Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack
| Rating: | ![]() |
I used to own the Black Diamond Covert Winter Pack. The integrated Avalung is definitely a sick tool. This is a great pack to take up if you're planning on doing some hiking or skiing out of bounds, or even for short BC tours. I owned the older 22L pack in a L/XL (6'1, 175), which was a bit small for my taste, but the 32L, or the newer 30L, is a great do it all pack. The ski carry is awesome, adding a lot of stability over other packs I have used, and fits HUDGE skis (my Fatypus Alotta's, 140mm waist with a twin, fit tightly but well). Definitely the go to pack for day trips and sidecountry yoyoing. It even doubles as a summer hike/bike pack!

Great all around day backcountry pack

This pack it built well and fits all necessary gear for a good long day in your favorite backcountry zone. With the Avalung the straps might feel a little uncomfortable on your shoulders but with a few sessions it should break in nicely. Another great thing about this pack is the stow-away helmet pouch. Everyone should be wearing a helmet while skiing so a pack with a place to strap your helmet on for those grueling climbs is definitely a plus. If you are looking for a pack with a little more room check out the anarchist avalung. But for the avid day tripper this pack should be perfect.

nice day pack | |

I like this pack because you can fit everything you need for killer day in the backcountry. The organization is good and efficient. I always ski with the avalung ready to go in case the crap hits the fan. I feel a little bit safer dropping into hazardous terrain knowing that my avalung could save me if buried by a slide. The avalung also doubles as a snow snorkel when the chin deep snow is clogging your airway!

Review Title | |

Great fit, perfect size - nice organization. One of the few packs that I wouldn't change much on. Not sure if I agree with the review below - both avalungs and airbags have their advantages and disadvantages. The problem with airbags is that they are VERY expensive, and won't protect you in the event of a secondary slide.

Good intentions... | |

I used this pack all last year. Its a great pack, and does a great job carrying stuff, but after getting in a big slide in Alaska last year I realized that its very unlikley you'll be able to keep the snorkle in your mouth if you are caught in a slide. I am looking forward to buying an airbag backpack this season. It's worth the $$$$ if it saves you life.
