Although the Megawatt Ski has been part of the Black Diamond family for a few seasons now, it was only recently that this mega-fat powder ski received a carbon upgrade. This version of the Megawatt was designed for the dawn patrollers and the backcountry travelers who prefer to keep their vertical human-powered. Massive tip rocker gets you up on top of the deep snow, the girthy 125mm waist keeps you floating through bottomless stashes, and the semi-rocker tail gives you touch of surfiness without sacrificing the control that's vital for dicing up steep lines. Black Diamond's engineers borrowed a page from some of their later sidecut designs and gave the Carbon Megawatt a tapered sidecut that holds a steady edge in variable conditions without feeling hooky or hung-up in the powder.

Carbon is the word of the year for this version of the Megawatt. Carbon fiber reinforcements take the place of some of the already-lightweight paulownia core and further reduce weight without reducing torsional stiffness. Torsion box construction helps this ski achieve the same, reliable feel underfoot at speed and deep in turns, despite a build that's much lighter weight than the standard Megawatt. Sometimes its nice to get more without paying for it, right?

Among other Black Diamond skis, this model is flanked by the fat Gigawatt, the original Megawatt, and the Zealot skis. Separated only by the carbon reinforcement upgrade, the Carbon Megawatt shares many of the same features and all the same dimensions with its twin, the original Megawatt. Only the Gigawatt is fatter than the Megawatt, and when the Megawatt is compared to the Zealot, its obvious that the Zealot offers a more versatile platform for big mountain and all-mountain charging. At its heart, the Carbon Megawatt is almost purely a touring-friendly powder ski.

USOutdoor.com (2012)
Black Diamond's Carbon Megawatt Skis are some of the best backcountry skis currently available. They are designed for touring untouched areas with deep snow. The Carbon Megawatt has an ultra wide 125 mm waist and a large Rocker Tip for superior performance in powder. A Semi-Rocker tail and tapered sidecut design improves release out of turns and makes the skis versatile enough to ride in variable snow conditions. A lightweight paulownia wood core with carbon fiber reinforcements ensures smooth arching turns due to advanced torsional stiffness. Three ribs further increase torsional stiffness as part of the brand's Formula One Technology.
At the same time, the design also minimizes the weight of the skis. The Carbon Megawatt is wider and more rockered than Black Diamond's popular Justice skis. The Carbon Megawatt allows the skier to achieve high speeds and excellent performance in deep powder or any soft snow conditions. It provides a surfy and balanced feel for a fun backcountry ride. The ideal use for these skis is 90 percent powder and 10 percent hard snow.

Evo (2014)
Escape the weekend crowds by hunting offpiste powder on the Black Diamond Carbon Megawatt Skis. Black Diamond's new ABS sidewall construction stripped another 500 grams from the Carbon Megawatt, making it incredibly light for its size, all the while increasing energy transmission to the sidewalls for increased edge hold and power. The result? Calling in sick for mid-week lift-served pow days is also an option on the Carbon Megawatts, thanks to the stiff carbon fiber reinforcement and semi-rockered tail for hard charging fun.

By adding pre-preg carbon fiber construction to this season's Black Diamond Carbon Megawatt skis they become more touring friendly than their legendary forebearers. By essentially taking a pound and a half off your feet, the Carbon Megawatts increase uphill speed and decrease fatigue. With no real downside to their powder performance, the addition of torsion box construction and sidewalls, help make the Megawatts swing and hold turns with dexterity.
