Black Diamond Ascension Nylon Custom STS -

Get access to any mountain with a set of Black Diamond Skins this winter. The Ascension Nylon Custom STS skins give the best grip for climbing, while still gliding with ease. This year's model comes improved on the traditional Ascension design with new printed plush material. The longer fibers grab the snow for better climbing but sit flatter for easier gliding.

Black Diamond's improved skins add a bit of silicone to their glue for easier pulling apart. The glue is also temperature and compression active allowing it to become more tacky in the cold. A lighter weight design with the continued durability of previous models, this year's Ascension keeps the dense backing to avoid twisting when at the top of the mountain with frozen fingers and a need for powder.

The patented STS adjustable tail provides 10 cm of length adjustment on these skins while the adjustable tip attachment fits a wide range of ski tip shapes. These custom sized skins are pre-cut to fit the size ranges listed in the "width and "length" menus. The ranges in length come from the adjustable STS tail clip.

These skins come equipped and assembled with tip and tail clip. All 2012 BD Skins also include a new and improved zip closer, durable nylon ripstop bag.

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon Custom STS Reviews:

Reviews:

Black diamond pretty much owns the skin market for skis. G3 also makes quality skins but I've heard from people who've had both that the Black diamond ones are a bit more durable (haven't tested this personally though) The adhesive works even if it gets a wet and the grip even on steep slopes is impressive. If you're going to do any steep climbing, go with the ascension over the mohair because it grips better on steeper slopes. I recommend getting a skin that is at about as wide as the ski is underfoot. Obviously the tip and tail of the ski will be wider and the skin won't cover it completely, but if it's at least as wide as the center of the ski it should be able to climb with minimum slippage.

I've skinned about 350,000 ft. in the last year and a half with these. My grades:
Durability: A+. Even after "all those" feet, these things show almost no wear.
Climbing: A+. These things grip like duct tape to the snow and ice.
Glue: B+. I had to re-glue these after a year. This could be the skins or me.
Weight: B-. These things are heavy, but, overall, for a skin at this price that's this reliable, that's a trade-off you may need to make.
Glide: C. Again, these aren't the most expensive skins so you can't expect them to be the best all-around, but the glide of these is like pedaling a bike while lightly pulling the hand brake. My friends on Dynafit skins motor away from me on the flats and mellower ascents.
Overall: B+.

These were my first backcountry skins and I found them easy to trim and use. Although the G3 cutting tool is much better, the BD too will get the job done for you! They also come with skin savers and a breathable package to carry them in. This is especially a plus because not all skins come with skin savers or a package. Black Diamond also has a youtube video to walk you through the trimming process, I found it very helpful.

Get the G3 skin cutter. The method BD gives for cutting the skin does give a very good result. The G3 tool makes cutting the skin so easy and the result is a perfect contoured skin to your ski. So far the G3 Alpinist and the Ascension performed about equal. I'm on a 192cm Armada TsT twin tip and the largest Ascension just fits, but after one quick tour in the Shuksan area, they did well.

I purchased these for my black diamond megawatts and have only used them for a week of skiing. Cutting them with the included tool was super easy and they were very grippy. They were on the heavier side of the skins I?ve used but I don?t do all day tours enough for it to matter. For the money theyre a great skin and I would recommend them

Dan Kasali at Backcountry.com on 06/24/2013

Still going strong after 3 seasons of moderate use. I'm not very careful with them, gotten mud and plenty of pine needles on them and they still grip great. The tail clip isn't the best for twin tips as I've lost mine, but they still stick to my skis without them, and I could get replacements for cheap if I wish to.

Jackson Arvidson at Backcountry.com on 12/02/2013

Love these skins. Not quite the glide of my MoHair, but they stick like nothing else. I ordered wider than fattest part of skis then cut down according to video at left.

Adam D at Backcountry.com on 01/30/2013

I've had these skins every year for the past 5 years or so and they have been on point every time! Keep up the good work BD

Mitch Potter at Backcountry.com on 11/28/2013

This is my first and only pair of skins and they work well. The glue has stuck even when wet and the grip has surprised me.
