No more buying batteries

I was surprised to see the negative comments on the battery kit. I've owned the kit along with the Icon for about 1 1/2 years now and use it multiple times per week. I own two other headlamps and they haven't gotten any use since I've been able to use the rechargable Icon. The charge seems to last a good amount of time, even when the headlamp is used on high. I couldn't compare the light output with the rechargeable batteries compared to regular batteries (I only use the rechargeables), but the light output has been more than enough to hike along trails and even bushwack on occassion. Obviously, "your mileage may vary" but the rechargeable battery kit and the Icon is hands down one of my favorite bits of gear.

I screwed up. Not paying attention again (ADHD) and I bought the wrong charger for the Orbit. I needed the NRG2, not the NRG. The NRG is for the Apollo, the NRG2 is for the Orbit.
Rather than sending this little charger back, I decided to purchase an Apollo since I really liked the Orbit and thought, bigger may be more impressive. I was right, the Apollo rules! Orbit is pretty cool too! For light trips I take the Orbit, for car-camping or where I'm not worried about the weight, the Apollo is really nice to have.
Anyway, learn from my mistakes Orbit = NRG2 charger!
Thanks!

For the price you can buy an awful lot of batteries for it. It is rather nice to have the ability to just plug it in the night before and be ready to go with out having to keep a stock of AA's around. It's pretty much a personal call, but I'm glad I went ahead and purchased it. We'll have to see in the long haul how much it comes out ahead.

Don't let the idiots below scare you... This is VERY EASY to use with the Apollo lantern. Open battery compartment on bottom... insert battery. PLUG IN ... SIMPLE! I used my Apollo lantern every night during a recent 4 night trip. All on a single charge. Pays for itself after a few uses... AA's get very expensive

I am amazed at the longevity of a full charge. No other batteries compare. I have used this for 3 weeks, naybe 15 hours on the headlamp and the green loght >80% is still on. The price is high, but worth it. Getting stuck in the dark sucks.

Negative Reviews:

Not worth it

This is not really worth it. The estimated hours are much less with this rechargeable battery pack. It says it can get only up to 17 hours of use with the 3-watt on high versus 80 or so hours with 3 AA batts. It is obviously better to use AA batteries if that is the case. It is probably more economical to buy rechargeable AA batteries and charge it separately in a charger. Basically this thing is 3 AA batteries taped together with a cord built in

This is only good for maybe a 2 day trip. After that, you would need to carry spare batteries. Not a bad deal if you don't want to hassle with taking batteries in and out every time it dies to recharge since you can just plug the adapter into the side of the battery pack without opening it up.

It says it is valid for 2000 uses. From what I know, NimH batteries should only be charged after completely being discharged, however, the packaged instructions say it is ok to recharge without discharging the batt all the way like a LiOn battery...hmmm

HOWEVER, I MUST SAY THE ICON HEADLAMP IS THE BEST ON THE MARKET, BETTER THAN THE PT APEX AND PETZL

not worth it

Bought this a while back for my BD Icon Headlamp (which is fantastic, by the way). First time I used it, I had left it to charge for approximately two days, so it was fully charged. When I turned on the headlamp, it produced an extraordinarily weak beam. It put out less light than my Petzl Tikka Plus, and certainly did not do justice to a 3-watt lamp. Luckily, I was only using it to move some things into my house in the dark, and not out in the woods relying on this as my only light source. Yes, it's eco-friendly, but who cares if it doesn't work well.

I just bought this and couldn't find out how to hook the batteries up to recharge them. It says in the directions to pull back rubber piece and insert the charger into the batteries but there was no place to insert it. Also I have found that it is for the headlamp and Apollo latern but can't seem to get anyone to confim it. Gave it a 1 star cause I couldnt figure out how to hook it up and the direction sucked. I am sure it would be great if I could figure out how to hook it up.

Two Stars - for this reason. I work with a crew who spends almost all day inside big pipelines doing work. Every one of them wears a Black Diamond Icon because you can get this rechargeable kit for it, and it'll last all day. Unfortunately, I thought I'd be really cool & buy the new model of Icon. The new model takes four AA batteries, and it doesn't appear this rechargeable battery kit will work. If you buy this kit for your Icon, make sure it's a 3-battery model.

Waste Of Money

I purchased this with the apollo lantern (which is a great lantern), but the battery doesn't hold a charge for very long when fully charged and it takes for ever for it to recharge. My advice-save the money and don't purchase this.
