Best of 3 recent Backpack Meals

Many folks commented on the CRUNCHY UNDERCOOKED rice. Note that, as with most directions, it says to DOUBLE the wait time for every 5,000 feet of elevation. So if it says 13 minutes or so (and we were at about 7,000 feet), that means more than double, or about 30 MINUTES of wait time before ready. If you can wait that long, the rice is ready to eat.

That being said, I found the meal spicy and delicious, though I could not finish it at dinner. I actually saved it and had it COLD for breakfast, it was that good. Not just cold, but pretty much FREEZING and it still tasted good for breakfast.

I sweat alot when backpacking, so bring on the sodium for me!

Only reason its not a 5 is because the guidelines say that 5* is PERFECT, and that's probably NEVER gonna happen in a freeze-dried meal, IMO.

Really Good!

Tried this for the first time yesterday, loved it.
However I made the mistake of trying to eat the whole package, lol. It is enough for 2 people, It says 2 servings, when I hear "servings" I think of a really small portion that never seems to be enough. This is not the case, there is a lot of food in there.

I barely ate half, so yeah, feeds 2 people!

Only thing I would say is make sure you wait the full 13 minutes otherwise the some of the rice could be firm still, maybe even 14 minutes.

Very flavor filled and a nice dinner.

Tasty, easy to prep - worth the wait!

While my wife was not all that impressed with the Jamaican BBQ Chicken, I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. It is full of flavor, the chicken tasted good, and the overall experience was worth repeating. I found myself digging in the bag for every last morsel! The one issue we encountered was that it requires a little more cook time than listed (2 - 3 minutes) or the rice ends up crunchy. I'll be buying more of this one!

Super Tasty! and I'm a good cook!

One of my favorite. This has a lot of flavor and we fought over the last amount. We splurge on packing in red wine which pairs nicely with this meal. Sure it may have higher sodium but it's not like I'm going to eat this daily. I chose it for the lower fat content.

Great in the wild

This was an amazing treat while we were backpacking in the Grand Canyon. It was super tasty and really hit the spot after some grueling hiking. I could eat this all week long and wouldn't mind. One of BP's best meals.

Best ever

I've eaten thousands of dehydrated foods from French made to American made. This is one that was good! If you put it on a plate and don't let the others see you making it, the wouldn't know it was dehydrated.

good one

I got this flavor and the fettucini alfredo with chicken for a backpacking trip. This one was much better. I like the brand's clear package bottom, and unlike the fettucini, this flavor cooked evenly and had more flavor.

Great taste, easy to make

Great taste, good spicy kick to it. I would recommend. We cooked this while in Havasupai and it hit the spot. Not a ton of food if you share it.

Negative Reviews:

Definitely better options out there...

I purchased this on whim without checking any reviews first, having been pretty happy with previous "Backpacker's Pantry" items. It was easy to prepare but it does need longer time to rehydrate than what the directions suggest. The chicken pieces were flavorful, but there was very little meat in it. I won't say it tasted bad, but as others have commented it was mostly just pepper flavor. I did not notice a particularly salty taste, but a check of the nutritional content did reveal an extremely high sodium level. Overall I was not upset with having purchased this, but I will not be buying it again. Too much sodium, not a great flavor, and there are much better tasting and healthy meals available.

Too Salty, Stay Away From Rice Dishes

Took this with me to Mt. Whitney in August. I didn't pay attention to the sodium in the store, I was mainly concerned with getting enough calories for the meal, but when I got home I realized it had 120% of your sodium for the day. I took it anyway, and it was not a very pleasant meal. The taste was way too salty, and the black pepper provided a burn without any real flavor. Also, as most of these, the rice never really got soft, even after I left it for a few extra minutes to steep. I would recommend you stick with the pasta dishes, and pay attention to the sodium content when you're shopping.

Do not buy

I took a bunch of backpacker's pantry meals on a week long trip in Alaska. My friends brought Mountain High and Mountain House meals and I tasted most of their meals. BP is barely edible - this specific meal tastes the exact same and the red beans and rice but with bland tiny bits of chicken and almost no spices. If you have to take this on a trip make sure to bring garlic, salt, or something to add to it. I found a can of spam in a cabin and risked eating it not knowing how old it was instead of eating this junk.

Too much black pepper

I bought this to sample before going off on an extended canoe trip. I did not take it along. The flavour is unbalanced; it is mostly black pepper. There are not enough chicken pieces. There is way, way too much sodium.

Chewy yet blah

I have attempted to think of something to add to help. Nothing yet.

Neutral Reviews:

Salty and lacking. Needs a lot of work.

1400 mg sodium per serving! This thing was practically nothing but salt; but otherwise rehydrated very nicely. 1.7 cups of boiling water was enough. The instructions of 2 cups would have turned it to soup. I managed to repair the meal by adding 1.5 cups of diced fresh celery and 1.5 cups of reheated ready cooked rice. An addition of some more cooked chicken, from a bag, maybe 0.5 cups would have worked wonders too. By then, the quantity of food is enormous, enough for two very hungry backpackers except there's not many calories (about 300 per serving--just a little bit more than a Snickers bar). A good wine to wash it down helps too. Shelf life doesn't seem as long as Mountain House products; but then there's no dessicants or other packs of things to pull out of the bag prior to putting in boiling water. Bring something long to stir (eg chopsticks) and scoop (long spoon) the stuff out of the bag.

Tasty, but salty

The chicken was quite tasty, but overall dish was a little too salty. Some of the rice did not cook all the way as well. Overall it was quite good and I would take it again.
