Black Diamond Ion Headlamp

REI

Keep it in your pocket or stashed in your pack, the Black Diamond Ion is so light and compact there's no reason to ever be left in the dark again.

  • Great as an emergency backup or as your primary light for featherweight expeditions, the Ion is the size of a book of matches
  • One bright 0.5-watt LED bulb lights the way; high and low settings let you determine how much light you need
  • Pivotable head allows you to aim the beam where you need it most; tough construction withstands use in rain, snow and sleet
  • On/off switch requires you depress the button for one second to turn on, reducing inadvertent, battery-draining operation while stowed in your pack
  • Slim half-inch elastic headband adjusts with a slider to fit over a climbing helmet or a hat
  • Battery included

The Icon, with its blowtorch-like three-watt LED, is our favorite light for the earliest of early starts up high. Paired with the rechargeable NRG Battery Kit (sold separately), the Icon lowers the impact on your wallet and the environment. And when you’re lucky enough to be nowhere near an outlet, you can use alkalines and the economy setting for up to 200 hours of burn time. The four auxiliary SuperBright LEDs have their own multiple brightness settings and are plenty powerful enough to light up the trail or for brew prep at base camp. The Icon’s battery-power meter is dual-purpose: displaying via a green, yellow or red LED either the amount of battery power left or the charging status of the NRG rechargeable battery.

handy headlight

This is the second one of these I have owned. It is so small that I always carry it in my pocket. It's very useful. The first one lasted 4 years before the switch gave out. That's pretty good. The only drawback is that the batteries are $5. I therefore don't use it for long term applications. The light is adequately bright for the first phase and then will be slowly dim.

Good price and good quality

North to Alaska at Mountain Gear on 08/18/2008

Lightweight and durable especially for the price. The lamp only has on and off, no dim setting or blinking features. There is a sufficient beam adjustment; however, the adjustment is not as good as others on the market. Never has been throughly tested in water thrus far - only light rain.

i would buy this product again

Light and Bright

This is a great light. Fits well with all kinds of headwear. I'm a little concerned about the ready availability of the required 6Volt battery. No spare lights -- but probably not needed since they're LEDs.

I swear by this light, not at it

Knucklehead Smith at Mountain Gear on 10/24/2007

I mount this light on the front of my cycling helmet with a small zip tie. I use it to read road signs and route arrows, maps, and my hr monitor. The best use, for me, is when I need to make a roadside repair or find gear in my saddlebag at night. I can change a flat or fix my bike without having to hold a flashlight AND tools. When it's 4 a.m. and I'm in the middle of farmland, I know I've got light. I always carry a spare battery. The only drawback is when I go into some stores people assume it's a camera. When my life gets so interesting that I have to film everything I do then I'll stop leading such an interesting life...
