Black Diamond Momentum SA Harness Reviews:

Best one for me

Im new to the sport but that doesnt mean I cant tell a good product when I see and wear one. I went into REI store with some friends who are seasoned climbers and harness selection is subjective , its what your body likes the best. I tried every harness on in the store and this one was the most comfortable and im clibing 5.10a indoor and its holding up to the abuse so far. When i hung from rei rope in store this harness kept me more upright while the other harnesses had me leaning backward and when you fall or coming down a route I dongt want to be leaning backward forcing me to use my stomach and back muscles to keep me upright.

The size if im correct was one to large but ill have to double check that. I do not have my harness right now but I believe i got a small instead of medium. Im 5'9 145-150lbs, waist 33-34 but i believe i got the small, which has room to expand a inch or two outward.

The leg adjustments are easy to move and so far they have stayed in place but i wish they could be tightened like the waist on the harness but thas not really a problem.

This is a great harness and the price is great. Theres other harnesses twice the price but this one beats them all for me.

Which harness should you get? Whatever one youll use and fits you best, for me its this one

Best harness I've used

I'm new to climbing and have been hitting the indoor gym 2-3 times a week since the summer. This harness replaced my Mammut Togir Light that I had started on. Really just wanted something a little more 'sturdy' feeling and comfortable. The Togir would give me a hell of a wedgie and is so thin I'd start thinking about it if I were high up. Not totally knocking the Togir, I had no safety problems with it, but it really is a 'light' harness. A little too light for me.

The Momentum is well built, quite comfortable and has all the normal features you would expect. Unlike the other reviewer it fits my legs quite nicely, and the overall fit is great. Definitely subjective though. I have a 33" waist, and I went for the large since I have extra room for tightening when wearing more layers.

Excellent Harness

I got this harness after a recommendation from a friend. For the price, it doesn't get much better. The only complaint I have is that the size medium is just a little too big for my 28 inch waist and the small sized harness was too small.

However, the pros are incredibly numerous. Despite the size problem I have, it's still an incredibly comfortable harness. It's very simple to put on and use and is padded very nicely. The loops on the waist and on the back are also a nice feature that allow for quick access to chalk bags, belay systems, etc.

For the price, this harness is excellent and I can see myself using it for a very long time.

The Momentum Keeps You Going

This harness is solid as a rock. Easy adjustments, the legs will self adjust essentially because of the elasticity and the waist is essentially a "set-it-and-forget-it" system. I read that it was difficult to get on and off, it's not, at least not any more so than any other harness and why would you want a harness that will come off easily anyway? The back is a little thick which can get pretty hot when the sun's baking down on you. That's the case with mesh though too, ultimately I'd prefer the comfort of the thicker padding rather than unsupportive yet "cooling" mesh. Black Diamond is an awesome company with a great reputation and this harness lives up to their standards.

Great working product

I love the fit of this harness, it is extremely comfortable. Even with me being a small framed person the harness fits me perfectly and I can't seem to feel any "hot spots" when wearing the harness. The harness does get pretty dirty fast, or rather shoes the dirt quickly. I like the quick adjustments on it that make it extremely easy to put on and take the harness off, although with how good this thing fits it is I can wear it almost all day without becoming to uncomfortable.
Nathan at Moosejaw on 01/14/2013

Excellent Harness

I cannot be more satisfied with this harness. At the price point it is a great value. I have a size 30-31 waist and ended up buying a medium which fits well, and has sufficient room in the event my waist expands over time.

The harness is very easy to use and very comfortable. The leg adjustment straps are simple to use and hold tight without issue.

The padding is sufficient and not uncomfortable to hang in - and is also breathable.

Glorious!

I work at the rock wall on campus at the college i attend and untill i got this jem in the mail have dealt with used old sketchy harnessses and seatbelt strap sh** harnesses. First of, comfortability is awsome. You legs dont go numb when your hanging working on a route. and the gear loops are sweet. overall awsome harness, not too fancy but gets everything done that i need. PROPS to moosejaw! shipping was supposed to take 8-14 days, it came in 4.
Erik at Moosejaw on 10/28/2011

lightweight and comfortable

My first own harness that I now tried out. Seems lightweigt and though it didn't have much padding yet comfortable. Have mainly used awful rented harnesses before so putting on a nice brand new one was all good. This seems to be one of the cheaper ones but really didn't see a reason for me to go more expensive. Easy to put on and liked the adjustable legloops, real quick fitting on them. looking forward with lots of climbing in this one.
Niclas at Moosejaw on 11/10/2012

Best for the price

Best harness for the price. I was skeptical of the non-double backing waist belt, but I find that i completely trust it and find it much faster and easier than a harness that doubles back. The added advantages of other more expensive harnesses seem to be very minor selling points. The only exception may be the chaos if you are looking to get into the elite level of harness. Just try the harness on and you will (or will not) be sold.
Burk at Moosejaw on 06/16/2012

Good Inexpensive Harness

I used this harness today climbing outside for my first time. I am new to climbing and therefore don't have much to compare this harness to but I can say without question that it is much more comfortable and lightweight than whatever the gym was renting when I went. Since I'm new, I spent plenty of time falling on it and hanging in it trying to figure out the routes. Very pleased with this purchase and it's very inexpensive.

Negative Reviews:

Plastic leg buckle broke first day

I spent a lot of time looking for a harness and this one fit me best. However, it doesn't seem like Black Diamond tested the new leg buckle system that they came up with this year and implemented on the majority of their harnesses. The plastic buckle that adjusts the width of the leg loop broke on my very first top rope fall in the gym. It's not a load bearing piece, but if it breaks, then you can no longer adjust the width of the leg loop to your leg. Totally useless. I returned it.

Cheap Starter Harness. not comfortable

I used to have the BD older model, the Momentum AL harness which was a bit bulky but it was definitely comfortable. I purchased the Momentum SA harness when my gear was unfortunately stolen. It was a bit uncomfortable when I first tried in on and hanging on it. I thought that I just had to break it in a little. A little over a year later and I'm still "breaking in" the harness.

I mainly used this harness for single pitch sport routes, and if you are going to use it for that then you will have no problems. I'm in the process of learning proper multi-pitch techniques and anchor building (I eventually will learn to use pro for trad). The pain started when on a hanging belay. This harness is NOT COMFORTABLE ON A HANGING BELAY or just hanging in the harness in general. The waist belt felt as if it were cutting into my sides trying to split me in two. The legs loops were also digging in and was cutting circulation off. I was miserable and it was just a two pitch climb! Black Diamond's older AL model is a significantly much more comfortable harness. If I were to buy a budget harness, I would buy the Momentum AL or another brand of harness.

This harness is best used for sport climbing where you will not be hanging in your harness for extended periods of time. The speed adjust system for your legs is really convenient especially if your letting other people use your harness.

I ended up returning this back to REI and I actually purchased an Arc'teryx R320a harness...."omg" is all i will say. that will be on another review
Brian Climb Stuff at REI on 03/03/2013

Good, but not for me.

I really like all of my other BD gear (and I have quite a bit). But this harness was just not for me. First, it was way too big. I am about a 32 inch waist and the medium felt way too big. Once I got it synched down it was pretty much as tight as it could go and was way to the side. Second, I found that hanging in the harness for any more than a minute became really uncomfortable.

I went to REI and tried on the Petzl and it fit me much better, and I ended up returning this harness for that one.

Overall this didn't seem like a bad product, but if you have a smaller waist for your size, this will probably not work for you. I would, however, suggest this to those with a different body type.
Legendary H at REI on 03/03/2013

Good for single pitch, not great for hanging belays

I use this harness for sport climbing a ton, and it does a great job with that. Comfy, easy to get on/off (the SA buckle is worth it). On the other hand, this is not a very good harness to hang in for any extended period of time. It's not *un*comfortable, but there are definitely better harnesses out there for you if you're going to be doing a lot of multi-pitch climbing. Then again, if you're going to be doing a lot of multi-pitch, you probably already know this. The detailing in the back tends to get kind of scuffed, but that's really only an aesthetic concern. All in all, a good all-around harness.
Quinn at Moosejaw on 11/30/2011

Ah well its alright

This harness was rather inexpensive, which is good and bad. Because you get what you pay for. The leg loops are really hard to adjust. The waist belt only adjust on one side so if its too big or too small it will trow the leg loops and gear racks and everything else off center which doesn't really effect much other than how it looks. It is also hard to get on and off, the waist belt has an auto double backer which is nice but it doesn't slide easy so its hard to get on and off.
Jamey the Climber at REI on 11/11/2011

Not strong

Hi. I'm a 15 year old climber.

Using this harness has not been pleasant. I have been climbing for about 3 years now. My third fall on this harness wasn't pleasant, most falls aren't. But I have had harness's that hold when I fall. This harness isn't the best for first time climbers.
Skylimit at REI on 03/03/2012

good not great

great first harness due to the price, but if you start climbing alot you will soon want to upgrade. NOT FOR MULTI-PITCH! very uncomfortable on hanging belays. great for indoor or sport climbing.
