Bell Volt Helmet -

The promise of any great helmet is that you'll forget you have it on. Bell engineers undertook that task by keeping the Volt helmet light and making sure it was ventilated. At 320g, it's one of the lightest out there. The Volt's 22 vents direct air into the helmet, over the head and out the back to keep airflow constant, just like riding sans bucket. The carbon fiber Fusion In-Mold Microshell adds carbon fiber strength to the internally reinforced EPS foam for greater durability. Cam-lock Levers make for quick strap adjustment.

None of this matters if the helmet doesn't fit. Those who have a round head shape have always fared well with Bell helmets, as opposed to the more oval-fitting Giros. The addition of the TAG Fit System means riders can adjust the helmets fit around the Occipital Lobe (that bump at the back of your head) both in width and height for a more conforming fit. And if you've ever picked up your helmet and thought, "What's that smell?" you'll appreciate the X-Static Padding which combines a quick-dry material with an anti-microbial coating. Bell's most impressive achievement may be the always-right graphics package.

The Bell Volt is available in 3 sizes, includes the adjustable and removable VPV Visor (and plugs, should you choose to ride without) and comes in a number of stunning finishes. Choose from Black/Carbon, Blue/White, Matte Blue/Black, Red/White, or Silver/White.

Fit:

  • Twin Axis Gear fit system adjusts to the head circumferentially and horizontally to better accommodate varied head shapes
  • Twin Axis Gear fit system dials in exact fit, as well as the mechanism's horizontal position on the back of the head

Lining and Layers:

  • Fusion In-mold technology bonds both the top microshell and bottom wrap to an expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam layer to make a sturdy, solid and protective helmet

Fabric:

  • Fusion In-Mold microshell with Composite Fiber Intake construction
  • Composite Fiber Intake (CFI) Composite Construction alows engineers to offer great protection, but keeping it light.
  • X-Static padding is woven with silver fibers to inhibit growth of odor-causing bacteria while keeping you cooler than standard pads

Padding:

  • Rearward exhaust ports and moisture-wicking X-Static padding work in tandem to help keep the rider cool and dry
  • Thermodynamic X-Static™ padding is quick drying and antimicrobial

Ventilation:

  • 11 frontal vents corral massive amounts of air
  • Streamjet ventilation mixes channeled ventilation ducts with specially designed constriction channels for increased airflow
  • Composite Fiber Intakes direct flow to the helmet's internal StreamJet Ventilation channels
  • Internal composite skeleton provides the strength required for advanced styling, light weight and large vents
  • 22 deeply sculpted ventilation channels bring cool air in through the front and flush warm air out the back

Manufactured:

  • Made in China

Features:

  • Internal Reinforcement keeps your helmet in one piece on your head if in an accident
  • Cam-lock Levers makes it easy to adjust on the fly

Excellent Product!

Before this helmet I had the Giro Atmos which was decent. But then the Atmost developed a crack right down the center, starting at the forhead and going back. I picked this helmet up in person because I purchased a Lazer through a catalog and it turned out crummy. Fit, everything. Absolute junk, don't go Lazer. Normally I have a large for helmet size but the medium fit me perfect. I will add though that wearing a thin cycling hat can make the fit a bit tight, but loosening the straps helps with that. The helmet is light, ventilates well, actually hugs the head, and is secure. That's one problem I felt some helmets have: they seem to "sit" on the head instead of "sit and hug". For example, the Specialized Prevail, awesome helmet, but I put it on and, even when tightened, could push it back. In the event of a crash, the helmet would slide aside and have my head take the impact. The Volt stays in place and shields all around, it's a perfect lid. I feel more confident now if I go down (involuntarily of course.) I've never bought a Bell product before and am very glad I did. Initially, I was going to get the Sweep R, but if you can, do what I did and try out the Volt. It's worth the extra price and fits even better.

The Volt is as good as it gets! Light weight - wear it and forget it. Superb ventilation - I've had cheaper Bell Helmets and had issues with sweat dripping down my forehead and all over my glasses - not so with the Volt. Fit is stupid-money. Got a funny shaped head and Giro's always fit like crap - Bells are spot on for me. Retention system on this is easily adjustable and holds the lid to your head without any uncomfortable pressure points. Really dig the removable visor as this helmet does road and MTB duty - looks sweet both ways. Great colors too - I've got the Saxo replica and it's sweet having a helmet that all the other Fred's don't have. The silver Carbon fiber trim is silly, but looks cool. Great helmet all around.

I have been riding Bell helmets for years. This helmet replaced a sweep that I broke in a crash (my head is still intact) and the fit is very similar. The new pads are a nice improvement and seem to absorb sweat better than the ones in my Sweep. Every Bell I have ever had has been cool and light, the Volt continues that tradition, it is very cool in the heat. I love the dial ratchet, it lets me quickly adjust the size mid ride if I take my wool hat off when it warms up.

I shopped around quite a bit before selecting this helmet. This one seemed to fit my mellon the best and was lite and confortable. The helmet keeps your head cool on hot days and has good air flow. Some of the veins are reenforced with carbon, which adds strength and looks sharp. Great value for the money compared to other high end offerings. I have a medium, which weighs 310g dispite the Bell site claims of 280g.

Great lightweight helmet

I bought this helmet to replace my Bell Furio after it saved my life. I love this helmet because it has the adjustment wheel in the rear (which I find easier to use than the squeeze adjustment). It also is super light (35 grams less than the Furio) and isn't as wide as the Furio, which I always thought made my head look big.

I got this helmet for my birthday this year; not only was it the best birthday gift I couldn't believe I had been riding w/o it.
The previous revue is spot on; this Helmet is light, breathes great, adjusts and fits well. Though, I didn't pay for my helmet I would have considered this a deal.

Clint Gordon-Carroll at Backcountry.com on 05/29/2009

Fits just like the Bell Sweep. The straps are a little finicky to get totally flat. After a few minutes of mild frustration you can get them flat against the contours of your head. Bell tends to fit heads with a round profile. Comfortable and plenty of vents that you can stick your glasses in.

Stephen Tam at Backcountry.com on 03/18/2009

Sweet lid. It's super light and fits far better than my old Flux. The adjuster wheel works well, the removable visor feels solid and can be adjusted up or down when in use. Nice to be able to use this on pavement as well... now if I only had a road bike.

Great Helmet!

The Volt is basically an improvement on my 6 yr old Delirium, which sadly and recently gave its life to save mine. I loved the Delirium, I expect the Volt to be the same or better. It fits like a glove and is hardly noticeable in use.

I had a big crash wearing this helmet, I (and the helmet) got pretty banged up in the accident.....however, my brain is intact and I am shopping for the same helmet again because it has proven itself above and beyond just looking good and being comfortable.

Neutral Reviews:

I bought size Large and it weighs 342g which surprised me. I have a Bell Furio which is a low end helmet that ways 322g. I was hoping the Volt would be around 280 (as advertised), noticeably lighter than the Furio on a long ride. Still, everything else about the helmet feels very comfortable and it's about the same weight as the Giro Saros helmet (330g) that I returned (looks huge, and the adjustment mechanism is not as easy as the Volt's wheel).
I really feel the super premium price point of the helmet should be on the light side of the spectrum, hence the three stars.
RealCyclist is awesome in their customer service, excellent return process and cheap return shipping makes ordering risk free.
