The ultimate blend of light weight and load-carrying ability in a technical alpine pack, the Black Diamond Quantum 65 Pack comfortably hauls heavy loads in the high peaks using our fully modular V-Flex suspension system that conforms to your back. Cushy 15 mm foam is used in the ergonomically-curved shoulder straps and 14 mm in the waistbelt with additional, stiffer foam added on pressure points for weight distribution. It’s built with ultralight, durable and water-shedding VX 21 Dimension Polyant laminated fabric and lined with lightweight 30d SilNylon. For summit pushes, alpinists can minimize the Quantum by removing the V-Flex suspension, top lid, waistbelt and crampon straps. Additional lightweight, webbing waistbelt included.
Making the leap between backpacking functionality and no-frills climbing with the Quantum pack from Black Diamond. Using a dual-density support system, modular V-flex suspension, and quick access panels, this pack offers as many options as you can imagine. Specifications based on size Large/ Extra Large.
Black Diamond blends lightweight and load-carrying ability in the Quantum 65 Pack. This technical alpine pack offers you plenty of storage space for gear and food, but also strips down to an ultralight version for that final summit push. The fully modular V-Flex suspension, top lid, padded waistbelt, and crampon straps all come off to lighten your load. Black Diamond includes a lightweight webbing waistbelt you can switch out with the standard padded belt. Durable laminated fabric sheds water and resists rips, and the suspension system conforms to your back.

"This pack will do anything you can"

| This is pack is super functional. The main thing to consider with this pack is your wasit size. I am a size 32 waist and a 20inch torso. The hipbelt is cut short and just makes it around my hips. So anyone who is considering this pack make sure you have a size 32 wasit or smaller. My 20inch torso puts me in both the medium and large frames. I found the large frame to be the best fit and yet small enough that some one with a shorter torso would also properly fit into a large. Dont let my mild criticizms scare you. It carries weight very well and has a tramendous ability to compress, so smaller trips are no big deal. There are plenty of atachment points on the pack as well, so dont worry about | |

Features Galore | |

| A lot of features for the money make this a very adaptable pack. The plastic backboard isn't as rigid as packs with metal ones but is pretty comfortable. Niceley padded suspension. I use it for carrying my rope and camping gear in the summer and ice/mountaineering gear in the winter. Probably not big enough for a long duration trip (unless you pack very light) but it's a nice middle ground between a day pack and a huge trail pack. Stripping the pack down to bare essentials is possible but not especially practical. Just use it as it is, it's not very heavy. | |

Heavy loads | |
| Rating: | ![]() |
Very light and versatile pack for alpine outings. Did some hauling of 50lb to 70lb loads and it did really well. Pretty amazing to get that out of a 4lb pack. It sat out in the rain/snow and kept all my shit dry. I did put a hole in it with an ice pick and could see some of the seams loosen from the heavy loads. Overall I'm really happy with the comfort, fit, and ability of this pack. We'll see about the long term life as it gets more abuse.

| Backpacker magazine is 100% on this baby! IT ROCKS, I liked it so much I had to pick up the Hollowpoint, which similarly leaves the competition in the dust! Black Diamond will be securely stowing TONS of my backpacking, camping, whitewater kayaking, surfing, snowboarding and YES, technical climbing gear anywhere I choose to take it for many moons to come. Best for Climbing in 2008 also, I imagine! | |

| I didn't end up keeping this pack because it didn't fit, but it was great. The shoulders are well padded and it weight next to nothing. You can take off all the extra's to strip it down and make it wieghtless. I would have kept it but it's one size too big and they only have that size available for now, BD make it one size lower! | |

Great design, terrible material

I agree with the other reviewer--this pack is extremely well designed for alpine climbing, but the fabric is much to flimsy for serious trips. I ordered this back for climbing and skiing this spring and summer, and took it out for the first time for a three day backcountry ski trip last weekend. Since I was staying at a lodge, the pack wasn't super heavily loaded--probably around 40lbs, but I could see strain on material around the seams near the bottom of the pack. There's no way the fabric near the sewing was going to hold up under heavier loads and repeated use. Also, in the course of three days, I managed to put two small tears in the pack bag--not from ice axes or crampons (didn't bring 'em), or from ski edges (wrong location), but just abrasion on rocks and trees. If you tried to haul this pack I imagine it would be in tatters almost immediately. I hope BD will remake the pack with a better fabric, because the size, fit, weight, and features make it perfect for alpine climbing.

Good features... weak pack

I took this pack on a week long trip to the Gannet Peak area in western wyoming. The shoulder straps were comfortable and when paired with the minimal waist belt it carried 30-40 pounds like a dream. BUT it fell apart. Abrasion from rock tore the sides, tree branches punctured it, and the ice axe velcro tore! Later after a rap and gear lower the bag looked like it had been through years of abuse but it was only a week old! The buckles froze and became fragile and 3 broke. The crampon strap system is pointless. Black Diamond customer service told me "thats the nature of the material" Shenanigans!

Poor craftsmanship & material

| I am an experienced alpinist, rock and ice climber, and lightweight backpacker. This pack is light and carries very well, but the sewing and material quality are really bad. I am now on my second quantum pack. Sent the 1st in for repair after only one use (bottom blew out). Now, my replacement is also trashed after two times out. I cannot recommend this pack until the manufacturer improves their quality control. Get it together BD! | |
