ProLite Gear
Built with durable lightweight aluminum and featuring both their compactable and FlickLock® adjustability, the Black Diamond Distance FL defines versatile support. Ideal for everything from backpacking to short day hikes, the Distance FL's 20 cm of adjustability lets you tweak the length for sidehilling and changing inclines. Much like their avalanche probes, their speed cone deployment employs a coated inner Kevlar cord and conical shaft ends for quick and strong alignment. You simply grab the grip and the first shaft section, and pull them away from each other. The pole will snap into place and lock. Each speed cone guides a shaft section into place and stiffens the joint when the pole is locked. They also have a lightweight EVA grip with mini extension for quick choke-ups on steep inclines and interchangeable tips for variable trail surfaces.

Does the job

I originially bought these trekking poles thinking I would probably use them backpacking, but primarily as a means to pitch the tent I had just bought. I had never used trekking poles before, but I am so glad I have them now! My first backpacking adventure I somehow got off the trail and had to hike uphill through a foot of detritus to get back on the trail and my trekking poles made it so much easier!

I love how easy they are to adjust, probably my favorite thing about them. They are super comfortable to hold and sturdy. When I'm not using them they fold down and I can easily strap them on my pack.

Cancel previous review--very good poles

In a previous review (that I'll delete if I can) I criticized these for collapsing easily. Turns out I missed the specifications on how to lock them in. With that taken care of they are great poles--I used them on a 300 mile trek and they held up wonderfully, are light and comfortable. Only criticism is that BD tries to get too fancy with the straps, but it's not a deal breaker. Only concern is whether I'll be able to switch out the tips when they wear out--there is some ambiguity on that.

Adjustable and Compact

Black Diamond really shines with the Distance FL Z-Poles. They combine the strength, weight savings, and compact size of fixed length poles and add just the right amount of adjustability. Perfect for hikers who camp with tarps- you can tension your shelter without hassle. They also excel when transitioning from uphill to downhill - just extend the upper segments and keep hiking.

great poles, tiny wrist straps

My favorite poles, ever. Incredibly easy to adjust, super light weight, fold small enough to fit in my day pack or a tote bag. The one drawback: the wrist straps are too small to fit over winter gloves. Way too small. Next time I will try the men's model.

love these poles

easily snaps into place, single adjustment, folds up to put inside daypack. Just used them on the haute route in tha alps; only problem was in deep snow where lack of a basket hurts performance

Negative Reviews:

Good design idea, failed implementation

These poles are based on a great idea--several segments of pole that fit together (like tent poles) with only one segment adjustable for height. That way they can fold very small and are still fully adjustable. They put together easily and are light and comfortable to use...til you use them. The problem is that there is nothing but the aluminum pole shaft overlap where they fit together holding the poles together! That is, unlike tent poles there is no tension line to hold the pole segments together so as soon as you put any weight on them or stick them in soft ground the segments come apart as you retract them. These are useless for any surface more demanding than pavement. What a pathetic failure--were these never field tested, or did Black Diamond market them knowing they were useless?
