Very Good 4 Season Tent

My usual solo snow camping shelter is a MLD duo mid with bivy sack. But last year I started doing base camping so I started looking for an affordable, relatively lightweight 4 season tent. After examining Black Diamond single walls and various expensive Hilleberg tents, I decided to buy the String Ridge 2. Last February I camped in it for two nights at Horse Camp,Mt Shasta and one night near Brokeoff Mountain, Lassen National Park. The manufacturers' specs are: -List priceL $599 -Trail Weight 5lb -Packed Weight 5lb 11oz -Footprint Weight 8oz -Fast Fly Weight 3lb 11oz -Packed Size 8" x 20" -Floor Area 31.5sq ft -Vestibule Area 11sq ft -Head Height 42" -Foot Height 22" On the plus side: -Affordable, especially when found on sale, on line -Lightweight @ 5 lbs -Very large vestibule that I could cook in if needed -Easy to set up -It comes with large stakes that can be rigged as deadman -Large rear window and vented vestibule control condensation -Hub and spoke pole construction looks strong for static snow loads -Large mesh pockets for storage along both sides Room for improvement -The tent is a little short. I am 6 ' 2" and there is about 12 inches of extra room. If I slide down a bit, my feet are touching the end of the tent One minor quibble: The pole that holds up the vestibule is mechanically connected to the outer tent with a sleeve and two velco straps. So the outside front side guy lines are mechanically connected to the poles for stability when there is force on the tent from the side. In contrast, on each side the center cross pole is connected to the outer tent with just two small velcro straps. So the two side guy lines are connected mechanically to the pole by just these two velcro straps. I have no near term plans to take this tent above tree level for mountaineering. In high winds even 10 pound mountaineering tents will start to deform from the side and the side poles aided by the guy lines are the resisting force. I wonder how well these two velcro straps will hold in such conditions.

Big Agnes String Ridge 2

I have had this tent now for two seasons and I love it. It the most stable design for winter use. It sheds a 60mph wind like a gentle breeze. The foot end of the tent has a zippered portion that you zip up or leave open to ventilate the tent better. The outer fly has two frog eye vents with built in supports that move air through to minimize condensation. I also like the fact that Big Agnes gives you snow stakes instead of the standard stakes. It is after all made to use in the winter. It is plenty roomy for 2 people and your gear. Cooking in the vestibule is very easy. Big Agnes poly coated the sill nylon in the fly to add additional strength and to make it more fire resistant. All in all this is my choice for a four season tent that excels in the harshest of weather. If you are looking for a bit more room the Royal flush is the next size bigger. It is a 3 person that actually sleeps 3 people.

Big Agnes String Ridge 2

After much debate over what tent is the best for 4 season mountaineering and camping between the staff members here at prolitegear.com we decided that the String Ridge 2 fit the bill. It is roomy inside for 2 people. The vestibule is ample enough to store gear and to cook in. The tie outs are all built to handle being pitched with skis. The frog eye vents make it really easy to vent for sleeping and cooking. Setup is a breeze with this tent. The hub system is easy to use. It keeps your time out in the cold to a minimum. After 2 seasons it is my go to tent for extended times in the mountains. 75% of prolite employees now use this tent.

Great Winter Tent

I use this tent for trips where there is a possibility of snow when backpacking and climbing at higher elevations. It has a lot of headroom, yet still remains sturdy in high winds when guyed out. Another plus is that it has a lot of reflective material on the tent making it easy to find after a late night hike. The tent also ventilates well as long as the temperature is below 40 degrees. The only downside of the tent is that the floor and the fly are pretty thin to save weight so you have to be careful with it.

Big Agnes String Ridge 2

I have been very impressed with the String Ridge. It's ventilationg system is awesome; really minimizing condensation issues while still holding in some pretty good heat. It is very stable in the wind--it was easily the most stable of a dozen or more tents in 40-50mph winds experienced on a Rainier climb earlier this summer. The layout is great and it offers a lot of space for the weight. The back of the tent offers a slightly higher profile than I'd like, but as long as it's angled into the wind I can't imagine it being an issue.

Best tent I have ever owned

I got this tent for my upcoming trip to Rainier. I really like the fly quick set up feature if you want to lighten the tent up in the summer. I also just took it on a fishing trip in Northern Maine and it poured and not one drop of water found it's way into the tent. Very happy so far.

The String Ridge 2 is really solid

I used the String Ridge 2 on a five day trip in the Weminuche Wildernss. We had rain everyday and two hard storms with night time lows about 40 degrees. The tent was very solid and waterproof. The only real problem was condensation on the inside of the roof at night. Even with the vent open the problem continued.

Big Agnes String Ridge 2

This tent is an excellent 4 season 2 man option. The vetilation is good, even for a double wall. The strength vs weight vs size compromises come out very nicely, it is nicely spacious and strong while remaining a light weight 4 season option. I'd highly recommend it.

BA String Ridge 2

The other reviews are spot on. Not much more to say other than this tent is bomber! It is truly a two person tent that will handle whatever winter throws at it. The String Ridge 2 is a great piece of kit from Big Agnes.
