Big Agnes Slater UL1+ Tent -

The Big Agnes Slater UL1+ tent gets its inspiration from the Fly Creek UL series tents. The Slater is light and fast like the Fly Creek, but comes with extra floor space and the absence of mesh.

  • Fly and door made of silicone treated nylon rip-stop
  • 2 Door closing options - mesh and full polyester layer
  • Tent body is nylon rip-stop and polyester mesh vent
  • Woven nylon mesh tent door helps ventilate tent; ripstop nylon walls are especially effective at keeping the sand and wind out of the tent when you head to the desert
  • Extra space comes at little cost in terms of weight, and the lightweight, breathable ripstop nylon walls offer an extra bit of warmth, privacy and protection

  • Lightweight and strong DAC Featherlite® NSL poles with press-fit connectors and a lightweight hub use an anodization process with fewer chemicals than other processes

  • DAC Twist clips attach tent body to the pole frame for quick and easy set up

  • Fly vent improves ventilation to reduce condensation; reflective guyout and reflective webbing on tent corners increase visibility at night

Weather and Wind:

  • Rainfly and seamless floor are made of polyurethane- and silicone-coated high-tenacity ripstop nylon; seams are taped with waterproof, solvent-free polyurethane tape

  • Stormflap over vestibule zipper prevents water drips
  • Storm flaps on vestibule zipper

  • Color-coded pole ends, webbing and buckles make setting up the Big Agnes Slater UL1+ tent effortless

  • Includes interior mesh pockets and gear loft loops for storage; 11 superlight aluminum stakes and stuff sacks also included

  • For a lightweight setup during nice weather leave tent body behind; use the rainfly and footprint (sold separately) with the poles and stakes
  • Single door and vestiblue

This new Ultra Light tent from Big Agnes gives you the freedom to move around easily in the back country. The Slater UL packs easily and the included vestibule provides shelter space for your gear.

Big Agnes Slater UL1+ Tent Reviews:

Perfect for the TALL solo backpacker.

I just completed my first trip with this tent: a two night backpacking trip in the Petrified Forest National Park. The tent was awesome! At 6'4", I had tried a number of other (and even purchased the Copper Spur UL1) before discovering that NONE of them were big enough for a comfortable fit - and certainly not with any additional gear stored in the tent overnight. The Slater's legroom was perfect, and there was even a little extra room for a few small gear items. And, despite the extra space, the Slater checked in at a lower weight than the Copper Spur that it replaced.

The construction is solid, and the materials all appeared to be pretty durable. Time will tell.

The tent held up great in high winds. At one point, when I was setting up, the winds were so strong that the tent was pushed nearly to its side on the ground (a product of the 3 points of pole contact instead of 4), but all of that was resolved when I guyed it out, and I didn't have a lick of trouble after that.

The wall materials are nearly all solid (i.e., little mesh), which is good for a trip like mine, where the temps got down into the 30s at night. However, I could see it getting a little stuffy in warmer weather. Although, some of the professional reviews I've read of this tent suggest the little bit of mesh is sufficient to keep that from happening.

My one complaint is minor. The ties for the door toggles were so tight that, after tying back the door my first night, I had to cut the ties to undo them! That was a bummer, but otherwise, I had not one complaint about the Slater.

"Extra space made the difference"

I shopped around for a small, light single backpacking tent, and this new Agnes caught my eye. The 'extra space' feature particularly interested me, as most single backpacking tents are great on weight but tough on actual room.

I took this tent to the Tennessee mountains recently for a week of camping. It's very lightweight, and easy to pack. It's a breeze to setup, and I also purchased the Footprint. The construction is solid, with a no-mesh feature. There are no actual side windows, just a small overhead and at the entry door.. That took some getting used to, but was just fine. Rain was not a problem at all, the Fly was helpful. No real condensation problems, the tent dried quick as soon as the sun appeared.

I loved the extra room, made it easy to store my gear either at one end while I slept, or placed along the side walls of the tent. It's definitely worth the extra space feature. This tent is primarily for sleeping and storing your gear, it's small but perfect for those trips where you want extra floor space in a small light single tent. My long floor mattress was not a problem at all.

The only issue I had was with the Fly. It seemed to always catch in the zipper whenever I entered the tent. It slowed down my entry when it was raining. Not a big issue, but troublesome. All in all, this was a great purchase, I would use my bigger tents if I intended to spend more time in the actual tent. Big Agnes used care in designing this tent, and it will be my backpacking tent for now.

fine tent

I've only used the tent once, and the weather was fine so I don't know about the fly or waterproofing. The tent is big (for a one person tent) - almost as big on the inside as my Sierra Designs 2 person tent, and 2.5 lbs lighter. To set up one really needs to stake it down first if there is any breeze, but given that it is quite easy to set up.
