Think of the Black Diamond Axe Protector as a scabbard for your ice axe. The Axe Protector protects your Gore-Tex®, nylon and Cordura from an accidental slice. The Axe Protector also prevents premature dulling of your pick and adze as the axe slides around the trunk as you wind your way up Hyalite canyon.

Great protection for your axe

Well, as with most my axes, I would always end up poking something with them. Rather it be my packs or myself, those sharp points always found a way to snag something. The BD pick/adze protectors are a great way to keep those sharp points covered during storage or transport. Just make sure that your axe is dry before storing, as the plastic will hold moisture and rust will form all over your adze and pick. Just air-dry everything really well beforehand and you're good to go. Overall, they're easy to use and do their intended job well. They look quite durable and I can see them lasting many years of use.

This is exactly what you need when you throw the axe in your trunk or strap it on to your pack. cheap but very effective. I didnt buy the spike protector (thought it was superfluous) but this is 100% necessary if you have an axe. BD should just raise the axe price 5 bucks and have it come with this.

These will fit any axe and are the best quality of the axe/pick/spike protectors out there.
Other brands are one piece rubber, and they tend to dry out and crack, making them useless. The bungees on BD's protectors last years, and the rubber scabbards don't get strained and crack over time.
Buy these once, or the others a few times over.

Yeah these are for geeks, but I find they are great for travel and for running your axes in the pack. Nothing worse than ripping a hole in your pack or bag and 5 bucks will save you the trouble. These will work on other axes other than BD ones as well. Worth it to me.

Axe Protector

Wanted a protector for my Raven Pro BD Ice Axe. This worked great on my Rainer trip and also aided in attaching the Axe to the built in Ice Axe loops on my pack. Quick and easy to use and for Rainer it was very light, so I took it with me to base camp.

I can't see a reason not to buy and use one of these. I use this version on my mountaineering ice axe to keep it from ripping up my pack and other gear. Really light and easy to use. Also keeps the kids from causing a head injury while at home.

Great Axe (and clothing) Protector

Great, durable product. The pick protector slides on snug, the adze protector is perfect for BD axes. I had one of the rubber protectors, but the rubber wore through and the connecting strand can break.

More than protecting your axe, saves your clothing or other gear during travel.

Why would you not have this. It protects your precious gear from the edges of your axe. I have it on my Black Diamond Raven and it fits perfectly. Buy it, for 10 bucks you could save yourself one Helluva headache when your axe shreds your gear.

Great product!

Works great on my two BD axes, haven't tried it on any other brands yet, but seems it will fit any normal ice axe. Great for travels and free riding when you tote an axe on your backpack for safety.
jooonas at REI on 04/04/2010

I probably would not take it up the mountain summit day, but this is really nice for packing the suitcase or storage. I just wish they did not sell the pick/adze and point protectors separately.

Negative Reviews:

Nice but not universal

Thought this was supposed to be a universal fit. I have an older set of black diamond prophet straight shaft ice axes that I want to use for mountaineering. This fits well enough not to fall off, but does not full protect. It would fit a regular mountaineering axe.
