Black Diamond Oval Carabiner.
The Black Diamond Oval Carabiner is a tool you can depend on during any climb. With an open gate strength of 6 kN and a closed gate strength, thrice as much, this carabiner is built for greater durability. Its symmetrical design helps maintain the balance, when the line is taut, while the uniform shape of the carabiner prevents a shifting of the line, when its loaded. A wide 0.71 in. gate opening means that you don't have to be good with a noose, to get the safety rope through it. It could, however,, save your life as it accounts for, in the margin of error. So when you want to take on that big wall and conquer it, be sure to have the Black Diamond Oval Carabiner in your climbing rack!

Big wall vets swear by Ovals since their smooth, uniform shape reduces carabiner "shift" when easing onto sketchy placements. Even if you're not gearing up for the Captain, your rack should include some Ovals because they are great for racking gear, clipping funky old bolt hangers or rigging anchors.

Great Carabiner

These are simple biners great for building anchors for top rope/ Lead/ or rapping.
I have also had other uses for them; racking, belay stations, etc....

They're NOT FOR CHALK BAGS or HANGING YOUR SHOES.
(read other reviewer)

They were designed without lockers for a reason. To dock them a star cus they dont lock is like docking a star on a d-shape biner for not being oval or a static rope for not stretching, etc, etc.

BTW, they are oval so as to ensure a load is properly set along the spine and they is no shift in weight which can happen when creating anchors with D-shape biners.

Simple is best

I bought a few of these guys for "clip and leave" purposes. They are strong and not to expensive. Plus I have seen some of the gear left by climbers and if I have any choice at all, I will not run my ropes through other peoples gear...too much at stake for me to trust someone elses gear that they left behind. These guys are smooth, round, and wide. Perfect, in my opinion, for a rope to run through. And if for some reason you can't make it up to collect them, they are not too expensive to leave behind. Simple and Great!

Bomber

Bomber biner, a little on the heavy side but well worth the extra weight. Cheap enough to use as lowering gear, and a very versatile piece. I like using mine for little finicky stuff where I don't rely on a non-locker for life or death but would trust this biner to take falls. Gates are smooth as butter.

Very Versatile 'Biner

Oval 'biners are really great for just about anything. I mainly use them for the tensioning system on my slackline but you can pretty much use them for anything. They also work really well for setting up pulley systems with Petzl's Ultralegere pulleys. Also, they are less expensive than Omega Pacific's oval 'biner but they're not as strong.

These oavals can't get any more basic. When I'm setting up a top rope or belay anchor I don't need to be messing around with useless features so I pick the BD oaval. It racks well, is durable, and classic. What more could you ask?

Great carabiner for a budget-minded slac

These came recommended to me as locking biners weren't necessary (and are cumbersome in my application). I'm thoroughly happy with my purchase. They're perfect for someone wanting to build a primitive slackline, as well as tons of other uses already covered here.
coreyklee at REI on 10/10/2013

These are great for starting out top roping, quickly increasing your trad rack, or if you can afford it to use as a bail biner. I like to keep a few of them around incase I get turned away from a route.

Good Biner

Solid biner for achor building or for use on slacklines. A little on the heavy side to fill your rack out with. I usually have two of these on me for various uses. Can't beat the price.
SVMoto at REI on 04/04/2013

Simple product. Trusted brand. When you get to the top of the route and theres just a chain or the carabiner up there is rusted shut. Take this oval of your belt and your good to go.

Fits Petzl Pulleys

I bought this caribiner because it was the only one I could find at REI which could be used with the Petzl Ultralegere Pulley. It has functioned well with this very lightweight pulley.

Neutral Reviews:

ok, versatile

I've used and trusted these for years. However, the almost identical Omega oval is slightly stronger and currently only 5cents more so I'd choose it over the BD. Ovals have the additional useful feature in that you can put four of them together and make yourself a "biner-brake" in the occasion you loose your rap device up on the wall. My buddies tease me for using such archiac 'biners, chiding me to replace my ovals with stonger and lighter weight designs. Slowly I'm doing this but I'll continue to carry at least 4 on my rack.

good for accesssories...

I have a few of these as a part of my climbing gear. They serve well to hold accessories (shoes, chalk bags, etc.), but since they are not locking, there abilities are limited. Better bet is to use screwgate carabiners, which are a bit more expensive, but much more versitle

Good Utility Biner

great for attaching gear to the harness, but as your rack grows the weight begins to add up considerably.
