Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Just fine.

I just picked this up. I'm a big fan of Black Diamond as a brand, so I naturally gravitated to this helmet. I tried a few on. The Petzl Meteor III was lighter and seemed a bit more comfortable, but was $50 more expensive. The Half-Dome seemed a bit awkward at fist, but after I figured out how it's meant to be worn, the M/L fit my head just fine, and can be adjusted to be rather snug, if you like. I didn't add any pros and cons from REI's pre-selected list, because I felt like a lot of the descriptions missed the point as most of these observations are highly subjective. I'm of the opinion that a climbing helmet is most useful for protecting your head from small falling debris from high walls, that might otherwise kill or disorient you. Not designed for much else. Breathability depends on temp and humidity, in my experience. The bottom line is this helmet is perfectly suitable for me, it's easily adjustable, it comes from a brand I know and trust, and it seems to be of quality manufacturing.

I was between sizes, ended up going up to the M/L…but I probably would have been ok with the S/M. There is plenty of adjustability in these helmets, so dialing in the perfect fit isn’t that hard.
it saved my dome twice on a recent climbing trip. Once when I smoked myself with an ice hammer, direct hit, right in the front. I thought for sure it would have cracked the light weight plastic, t my surprise, no damage and I didn’t lose any brain cells. And the second when a softball sized ice cranked my skull at a belay station.
Bottom line, its tough, looks great, light, and stays on your head. Plus its black diamond, come on.

A much needed upgrade on an older model.

Let's face it- unless you had a very regular-shaped head, the old Half Dome sucked. I had one and I gave it away. That's how much I hated it. You see, I have what can only be described as a dorsal fin running the entire top of my head. The old Half Dome ate into it and was very uncomfortable- like farting at the inlaws' dinner table uncomfortable. The new one is lighter, super comfy, and much more functional. I've worn it watching TV for the hell of it. I have yet to actually bash my head in the thing, but I have a feeling it would perform beautifully.

Awesome helmet with comfort and style

While I can't attest to the protective functions of this helmet, since it's a protective piece of equipment, and fortunately I have not had any accidents with the helmet thus far... It is a comfortable helmet that has an easy click wheel to adjust to the size of your head quickly and easily. Also allows you to put the thing on and adjust accordingly because of the click wheel adjustment. This helmet comes in a variety of colors so you can color code gear accordingly or have options to what color of helmet you'd like, as opposed to the standard white and gray that most helmets have.

rocks dont play well with skulls, unless halfdome is in the mix

This helmet has been protecting what IQ I have left, and does a great job of it. Fits well over beanie for cold ascents, or over a basebal cap for the hot summer days. Fits in a pack well, and is durable when being handed around the crag or even when getting biners dropped on your head from a not so competent climbing buddy. Or small rocks they kick on you do to your last mean comment. This helmet will protect you from all. Not so much floods or hurricanes but pretty much anything you could run of fall into while climbing.

Light and Comfy

I bought this helmet to protect my dome while I work in trees as an arborist. The light weight and fit of the helmet make me totaly forget it's on. Unless I'm working upside down I don't even need to clip the chin strap. I got it in grey and it still stays fairly cool on summer days in Texas. The wheel in the back makes for easy adjustment for hats or beenies in the winter. I have been told I have a big head and the M/L fights with some room to spare. Plus it's cheeper then its Italian counter parts.

Killer Value, Durable, Lightweight

Ive been using one half dome or another for over 10 years. The half dome helmet is light weight, not too hot, and very easy to adjust. It fits my huge head, even with a hat on. Ive used the half dome for everything from cragging, big walls in California, and alpine ice in the Cordillera Blanca and it hasnt let me down.If you want the lightest and most ventilated helmet out there, spend twice as much and get a meteor or the new vector helmet. But for this price, this helmet doesnt disappoint.
darin at Moosejaw on 10/04/2012

I wear a hard hat frequently at work. The half-dome, when adjusted properly, lock on to my head just as solidly as a hard hat, but the weight and ventilation is beyond compare. You will easily forget you have it on. That is a very important point. Protective gear is useless if you don't wear it due to comfort.
I have yet to take a good kenockeling with it, and I pray I don't. But because of the comfort factor, I'm sure to be wearing it if the situation even remotely calls for it.

Pat Palmer at Backcountry.com on 10/04/2012
The helmet is pretty comfortable and ridged, its fits perfect when you adjust the straps and twist the knob in the back. i have worn the helmet for 8 hrs some days and i forgot i had it on. I must say that it could use just a lil more padding but i'm fine with the way it is and I'm pretty picky about my things. my light fits good on top when caving and it doesn't pull the helmet forward either.

Excelent Helmet

This helmet is a great upgrade from the old BD Half Dome. The adjustable wheel control in the back is way smoother to operate and it all tucks inside the helmet for easier storage. Overall it is very comfortable and lightweight. The headlamp clips are a little harder to use - you have to get a fingernail under it and lift instead of just sliding the headlamp band into it. It feels more secure and isn't too big of a pain though.

Lightweight, Easily adjustable, doesnt breath very well

Its very light and very easily adjustable which I like a lot. Most days I can wear it all day and not realize I have it on. If its especially hot though I notice it because it doesn't breath all that well. Most of the time on those days I find myself climbing without a helmet. For the price the quality is pretty good but if you really want protection from anything but biners and small rocks falling the plastic shell isn't going to do it. Better than nothing for sure, but you really have to spend a little more for a great helmet.
