone dry at the end of the day. I got it in this very light blue color, which tends to get dirty real easily, but that's negligible. The only tiny detail that was a con for me, personally, was that the jacket wasn't as long as I would ideally like, the pockets are kind of small, and since its pro-shell gore-tex the jacket can be a little loud (I was told to take the jacket off during my road test because it was distracting!) Other than that it does its job, I would especially hope so for its price!

"serious performance jacket, but not for helmets?"
| Rating: | ![]() |
| this is a great jacket ... tough decision between big ups and love it, honestly killer construction and overall fit, serious nasa quality fabrics, gorgeous colors ... no kidding, i'd climb a mountain or go out in a torrential storm in this oh yeah, i did, didn't i?! ... talk about keeping me dry, light, and wind protected ... it fits close enough to stay out of the way but enough room for me to get bendy and such while doing the things that make me bendy it's the perfect jacket for those who are much more serious about their outdoor activities than suburbanites but not necessarily those who wear climbing helmets minor cons - 1 gotta make the hood bigger for helmets hey, you thou | |

A definite keeper! | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
| This jacket falls under the "you get what you pay for" adage. I felt incredibly guilty initially after buying it - I've never spent so much on a jacket - but had no regrets after trying it on and hiking in it on one of our frequent cold, wet days. It fits very well, especially the hood, which is the reason I replaced my old Gore-Tex jacket (whose hood never kept the rain out of my face). A fleece fits very nicely underneath for cold days. I've gone through 3 other rain coats in the past several years, so I figure this one will end up paying for itself since it is definitely a keeper! | |

Why Buy Any Other Jacket?

This jacket seriously is the only shell you will ever need. I would know living in the rainy rainy Pac NW. It stops wind in its tracks and can take buckets and buckets of water all day while you stay perfectly dry inside. It is also pretty breathable for a shell--it does not have the inner condensation problems of gore-tex paclite for instance. To top off the amazing technical performance, the jacket looks like a million bucks and the fit is spot on. Couldn't ask for more. Sizing wise, I have the medium and am 5'10" 145lbs with room for layers underneath.

Rockin Beta! | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
Primary use: Motorcycle ride to work in rain/sleet. Secondary use: snowboarding. Strengths: Articulated elbows offer great fit in any position. Water-sealed seams are legitimate even in a total down pour you will remain dry as a bone. Materials look and feel quality and reinforcements are positioned appropriately. Colors are vibrant! Weaknesses: Fit could be slimmer, but once you've got some warm layers under this shell you almost need the room. Helmet compatible hood is bulky and only useful on rare occasions. Overall: The right choice if you need absolute dryness and quality fabrics/zippers that will last.

Not the one for me | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
I hoped I'd found a replacement for my 11 year old North Face (men's xs) but alas, no. The hand pockets are way too small even for my tiny hands and I sometimes need to stash gloves in them. Useless. Also the inside pocket is too small for anything essential. The main zipper is not two way, a major deal breaker for me and is awkward to work since it starts at the bottom edge of the jacket. The girlish styling on all these womens' jackets I find annoying. I want to stay dry and layer for cold and rainy weather, not show off my girlish figure. The waist hits me at the hips so is snug when it shouldn't be and yet is not as long as I'd like to block wind and rain.I love the way the hood works and the colour and the lack of velcro but those features are not enough for me to want to keep it. Maybe I could alter it to make the pockets bigger but I shouldn't have to.

Some limitations | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
Overall its a great jacket light weight, water proof goretex pro shell that taskes very little pack space. However it was not suffiecient for my multiday skimountaineering demands. The material is a little to thin and not as durable as some other shells I own like the Patagonia Powderbowl or AK 3L given those are heavier. Also its not as wind proof as my other shells and the hood does not fit my helmet well So I ended up sending it back. I generally think Arcteryx products are great I own a pair of theta AR and beta AR pants which I love but were made in canada. I have a feeling since Arcteryx was baught by Amer sports and is producing in china the quality is not holding up to previous standards.

Too short | |

I'm going to Bhutan next year and wanted a technical shell that could do it all. It had to be light weight, sturdy enough to handle a backpack, waterpoof enough to keep me dry standing in a full on shower, and roomy enough to wear multiple layers without feeling restricted. The AR almost fit the bill, but unfortunately wasn't long enough for my liking. I ended up returning it and going for the Theta AR which was a better choice for me because it's longer in back and will keep my butt dry!

this jacket is SUPER thin....just a shell basically. but a great shell! its very very waterproof and has a nice small fit. i just don't warm up in it right away, which can be tough. i love the big hood, and don't love the lack of pockets. good for skiing hard, bad for leisure walks with the dog.
