Best boots I have ever had!

I am an avid hiker who fell on Mt Washington 5 years ago while wearing another boot. I asked a female who works on the summit and does rescue work about her boots and she raved about this product. It took me 10 months before I could walk normally and resume hiking ( Mountain climbing ) and I could not believe how wonderful this boot is. No break in period at all. I've never had a blister, toes stay in place and they are comfortable. It took a while for me to "believe and trust" the boot as far as grip. Recently while going through high water I discovered they are waterproof.....I didn't realize and was thrilled as it was a 10 mile 4700' hike. I do notice after 5 years and many many miles that the bottoms are beginning to slip on smooth rock. I guess 5 years is a long time for a boot so I am going to buy another pair!

Love this Boot!

I have worn these boots for 2+ years now. They have taken me from weekly local hikes to multi-day backpacking trips through the White mtns and over Katahdin. Still going strong. Never had a problem with blisters - just wear a quality liner sock, I've never had blisters with any boot doing this. Hiked across the pemigewasset wilderness in 3 days of rain, feet stayed dry. Traction, when wet, is not as good as my winter boot, but it's not terrible either. These are not a true winter boot - they lack insulation. However, I can wear them from March to November; I only need to switch to my winter hiking boots when the temps drop below 20 degrees. The bottoms are starting to show some wear, but I've easily put a few hundred miles on them. I will definitely purchase these again when my current pair gives out.

THE BEST HIKING BOOTS EVER!

I just came back from 14 days in Alaska. I punished these boots right out of the box and put 100+ hiking miles on them on some seriously strenuous trails. Horrible trail conditions/trail building after 7" of rain...scrambling over trees, 4miles up at 1000' elev/mi, in water, over rocks...I will never buy another pair of hikers, ever. I slipped occasionally on some wet, mossy rocks and wet, mossy fallen trees, but I haven't found anything out there that won't slip on wet moss(probably why they don't recommend walking or doing anything on wet moss) and the only complaint is I started to feel their weight, but only after I finished the hikes and put tennis shoes on and could feel the difference. Grateful for the weight for the support and stability. These boots are Awesome!

Sent back

I have triangle-shaped feet, which are very hard to fit. I tried these because of the technical specs but the heel was too wide and the forefoot too narrow (it pinched my toes quite a bit). So I can't say any more about their use since I had to send them back. I just wanted to make sure others out there with similiar feet knew that these would probably fit someone with an average shaped foot best.

If you have feet like me (pinched toes, blistered heels), check out the Salewa GTX Mountain Trainer ... so far I have been quite happy.

Good Start

I bought these boots in late winter hoping they would be broken in by the hiking season came around. It took a few weeks but now they are quite comfortable. I recommend them for people as a great starter to intermediate hiking boot...unfortunately for me, knee length mud even with gaiters does not keep your feet dry and for long backpacking trips just a bit more support would have been preferable. Despite that they are great for day hikes or weekend trips with a lighter pack I still love them and wear them more often than any other show I own!

Great right out of the box!

I needed sturdy boots that had good traction, great ankle support and were waterproof, not only for hiking while carrying my weighty paragliding gear but also for landing safely. I wore them right out of the box on a flying day and experienced total comfort and support. Just 2 days ago, I hiked a steep, wet trail with loose rocks to fly high in cold temps and my feet stayed dry and toasty (sadly, my hands froze!). I am very happy with their performance AND their good looks! A pilot friend just bought the men's version based on my recommendation.

Love these boots!

I have a long, narrow foot and find it very difficult to find hiking boots that fit. I tried these after my old Vasque GTX boots wore out and so far, they are wonderful. I just got back from a trip to Acadia where I intended to "break them in," but no break in was necessary. No blisters, injured toenails, or other problems I usually experience. Some may find these boots a little rigid, but I like the support they provide for both the feet and ankles. Looking forward to taking them to Iceland and the Scottish Highlands next month!

Excellent!

I bought these over a year ago for backcountry camping and they are still going strong. I was very worried that I would have to break them in before my weeklong hike but to the contrary these are the first pair of hiking boots that did not require that painful new shoe blister period. They kept my feet nice and dry while stomping thought mud puddles and creeks in Shenandoah. They have good traction and great ankle support for climbing over rocks.

Love these boots!

Lighter in weight than the full leather version, but great for my 12 day backpacking trip in Glacier this July. The heel seemed narrower than some other brands and that helped to hold my heel in place, keeping it blister free. The toe box was roomy and my feet were happy. Break-in time was minimal--a few short hikes in the creek bed, no hills where I live. I did add some gel heel cups, but used the manufacturer's insoles.

Love at first wear!!!

I am a professional stage manager and these are my work shoes. I need shoes that are warm, waterproof, comfortable for long periods of standing/walking/heavy lifting. This is my second pair of them. First pair lasted for 5 years of almost daily use for 6 hours or more and when this pair wears out I will get another. EMS is a great place to purchase them because you can get the cute colors versus the brown pair.

Negative Reviews:

For $210, they better last longer!

Very disappointed in these boots! I expected MUCH more for Asolo. I bought these boots exactly 2 years ago. I use them regularily, but always dry them out. Several months ago, I noticed my feet seemed wet, but I tried to chalk it up to water coming from the top down (was walking through tall, wet overgrowth in a drizzle). However, over the last 2 months I can't so much as walk through mowed grass with morning dew on it without my feet becoming absolutely drenched.

I do Search & Rescue and live in upstate NY...need a product that is RELIABLE through all conditions. We're heading into fall...worrying about wet feet and cold night-time temps should be the last of my worries. There is a reason that I buy higher-end products, but in this instance I could have spent a lot less and gotten the same results, I'm afraid.

On the plus side, before the went down the tubes they were VERY waterproof and offered a lot of support. Traction was not as good as I wanted, but wasn't the aboslute worst pair of hikers I've worn.

bad boots

less than 40 miles and the toe is already starting to peal up. took just about that long to break in... and on top of that they have a horrible seam up the heal on the inside that makes break in harder. i found i require two pairs of socks to prevent blistering do to rubbing on this seam. do not buy these boots. for the price something has to be better. i'm still looking. i have not taken them on more than an 8 mile day hike. i'd be afraid of the pain i'd be in by the end of long camping trek.

two good things and what sold me on them in the first place, comfortable on the soul and arch of the foot, durable feeling or so i thought.

WAS a great 5 star boot

I bought these boots in July to go backpacking in Indonesia. For the month I was there, they were the perfect boot, being waterproof, warm, and comfortable. I used them for exactly a month and then put them away until Dec when it started to snow badly. I barely wore them for two weeks when the front of the boot began to pull away from the sole, letting in water, making my water proof boots non-water proof. When I first got these boots I recommended them to everyone because they were so handy and comfortable, now I warn all my friends against buying these boots because I literally wore them for only two months in a 5-6 month period, and they're already falling apart.

I am not loving these boots

I bought these boots because I hike and backpack a lot. I had a pair of Merrill's which were great but they quickly fell apart with all the hiking in NE terrain. I wanted a pair of durable, comfortable, and waterproof boots. The problem with these boots are the ball of my feet would ache after long hikes. It was is so painful I couldn't wait to take them off after a long trip, I didn't even take my pack off first. I bought the happy feet and they did not make a difference at all. I am wearing a Montrail boot that is much more comfortable and a lot cheaper.

Not good for a narrow foot

I've heard great things about these boots, and I suspect these are a great boot for the right foot-type. My foot is just not that type -- it's narrow, low arch, and low volume -- and these are not the right boot for that. They gave me LOTS of blisters -- I even tried wearing several pairs of socks, taped up my heels, etc. At first I assumed they just needed to break in, but I wore them far, far beyond the break-in period, and the situation never improved. I ended up buying a pair of Kayland Zephyrs and LOVE them -- great for a narrow foot.

Lots of Problems

I bought these boots in June of 2007 and have done my best to get used to them. They were properly sized at EMS. In fact, I bought three different sizes and wore them all before settling on the boot I thought fit best. The traction on wet rock is so bad that I have fallen twice. The balls of my feet hurt within a few miles. Superfeet have helped some. I get blisters on my heels despite no apparent friction. I am looking to buy a new pair of boots.

it got totall wet in snow

I bought it in November this year and I go hiking with twice pre month. It is comfortable to wear and protect my feet during six or seven hours hiking. However, it was terrible experience that I have ever had on last Saturday 1/1/2011. At the beginning, it worked well with gaiter, but after two hours stepping in snow, even it is GTX, it got wet totally from outside to the inside socks. My other teammates didn't have that same problem as mine. I am really disappointed with it.

boot design changed

The fit is not the same as previous years. I have been wearing the Styngers for 4 years. Bought a new pair last year the waterproofing didn't work at all. Returned them and the new pair were are not waterproof and the foot bed is different.

Not Waterproof for Long

I've hiked several hundred miles in these boots and cared for them well, but they started to ship water in snowy or wet terrain after only two years. I was hoping for more from a [$] boot with good reviews.
