Excellent but buyers need to know this..
I am on my 2nd pair in three years. I typically don't write reviews but I noticed comments in other reviews which maybe a little misleading.
PROs First, I have found these boots to be excellent heavy load hiking boot. Top of the line traction through water and on rocks. The toe area does take a beating; they have worn look as compared to a boot with a tougher guard in the front. They are leather and very water proof. Great fit for my narrow feet. Excellent ankle support and protection, not the bulky ankle padding you find in other boots. I use superfeet green inserts to add to the support. I typically do 3-4 day tracks with 55lbs+ pack 10-15 miles a day without any problems. The boot has a heel ready for my Hybrid crampon...this was the final selling point on my first pair.
Now, here is where I differ with other reviews. They get warm because they are water proof--it's a trade off. They are complete leather. if you are doing a light day hike of 10+miles with little or no river/snow encounters this boot maybe over kill.
CON: I love the traction and thought put into "defatigue-reducing technology" but I wish they could have shaved 5 oz off the weight. I believe they top the scale in weight for the type/class of boot they were design for. I don't have a love fest going with the black color--'dark graphite' but i can live with it because these boots fit and function perfectly.
Asolo Matic 200 is a very well made boot worth the price tag.
I don't usually write reviews, but wow, these are great boots! Their first use was on a hardcore backpacking trip through the tundra in inland Alaska this summer. We walked through tons of wet terrain and I even slipped into some creeks and my feet stayed dry!
Although the price was higher than what I wanted, they were so comfortable and met my need to keep my feet dry and warm, so I bought them. I also have hard to fit narrow feet. So glad I did. The pulley system for the laces work great to keep them comfortable throughout my hikes.
The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is that I got a nasty blister on one foot. I expected it though, because I didn't have time to break them in. On the other foot I wore a bandaid for a preexisting cut, and didn't get a blister there, so I would suggest wearing heel bandaids to break in.
The classic look even got some compliments.
great backpacking boot
I had to try a few methods since my very first experience I got out of these boots ended up in blisters. It helped tremendously to use a liner sock with a lightweight hiking sock. And knowing where my hotspot was, I just put a blister bandage over it (for extra precaution). I also put conditioner/lotion on it to 'soften' and clean the leather. There are also some boot tying methods you can learn to secure your ankle in place. For me (and maybe for others) one foots is SLIGHTLY larger than the other hence all the preventative methods.
The boot worked well carrying 30+ pounds on my back through dusty, rocky terrain. It did get completely soaked (crossing a river), we just removed the insoles and let it dry for about 30 minutes and it was good to go for the rest of our short trek.
Recommend these boots as a nice investment for your long treks.
First off, I'd like to say that while I didn't keep these boots I felt compelled to write a quick review on them. I needed a replacement for a pair of Vasques that I had for over 10 years and that I used to death, and decided to go with these after reading high reviews. Right out of the box I loved them. Great look and high quality feel. The lacing system is pulleys, which ensure a nice snug fit evenly distributed across your foot. The boot is stiff, seemed really durable, and propels you ask you walk. Perfect for hiking and jagged bouldering. They would have been great but the arch just didn't fit my foot right, a little high on the outer edges...enough that a new sole wouldn't have helped. Sad that they didn't fit me, but I think most would be really happy with this boot.
Comfortable, hardworking boots!
I do a lot of high Sierra backpacking, including tricky class 3 and 4 scrambles, and these boots have kept me from twisting an ankle at least twice! Great traction, great with a heavy pack, and I had no leakage when hiking in thick mud and snow. I was amazed when I tried them on and they fit so comfortably--in my book, there's no such thing as "breaking in" a boot; it should fit well from day one. Regarding their weight, they always feel heavy when I pick them up to put them on, but they've never felt heavy on my feet. They also have a really great lace locking system for perfect lacing. I even got them on and off fast at the airport!
I love these boots. I have a low profile foot, so, with a super feet insert, these boots fit me great! I wore them straight out of the box on a 20 mile through-hike in the Enchantments. No blisters. I have since taken them up the Muir snowfield and through streams. They stay dry and warm.
My only issue is that the exterior toe portion of this boot wears easy. It only took a mile on the trail to make my boots look like they had seen plenty of trail time.
Great boot for serious hikes
These boots fit like a glove. My husband has the same style and he bought two pairs. We both have hard to fit feet. They will require a little breaking in of course, but for the heavy duty support, these are so easy compared to other boots I've worn. Since there are no seams, nothing binds on the inside. My husband wears his every day and his podiatrist said they were the best shoe he could possibly wear for support and overall good foot health.
Incredible boots! I have owned many, many hiking boots while guiding up in Canada. I wish that these boots would have been available then. These are absolutely the most comfortable "backpacking" boots I have ever owned. They are perfect for any kind of hiking you do. I have always purchased boots (for the last 30 years!) with Vibram soles as well...the best. I highly recommend this boot for all of your hiking, day or backpacking.
These are awesome boots. I am buying my second pair. My last pair has just started wearing down tread. I wear them 365 days a year. They are extremely comfortable providing a lot of support for my weak ankles. I would recommend these boots to anyone who is into quality shoes. They are definitely worth the price! As far as arch support, I cannot really say. I wear orthodics so I have no problem.
Awsome Power Matic 200
hike & sno shoe mountain terrain live in NH where there are many mountains rivers & lakes, so putting those all on the list, makes for a great pair of hiking boots, I have to say a bit hard to drive a standard just switch shoes for that app. Also purchased these because of the great reviews, and the sizing in which the customer service person helped with def. true to size.
