Hands ↓-w/ Out a Doubt The Best Lantern!

Let me first off state that I have tested a massive variety of camping/emergency-light-source lanterns to include battery operated, candle powered & fuel mantle lanterns, and without a doubt this lantern is the best/wins hands down when it comes down to terms of brightness, efficiency & most importantly, even disbursement of light (both horizontally as well as vertically – see pix!) . This even includes the fact that I have owned & both used Black Diamond's Apollo & Orbit model Lanterns!

To provide a quick synopsis, this lantern is not only bright enough to illuminate a plentiful area of light in 32 ft. in diameter (the manufacturers specs), but it actually illuminates even further! Also, it is extremely efficient in battery consumption considering the fact that I field tested this particular lantern @ 25° F on high using BOTH DoublePower LEDs, and it lasted for a solid eight hours running off of eneloop's XX rechargeable AA batteries (Low-Self-Dischage 2,500 mAh rated). Lastly, this is the only lantern that I have EVER owned to date, that has not only outputted an even amount of light horizontally, but has also done so vertically! Meaning there is not one single lantern out there to date that I have tested (to include fuel mantles), that can triumph the output of even angles of lights that this lantern can provide. I.E., all axes' of illumination has been easily covered by this lantern!

Bottom line, do not look or shop anywhere else for a lantern, than this one. You will not be disappointment!

Black Diamond vs. UCO Lanterns

So many choices, which to choose??? I didn't, I got the BD Apolllo, Voyager, Orbit, as well as UCO Clarus. They all are compact, some more than others. See specs. Light output varies, but as another reviewer said, all seemed relatively similar to the eye.

The BD lanterns all have a superior design as far as reduced glare is concerned. It also has a very fuctional split hook to hang, without using another clip. The duel light design is helpful if used as an area light straight down (ie, under tarp or in tent), but does not project a focused beam to be useful as a flashlight.

The UCO glare was so bad I was going to return it. But I discovered that if used upside-down, the glare is reduced a lot, enough that I will keep it now. The flashlight feature does actually project a focused beam out more than 20-30 feet.

My favorites are: UCO Clarus for best value, and BD Orbit/Voyager with duel light for best lantern.

Great Improvement on Apollo

I got this lantern for weekend camping with my son and his Cub Scout pack. At this point it is car camping but later on as he grows I expect we will be doing some backpacking so this is a nice compromise in size as it is noticeably smaller than the Apollo and seems to put out as much light. It is only slightly larger than the Orbit. However, the big improvement is that you now have a light that shines underneath the normal lantern--a dark unlighted area with the Orbit, Apollo and Titan (I have all three). As to the lamp underneath the lantern being a flashlight, it is very diffuse (i.e., not focused into a tight beam) and therefore does not provide useful light for more than 6-10 feet. All in all, a great new product that takes the place of the Apollo in my mind. If I need another lantern, I will purchase this one instead of the Apollo.

The happy median

A couple of weeks ago, I bought the Titan. To be honest, I wasn't that thrilled given the size and reported output. I decided I would return it. I saw this new model listed and given the flashlight mode that eliminates the dark spot, I'd give this one a try (at a lower cost). I tested it vs. the Orbit and Titan, and I can tell this will be my favorite. Even without the lower light on, the under dark spot is rather minimal.

If there is one tiny flaw, it's the tolerance on the sliding plastic (and this is being really nitpicky). The globe isn't as tight around the body as the Orbit and Titan.

When you take it out of the box you'll play with it (of course w/o reading the instructions) and think the button patterns don't make sense. Then you get used to it and then it becomes clear.

Great all around lantern

I've used this lantern for in-home use and camping. Thanks to it's high and low settings, it works equally well for both.
It's now been on two camping trips and I've used it to light the camp area at night, for reading in the tent, and as a flashlight just walking around after dark.
It fits great in my pocket and it's still going strong on the same set of batteries after a month of fairly regular use.

The (4) AA's might be a bit heavy for the minimalist backpacker, but the lantern is great for pretty much every thing else.

Button control takes a little getting used to, but very little.

Bright, compact, long lasting, adjustable. Great product.

Rugged, Multi-Featured, and Powerful

This combination camping flashlight and lantern efficiently covered all my needs on a 44 day camping trip to Maui, Hawaii. Especially helpful was the two-pronged clip at the top which hooked in easily to the middle top of the tent. Lit up the entire 4-person tent for a good length of time before it needed to have the batteries replaced. In fact, did this only once during the whole trip. Also invaluable was the flashlight feature at the bottom of the unit which I used on occasion. The dimming feature for the lantern was icing on the cake and the entire unit I found to be of a convenient size and design (collapsible). Really, top-of-the line for recreational use.

Great for Car Camping!

The Black Diamond Voyager Lantern is great, perfect for car camping. We used it in our Kingdom 6 and it lit the whole tent beautifully, plus the flashlight function helps to reduce the number of flashlights that we bring camping. However, I purchased this for backpacking and this has not worked out as I had planned. It was a bit bigger than I had hoped it would be and a bit heavier than I would have liked. I purchased a smaller, lighter Black diamond lantern for backpacking and returned this one though for the few camping trips I did take it on it was perfect, I just have too many lanterns to justify this one.

Great lantern for tent camping

I purchased the lantern for my S/O when she told me the LED flashlight I use was too bright for her. She wanted her own light to use when walking around the campsite at night and walking to the bathrooms. It's not as bright as some LED systems you may find but it does the job well when you want to light up what's right in front of you and when you want light in your tent. It's built well and depending on how you think about AA batteries they can come in handy. We love it for around the house and it's always nice to have a backup lantern.

Black Diamond Voyager Lantern

I liked the ease of switching from lantern to flashlight to both. It threw enough light for walking around the campsite at night to an adjustable brightness that was perfect for in-the-tent reading. When not in use, the lantern collapsed to a smaller size that fit into a pocket in my pack. I used the double open loop to hang the lantern inside the tent, the buttonhole on my shirt and a small branch of a tree. I brought it on a camping trip in the Sierra last month, and am taking it on my upcoming backpacking trip to Yosemite. I'm very happy with my purchase.
