While I am not an expert at climbing (I am a master of falling off things, though), I have found this carabiner to be of excellent quality. It is solid and substantial (as another reviewer noted, it is bigger in real life than it seems in the photo). The mechanism is spring loaded, so it snaps into place automatically. The locking mechanism is manual, but very easy to use one handed with a tiny bit of practice. I found it easy to work even while wearing gloves. I have not fallen off anything with it (yet), but I have faith in it.

These are a great value at about 10 bucks. I like the true locking design as opposed to some of these new twist lock type which can be opened inadvertently by the friction of a sliding rope. I used to run an outdoor club and I got a few of these for my students. Simple and obvious operation for beginners, easy to use with heavy gloves, don`t cross-load due to the shape (no rope loading the gate). This, along with an XTC, Metolius leather belay gloves, and a black diamond harness make a great starter kit.

Very light weight, with a solid lock and large enough to belay off of. Doesn't scratch too much when dropped either.
