The lightweight Big Agnes Emerald Mountain SL2 Tent features mesh sides to let in cool mountain breezes and a rugged rain fly for stormy weather.Outside Magazine loved this tent's functional design so much, they gave it their Gear of the Year award. Eco-friendly tent poles hold up the two-person Emerald Mountain SL tent. In order to reduce air and water pollution, tent-pole-making company DAC created a method that requires significantly less of the two toxic chemicals necessary to making tent poles. The result is super-lightweight poles you can feel good about pitching your Big Agnes tent with. Enjoy gobs of fresh air when you pitch this tent without the fly. If a storm rolls in, the waterproof fly and tent floor will keep you dry. Two vestibules—one by each door—gives you plenty of room for backpacks, muddy boots, and rain gear.

Portable circus tent (with additional vestibule)

Rating:*****

It's pretty pricey, but if you buy the extra vestibule you'll have enough storage for all your gear and that of your idiot friend who thought it'd be hard core to not bring his rain fly in the Cascades in June. And with more than 36 sq ft of total vestibule space, there is still be enough room for your idiot friend to hunker down also. The tent itself is pretty accommodating, with a 42 inch ceiling (just enough to awkwardly bend over and change clothes). There are two storage pockets inside the tent for contact solution or glasses or a deck of cards. The pole setup takes a couple attempts to get down but is easy after that. The clip design helps keep the tent well ventilated by holding the fly apart from the tent body. I had no problems adapting the tent to small camping sites. My only concerns are that the tent mesh seems too thin to last. Also, the design seems to not do well with high winds. So far though it has been outstanding, taking buckets of rain and hail in the Sawtooths (and numerous trips elswhere) with no leaking whatsoever. And at just over 5 lbs (with the additional vestibule), it is a breeze to pack around anywhere. I suggest leaving the idiot at home regardless.

Fragile in the backcountry

Rating:****
have had this tent for a\b a year. the driving reasons that a bought it were the unobtrusive color. so many companies are making bright flashy colored tents it is nice to be able to blend in.the all mesh structure is fabulous on those clear but buggy nights. it is light and comfortable for two, with two decent vestibules able to keep all the gear dry. but about that mesh it runs from seemingly mysterious happenings it (the mesh) is decieving it looks that bugs could enter through some of the runs and it just seems that for the money it should not be looking like an old pair of panty hose within a year. love the tent in so many ways but how long will it last me?

hmm

Rating:****

before this tent i tried out the seedhouse (not SL), which i bought cheap off SandC. i loved it; well made, just big enough length-wise, and super simple to put up. but it just didn't have enough vestibule room for two people's packs, so i returned it and bought this instead. it's the same quality, the weight is nice and the fit is good, but because of the cross over pole design it has an annoyingly large footprint. i took it backpacking in the Wa.'s north cascades and it was hard to squeeze it in to the locations we were camping at. i'll be holding onto it, cause it is a perfect car camping tent, but for backpacking, i'm looking for something else.

Big Agnes Emerald Mountain SL2 Super Light Tent

Rating:*****

Agnes what can I say about her, she's BIG. Who wants a little petite thing, I like em BIG. I think the Big Agnes Emerald Mountain SL2 Super Light Tent is pretty bad a**. Even when compared to the SL3 model (3-person version) the tent is still very spacious, plus it's even lighter. It's very well ventilated. I love its mesh top, leave the fly off and keep those bugs out while enjoying the night sky above. I'm new to Big Agnes gear but I see these guys competing more and more with the "Big wigs" like The North Face, Sierra Designs and Mountain Hardwear.

samfu at Backcountry.com on 08/28/2008

Would definately buy again.

Rating:*****
My wife and I purchased this tent a few months ago for backpacking. It's spacious enough for 2 to sleep comfortably and is really breathable (even with the fly on). The only downside is that the zippers are a little hard to zip and I recommend using 2 hands to prevent excess pull on the mesh/doors when zipping. The pole system is very easy to setup, and the corners of the ground cloth and tent are color coordinated. We are very pleased!

Great summer tent

Rating:****
I've taken this tent out once and have loved it so far. Very easy set up and the all mesh makes it feel like you are sleeping under the stars. I do worry about the durability of the fabric, which looks like it was already starting to run. On the whole though, I love the design and the weight (4lbs!).

Fear the Condo

Rating:*****
Carried the SL2 on an 800 mile section hike of the AT. Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont had the wettest July and August on record. This tent kept me dry and comfortable through 24 days of straight rain. Setup is simple. Outstanding weight to space ratio. Other hikers called it the condo... it lived up to the nickname.

Light and Easy

Rating:*****

Recently used this tent for the first time in souther UT. Not only was it easily assembled at night, it withheld on again off again rain storms that blew in every direction all weekend long. The tent has small storage pockets and ample amounts of room. The extra vestibule is awesome as well. Highly recommend this tent!

"Awesome tent....awesome!"

Rating:*****
I've had many different tents over the years but this one is by far the best out of them all. It's light, very compact and easy to assemble and disassemble. I love the open top to the sky but the free footprint is a must rain reasons.

Dissapointed

Rating:**
I bought this tent in 2007 and was very excited about using it. It was going to be a lightweight replacement to a Marmot tent from 2000. I used it about a dozen times and recently returned it because it was too flimsy, and cramped. It's fine for one person -- but when you have two people of average height (5'8") and a 45 pound dog, it is just not roomy enough. I typically used it for 2-3 night trips in the pacific northwest during the summer. In winter and for wetter weather I used my old reliable Marmot tent. The Big Agnes was also awful when the wind blew. The snapping and flapping of the material keeps you up at night. i hope they improve the product, and maybe the Emerald 3 is better; but I am switching to a different brand. Other comments about the zipper, the doors and rainfly were also things i experienced.

Keep looking

Rating:**
We exclusively use this tent for backpacking and decided to return it after our first trip out. It is cramped for two people, wish they would quit making us buy 3-person tents for two people trips. But what I really got sick of was having to use two hands every time I wanted to unzip the dang doors. The zippers got stuck at both of the two major curves in the door. Then there is the problem of the door panels hanging down into the mud if you let them fall outside the tent when you are trying to get out. The velcro on the fly zip doors drove us nuts too, a zipper is plenty good if it works, who wants to hassle with velcro in the middle of the night when you've got to pee?

"Cool people when they do respond. Love them but annoyed right now. Improve customer service!"

Rating:*
Purchased the tent and free footprint on 11/23/07 as a xmas gift and received a call a few days later that the items were back-ordered and will be shipped directly from the manufacturer. That was cool. However, the ship date kept changing and finally no one from Moosejaw responded to my inquiries. Furthermore, the order now disappears completely from my Order Status page and cannot get a hold of anyone from Moosejaw.

I give it 7 out of 10 stars.

Rating:***
I have used this tent on car and motorcycle camping trips in Glacier Park, Banff Park, British Columbia, Yukon, Alaska, Ontario, New Brunswick, Maine, PEI and Nova Scotia the past 2 years. First the good Points: lightweight, screens everywhere, roomy for my purposes, good headroom I'm 6'2", excellent ventilation, waterproof. Now the bad: somewhat flimsy construction, 2 tent loops tore from the tent after a dozen uses, the footprint loop also tore after a few uses, cannot get the fly really tight because of its design, the funky pole in the side of the tent is a pain to put up quickly(especially in the rain). Considering the high price I would not buy this tent again. I will stick to the Sierra Design tents. The SD Lightning has served me well for 18 years. I just need to update to the latest model.

Unexpectedly shoddy construction.

Growing family required major accommodation upgrade (Blue tarp taco no longer acceptable). Purchased Emerald MT SL2 tent. Design looked thought out, however after inspecting other tents it may have several borrowed concepts. Secondary rain fly zipper jams no matter how careful you are. Condensation so extensive that we have had rain inside, would vent more extensively but you can't open fly due to zipper problem. Sorry to have to return.
