Black Diamond Lockdown Leash -
Black Diamond designed the Lockdown Leash with a simple sliding release that allows one-handed use and makes it a great choice for both steep ice and alpine climbing. Just hook the Lockdown Leash's open loop over your tool's hammer or adze and pull down. The wrist loop opens to free your hand so you can place ice screws, and it allows you back in easily. This Black Diamond leash attaches to the head of any technical ice tool, and allows you to plunge your shaft into steep snow without releasing.

Fabric:

  • Adjustable nylon web leash with padded wrist loop secures around wrist quickly with a simple slipknot
  • Simple but safe attachment to your ice tool with nylon leash and steel pass-through buckle

Fit:

  • Fits ice tools up to 75 cm

Padding:

  • Padded wrist strap for comfort and even weight distribution
  • Ergonomic twist keeps the wrist pad flat on your arm for increased comfort

Support and Cushioning:

  • Leash aids in support and balance as well as acting as a safety tether

Features:

  • Releases with a quick tug of the easy-grab pull loop, oversized so gloved hands can grab it
  • Smaller buckle allows for wrist tension adjustment; keeps your hands from falling asleep
  • Slip-knot configuration tightens when weighted; release by hooking and pulling loop with hammer or adze
  • Hang by your skeleton instead of your muscles for increased endurance
  • Ambidextrous design; simple adjustment converts it from right- to left-handed operation
  • Rated to 2 kN
  • Large finger loop to open the wrist loop; easy off with your teeth, gloved finger, or over the adze/hammer

Black Diamond Lockdown Leash Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

This leash works well and is infinitely adjustable. It is pretty easy to use but the loop that you use to get in and out of it is pretty big and could get caught on things. I use this on a mountaineering axe but this would work well with ice tools that don't have specific leashes. One nice feature is the buckle that keeps the leash from getting too tight.

Nice leash

I got this for my 65mm BD Raven Pro ice axe. I had to go on-line to search for information to figure out how to install and wear it. It fits well and looks like it will hold a large load. I ended up adjusting it as far out as possible to get just enough length to switch axe hands while traversing steep slopes.

This is a fantastic leash for mountaineering. Its very secure and comfy. Although for leading it be tricky if your tool has an adze. It a huge step up from the old twist leash I previously had. Its fully adjustible, and should work for any technical tool.

simple leash

This thing is pretty straight forward, however, it is not made for axes over 70cm (this was clearly printed on the packaging, but not on the web site). Easy to use, the loop makes changing hands pretty easy, even with gloves on.

Much needed item

This leash saved my ice axe from tumbling down the mountain. Very comfortable and has a good length to it for the numerous ways of using the ice axe.

Ice Axe Leash

Simple, but effective.
Dunc at Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) on 10/10/2008

Negative Reviews:

The leash is one of the shortest leashes that can be purchased. This could be seen as a positive or negative thing; the loop has a tendency to loosen and slip off the wrist.

Peter Borschowa at Backcountry.com on 07/08/2011

Neutral Reviews:

Wrist strap quick release dangerous.

Basic strap is good. Worried about the quick release catching something and allowing the leash to come off. It slips on and off fine without it, I see this addition as more of a hazard than a benefit. Thumb strap should be removed.
