Handy and compact

I like the way it folds up into such a compact package for stowing. I also like how quick and easy it is to deploy and the fact that you do not have to worry about the slippage that can occur with twist-lock joints that are commonly used on many kinds of adjustable trek poles.

On the negative side, this means that you cannot adjust the length of the poles to suit the terrain. Instead you are provided with a slightly lengthened hand grip, which allows you to move your hands up or down about one hand-width on the grip to adjust for changes in grade.

They seem plenty sturdy for my purposes, but I do not believe they are recommended for heavy duty backpacking.

Lightweight Trekking Poles

I have owned my Z-Poles for about two years now, and have used them on four or five backpacking trips. The best thing about them is how light they are. The second best thing is how easy they are to extend. The lack of length adjustment hasn't bothered me at all.

My only real complaint is that snow baskets are not available. My first hike with the Z-Poles involved climbing some icy snow to the peak, and I jury-rigged Black Diamond's accessory snow baskets for their other trekking poles to work with some wire, but it was a pain. However, the review that says that the baskets are not replaceable is incorrect; only the one style is available, however, and REI does not sell them.

Sweet Poles

I love the z-fold aspect. They compact down to a travel size, without being too expensive.

I was weary at first about the design, thinking they'd either come undone easily, or they'd be weak at the joints. Nether is true. The locking mechanism keeps them pulled tightly so they can't fold up while in use. Also, they've held up to a couple stumbles where I've put a lot of weight on them, so I know they aren't weak, either.

The only downside is that they are not adjustable at all. Keep that in mind, and if it doesn't pose problems for you, I highly recommend them.

I've used other poles before but these are hands down my favorite. I've used these for backpacking trips and they are very light and pack down to one of the smallest sizes for trekking poles. They don't have any shocks in them like some poles but because they are so light I feel they don't really need them. I was worried about not being able to adjust the height on them but I just adjusted my grip and they worked perfectly on uphill and downhill. Using them makes hiking and backpacking easier hands down.

Love these poles!

I just returned from 5 days hiking in the Annapurna District of Nepal. These poles fit neatly into a carry-on bag and are super light.

They were the envy of my trekking group (all women.) One woman was even going to return the poles that se had brought and buy these.

The limited height options might be a problem for some, but I was fine with the shortest size.

I find the tips hard to change, but this would not deter me from buying these poles.

Great for Travel

Sometimes I want hiking poles when I'm on vacation in Central America. Traditional hiking poles don't pack very well in a 22 inch suitcase, so these fit the bill. Because they are aluminum, I wrapped them in bubble wrap to prevent damage while traveling in a suitcase. They are nice and lightweight and fit easily into a day pack when not in use. Assembly is quick and easy: fit the pieces together and the pull up on the grip until you see the pin come out.

Unique Design Enhances Performance

Despite the cons shown above, I still give these poles top rating because of their advantages ..... I used these to help me walk after back and hip surgery. Now I use them for wilderness hikes and long urban hikes. They are the quickest poles to deploy and fold. Folding small and being lightweight makes it easy to carry them, ready for use.
Ron at Campmor on 04/04/2013

I've hiked about 650 miles with these poles, they are lightweight, extremely durable for the construction and easy to use. The only suggestion I have for these is to install the carbide tips. The rubber tips that come installed (the carbide tips are in the bag) wear down after about 100 miles.

Slippery When Wet

This is the 1st hiking stick I have purchased and used. It seems quite durable given its light weight. My only real complaint is it can be a bit difficult to get a good grip to lock the poles in place with wet hands or sun screen interfearing with your grip.

Satisfied perf. GC R2R2R

Held up well for me with a too-heavy (aren't they all) pack on a R2R2R hike of the Grand Canyon last June; always felt secure with them, they maneuvered well and they're lightweight. One must be okay with two and only two positions on the grips, rather than infinitely-adjustable telescoping poles.

Negative Reviews:

Z-Pole Trekking

Was not obvious on literature/by looking at that baskets were not replaceable.
Ted Stryker at REI on 04/04/2013

Neutral Reviews:

Handle strap broke almost immediately

The handle strap broke off the right hiking pole just after 1 day of hiking. It simply fell off with only light use of one day of new poles. I was forced to suboptimally use them for the rest of the 7 day hiking trip. Upon my return, REI fully replaced the defective pair.

Aside from the strap issue, the poles were very light, stable, and easily collapsable. I am hoping the new pair will last a long time, since in general these seem like good poles.
Brian68 at REI on 10/10/2013

Great Poles with a flaw

We both used these for our Inca Trail hike and the training hikes before going and they were just what we needed. EXCEPT...the wrist straps on both pair are fraying. Disappointed in this and hope to find a pair without this problem.
