Good But Goofy

Bought this helmet after trying quite a few on over about a 6-month period. It was the most comfortable at this price point: fair amount of soft pads spaced evenly under the styrofoam and the dial-suspension is clutch. The balance is pretty good--you don't feel much weight. The headlamp clips are a little too short, but lock a standard ~1" elastic strap in in just fine.
I intentionally didn't look at myself in a mirror prior to buying this because just about every helmet makes me look like a tool and I knew that would be too discouraging. Despite that, I was still shocked at just how high this helmet sits on my mellon (which is admittedly somewhat pointy). Made me realize that I have just about zero protection coming from anywhere but straight above, which is fine for falling rocks but leaves something to be desired for protection around the crown. Do an image search for people actually using this & you'll see what I mean.
Anyway, I'd still recommend this one. It might save your life & is a clutch gopro mount if nothing else.

Just fine.

I just picked this up. I'm a big fan of Black Diamond as a brand, so I naturally gravitated to this helmet. I tried a few on. The Petzl Meteor III was lighter and seemed a bit more comfortable, but was $50 more expensive. The Half-Dome seemed a bit awkward at fist, but after I figured out how it's meant to be worn, the M/L fit my head just fine, and can be adjusted to be rather snug, if you like. I didn't add any pros and cons from REI's pre-selected list, because I felt like a lot of the descriptions missed the point as most of these observations are highly subjective. I'm of the opinion that a climbing helmet is most useful for protecting your head from small falling debris from high walls, that might otherwise kill or disorient you. Not designed for much else. Breathability depends on temp and humidity, in my experience. The bottom line is this helmet is perfectly suitable for me, it's easily adjustable, it comes from a brand I know and trust, and it seems to be of quality manufacturing.

Light and Comfy

I bought this helmet to protect my dome while I work in trees as an arborist. The light weight and fit of the helmet make me totaly forget it's on. Unless I'm working upside down I don't even need to clip the chin strap. I got it in grey and it still stays fairly cool on summer days in Texas. The wheel in the back makes for easy adjustment for hats or beenies in the winter. I have been told I have a big head and the M/L fights with some room to spare. Plus it's cheeper then its Italian counter parts.

Nice Helmet, Great Design!

I have had the opportunity to use this helmet multiple times since I purchased it and so far it has been great. The only issue I have with it is that the helemt rests high on my head with well over an inch and a half between the top of my ear and the rim of the helmet. I am not sure if a larger size would offer more coverage of my head, but I would just have to try a larger size to see.

This is an awesome helmet. I had the previous model, and this one is lighter, and so far just as functional. I've so far used if for rock climbing up at Squamish, and in the future plan to use it for ice climbing, and general mountaineering.
Sizing: I'm 5'1", female, and the S/M size fits me perfectly, and still has room to expand to fit a hat or bandanna underneath. I'd recommend the smaller size if you have a smaller head (like me).

Excelent Helmet

This helmet is a great upgrade from the old BD Half Dome. The adjustable wheel control in the back is way smoother to operate and it all tucks inside the helmet for easier storage. Overall it is very comfortable and lightweight. The headlamp clips are a little harder to use - you have to get a fingernail under it and lift instead of just sliding the headlamp band into it. It feels more secure and isn't too big of a pain though.

Solid helmet

This is a solid helmet. I took it on a two day trip to Smith Rock and it performed beautifully. I didn't actually get hit by a rock, but it was very comfortable to wear (I actually forgot I had it on a few times). My one complaint would be that it scuffs easily (I put it down gently on a rock and there was a small scratch when I picked it back up). Great helmet for a great price.

Good all-around helmet

I own a previous generation Half Dome Helmet, and found that the new ones are a bit lighter and more comfortable, but also feel slightly less solid. I'm sure this is probably thanks to industry pressures to go with light and fast as opposed to (slightly) heavier and rugged. That being said, I have no doubt that the new helmets are good performers- I've already banged my head with it on a few climbs with no ill effects!

Great affordable helmet

Worked as I thought it would. The small/medium was more on the smaller side so I returned it and got a medium/large. I haved used it for ice climbing with a liner underneath and I am looking forward to using it in Redwing, MN in the coming weeks.

While ice climbing, small chunks of ice fell on me while belaying. I have not put this thing to any hard tests, but I hope I never have to.
dootay at REI on 04/04/2013

performed as expected!

i bought this helmet because my bike or snowboard helmet wouldn't cut it while rappelling in zion canyon, and i am very happy with its performance. i used it again when caving at lava beds.

it did the job of protecting my head from the occasional bumps and scuffs, it worked great with my buff sweatband and petzl headlamp, and i look forward to getting it out in the wild again soon!

Completely Adequate

I've been using this helmet pretty continuously since I've purchased it. I've worn it on a few multipitches, some of which were all day endeavors. The good thing about this helmet, is that it works. However, after taking a minor beating, it appears that it needs to be replaced sooner than I'd have wanted. There's a pretty sizable dent in it from lightly hammering it against a stuck BD stopper in a crack (using a nut tool) and I expected slightly more resilience for the price. Either way, I'm happy with this purchase.
Eric the Guy at REI on 11/11/2013

I bought this without really trying on helmets or reading reviews and regretted it. It's not a bad helmet, but on a friend's recommendation I ended up trying on some other helmets and doing more research while the Half Dome was on it's way. After receiving the Half Dome and trying it on, I ended up returning it for the Petzl Elios which is a more comfortable helmet and just a little more expensive.
