Black Diamond Glidelite Mohair Mix Custom STS -

More supple, 20% more packable and 40 g (1.4 oz) lighter than similar Ascension models, the Glidelite Mohair Mix Custom STS skins are the perfect balance between glideability and climbability. This year's model comes improved on the traditional Mohair Mix design with new printed plush material for the optimal blend of 65% mohair and 35% nylon. The longer fibers grab the snow for better climbing but sit flatter for easier gliding.

Black Diamond's improved skins add a bit of silicone to their glue for easier pulling apart. The glue is also temperature and compression active allowing it to become more tacky in the cold. The patented STS adjustable tail provides 10 cm of length adjustment on these skins while the adjustable tip attachment fits a wide range of ski tip shapes. These custom sized skins are pre-cut to fit the size ranges listed in the "width and "length" menus. The ranges in length come from the adjustable STS tail clip.

These skins come equipped and assembled with tip and tail clip. All 2012 BD Skins also include a new and improved zip closer, durable nylon ripstop bag.

Black Diamond Glidelite Mohair Mix Custom STS Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Excellent!

I am on my third season with these skins and they are excellent. The BD product description is accurate. They may provide slightly less traction then some of the all synthetic skins I've had but the reduction in weight and packing size more then make up for it for me. Used properly I have had no issues with the adhesive and the provide better glide then the synthetic skins I've used (over 25+ years).

Negative Reviews:

Better for touring than steeper BC

These skins are relatively easy to trim to your skis, and the attachment methods are not that bad. Beware of having a tip too wide, as the loop only fits a certain width of tip (mine just barely go through it, making the front attachment less than secure, though this was my mistake, not BD's).

The glue: sticks well if you can keep it perfectly dry. As soon as you get an ounce of snow on it, that part of the skin won't stick essentially for the rest of the day. I use the mesh backing and am very careful with these, but after a day of doing laps or a longer day trip, they are usually held on by only the mechanical attachments no matter how careful I'm being.

The hair: I could see mohair being wonderful for long, less-than-steep tours. However, take these things on a slope >25-30 degrees and they start to slide, a lot. Almost everyone I ski with has nylon skins, and I'm regularly sliding backwards in tracks that they feel totally secure in. This, again, means I'm probably using mohair when I should be using nylon, but please keep this in mind when considering these for backcountry use in steep terrain.
