Berg's Ski Shop
A do-anything, compact headlamp that offers incredible power. With 60 lumens on max setting, the Black Diamond Spot has ample power for nocturnal route finding on skis, rock or the trail. Really nice lamp for so many uses and yes you truly can ski with this thing at night...ok can't say that you should go flying down a slope at 30+ mph but a nice tour or slow turns it works very well. It really is nice to have options on how much light you need as I know I always feel bad if I want to read in the tent at night and I don't want to keep everyone else up with a super bright light...just a little extra click and boom (more of a woosh) and the lights go down. Keeping it simple is always nice and BD knows a few things about that!
Al's Sports
Optimizing a blend of focused and peripheral light, the streamlined Spot Headlamp from Black Diamond produces an amazing amount of light for a lamp that fits in your pocket. Housed in a reflector, the one-watt HyperBright LED throws a far-reaching beam. When all you need is close-range light, switch modes and use the three SuperBright LEDs which emit usable light for over 100 hours. A single switch on top lets you choose from four lighting levels for both modesùmin, mid, max and strobeùto tailor the light output to your needs. The batteries-up-front design works great for reading when you're tent-bound waiting for a weather window.

Super lamp

I actually don't remember if my BD is this model, but my lamp looks exactly like the Spot model on the BD website.

I bought this for camping and to replace a Petzl Tikka which has no tilt function, important now that I'm an old fogey & read through the bottom of my eyeglass lenses.

I like the bright wide spot for clam digging, for which I discovered this lamp was more than adequate long after I had bought it. It's wide enough that I can leave the Coleman white gas lantern in the trunk, so I don't have to worry about rogue waves toppling it---its concentrated brightness diameter measures about 20 inches on the floor about 20-30 inches in front of me. I can dim both the spot and the flood modes. The flood mode isn't bright enough to clam dig with, but has value for walking about. Accessing the flashing modes in either white or red requires a conscious double press of the power button immediately after powering on red or white. Changing from red to white or back requires that I turn off the light and hold down the power button for 1.5 seconds. Once I have it on red, it doesn't reset to white until I hold down the power button again. The red doesn't dim--it's pretty dim already and not suitable for clam digging. One button does it all--you can remember after you've used it awhile.

Brilliant!

Just picked this up and I love it. It's a great improvement over the last BD Spot I had. Whereas with that one you never knew which mode it turned on in without directly looking at it (a pain if it was on your head already), this one turns on in the mode you want based on how many pushes you give the button.

As for the reveiwer that complained it turned on in his pack, there is a lock feature which prevents this. If you're still concerned about this happening, get the Petzl Tikka 2 headlamp pouch--not only will it ensure the headlamp doesn't turn on accidently, it will protect it from getting scratched.

As for "MacGyver" who couldn't figure out how to open the battery cover, the new Spot is far easier to open than the older version with its fiddly tab you had to push. On the bottom of the new version, simply pull up on the body-colored (the lamp's, not yours) tab near the hinge and off it comes. Couldn't be simpler.

Great headlamp. Looking forward to many nights out cross-country skiing with it.

Give your old one to a homeless guy

I have been fairly quiet about reviews until I tried out my new Black Diamond Spot headlamp last week. My old headlamp is also a Black Diamond, but it is at least 4 years old. Oh, my what enormous improvements they have made. With only 3 AAA batteries the thing gives off 90 lumens and blasts a light for over 200 feet. They claim that the batteries will last for 250 hours. There are two major settings, spot and wide angle, but if you hold the button it will dim to whatever brightness you desire. Perfect for the long trip where you want the control over battery life. On our recent run, no one wanted to go in front of me because I was casting such a bright light. At a little over 30 bucks, it is worth tossing your old lamp to the Teen Challenge or some homeless guy left in the dark.
Randy Whorton at Rock/Creek Outfitters on 12/12/2011

Bright and long-lasting

I've now used this headlamp on two overnight trips (each one for one night) fairly heavily, and all on one set of batteries. On the second trip I arrived at my camp site when it was already dark due to a little snag I had and had to set up my tent at that time... easy job with the Black Diamond Spot. One of my favorite things about it is the ability to dim the light when necessary. In terms of weight, I should first say that this is my first headlamp because prior to these two trips I only did day hikes, but I hardly noticed the weight. I also think this headlamp was very well priced considering all of the features, the weight, and overall quality. I'm really happy with my purchase and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a great headlamp.

One of the best purchases i have made

i bought this primarily for entering the woods for whitetail hunting before the morning starts however i have used this headlamp for so much more than i imagined i would!!! Works great for packing up in the dark when ice fishing/camping. Works great around the campfire. The other day my friend got stuck in a snow bank and called me for help. Had my head lamp and i was able to use that to help dig us out. Its super bright! Brightest one i have found. The features are great. The red is a little dimmer than i would have liked but its still great. buy it

good good...

A well rounded head lamp that is ideal for midnight treks, late night- reading, or if you so choose blinding and disorienting all or any that dare enter you line of site.

Yes, this is quite a bright headlamp; sum might say its to bright, I might say it is just right. (Witch it is…just right). Good for the job, and it gets it dun, I promise you will have lots of fun. Yes yes good good buy it now.

But don't trust me, pretty shore this wisent help full. have fun figuring out if this HL is the one for you.

Good lamp - nice options.

I had the Spot for a long time and I've enjoyed this unit quite a bit (camping, running, hiking). I really like the dual beam for different conditions. The bright spotlight is wonderful for illumination and the low level LEDs are excellent when lower light or longer battery is needed. I used it a lot for running roads. I'd turn the light around and flip on the red light when cars where at my back. Unfortunately, the angle adjuster broke on mine (but I think my kids got to it). So, I can't give it 5 stars due to not being "kid proof."
PacNWJeff at REI on 10/10/2013

Excellent product

Took this on a 3 day trip backcountry hiking in West Virginia. This light is extremely bright and I used it on a dim setting for most of the time at the camp ground. It is very nice that you have the option of dimming it to exactly the level that suits you. You can also easily switch to red lighting which can be useful inside a tent at night. Can't speak about waterproofness or battery life yet, but out of all the headlamps I have had so far, this is by far the best one.
TheTravelingOrange at REI on 12/12/2013

Great, bright light with red lights

This headlamp is kept either in my camping backpack top pocket or my photography backpack top pocket. Even though I "locked" the headlamp so it would not accidently turn on, I have found it "on" twice in my pack. That caused the batteries to run down quickly. My other 2 headlamps do not have a lock feature but they have never accidently turned on. Otherwise it is the best of my headlamps- brighter and has the red lights which I use for night photography.
Thumper at REI on 11/11/2013

Perfect for 10 day trek.

Wanted a light that was not too heavy but still plenty bright, this one is perfect. Lasted 10 days at Philmont and the light only became noticeably dimmer on day 10. One set of Lithium batteries lasted the whole trek and I wasn't trying to conserve the battery. I like the lockout feature and the fact that is has two beams, the full light and the "up close" light. Would be a great gift for a Scout or backpacker.

Negative Reviews:

Would be Great.... Except

This was a replacement for my old Spot headlamp. At first I was excited about the new features and added red light, which are nice. However, for some ridiculous reason Black Diamond changed the on / off button to now cycle between the bright LED/low LED every time the light is turned off and on. For most uses I am constantly turning the light off and on and cycling through the setting every time is so annoying. It doesn't sound like a big deal but after a while it is a complete waste of time/energy/and night vision. This is a HORRIBLE design, especially since it was a change from the previous model. I found myself resorting to my old Spot headlamp instead of this new one. I've used Black Diamond headlamps since they came out and this is probably my fifth light (various models). I gave away the new light and when my old Spot is done, I am searching for a new brand. This is just too annoying. Used to be a great light! So disappointed and so avoidable. Note: I also updated my Black Diamond Icon model Headlamp at the same time and it has the same "new" on/off settings. Love BD products, but I am done until they re-work the on/off settings.

Lamp Turns On While In Pack - Bad Design

This lamp did everything it was supposed to do except stay turned off while in my pack. On a recent climbing trip the lamp somehow turned on in my pack several times and burned the battery up. I suspect this is a design failure due to an oversized on/off button that is very easy to push. I had the old Spot for 3 years and never once had this issue. My advice is to stay away from all models with this button design including this one.
