Positive Reviews:

Not quite tough enough for me

I use this light daily and extensively. I love the fast-charging built-in battery, though I never take it far from a charging source, so I've never drained the battery to a dim output. I use it to get around a museum-owned WWII Victory Ship at night, and I use it when repairing crawlspace plumbing. I use it to light the ship's shower compartment, but it doesn't get wet so I can't comment on it's waterproof claim.

In two years, I'm on my fifth Sprinter headlamp because the light switch keeps wearing out. First it gets balky, then very reluctant to work, and then it quits. So I get about 3 months of daily usage and then have to get another. I keep hoping they will use a more durable switch, but not yet. REI has graciously replaced one or two headlamps for me, but they now say one replacement is my limit.

This switch failure seems par for many of the headlamp brands and models that I've bought over the years and used extensively, so I can't fault this one for being overly delicate. I'm just hard on headlamps, and this one I don't put in a drawer to be used now and again. I'm addicted to that rechargeable battery (and I always buy them with an REI discount).

optimal design for a headlamp

Finding a headlamp with the right balance of output, battery life, and fit is difficult. The sprinter meets my requirements with good marks, and is a good compromise of all features.

For running, it is bright enough to light the trail several steps in front of me. The flashing modes (front and rear) are also good features to keep you visible.

So far, the battery lasts up to 6 hours so it is good for the daily workout. Overnight runs will not work well unless you had several on hand. As can be expected, the brightness drops off quickly near the end of charge.

It is always a tradeoff between the internal rechargeable battery and disposables. But in this case, the compromise works for me.

The USB charger is also convenient. At least I don't need to buy or lug around a special charger.

It is lightweight enough that I don't even notice it while running. The head straps are snug and keep it from bouncing. Because it sits directly on my skull, I have not been able to use it with a helmet.

This product is amazing! I live in a rural area, so safety is very important, the only road to run on around here is a state HWY. The light is so bright you can be seen by drivers by up to 1/2 mile away! I know this because just yesterday I was stopped by a driver who wanted to tell me how awesome my light was and that he appreciated me making myself visible. He saw me from a 1/2 mile away WITH the sun to to MY back. The red light on the back ensures you're visible from all sides, and the battery pack ensures you won't go dark in the middle of a run. In fact I've had this light on for almost 2 straight days before it died! (I was trying to kill the battery to recharge it!) It is light and small enough you could also use it camping, hiking, climbing, whatever, and the light on the back would be especially useful for hiking or climbing in low light conditions so you're team could follow you.

Great for running

I use this for early morning runs or late night runs during the non-summer months. It's super light and I love that it's rechargeable, which means no batteries to buy and that also makes it lighter. It stays put while running even without the band that goes over the top of your head. It's a little bit of work to adjust it back and forth between my husband and I but that's minor. I run in the darkness of morning and he goes at night so it's a daily switch.

The huge selling point for me is the fact that it already has a flashing red light in the back. I didn't want to have to remember 10 million things to just go on a run.

really nice headlamp

I have the older version, but they are pretty much the same. I really like this light. I use it for jogging in the early morning or at night. Light is easily and quickly adjustable and bright. I really appreciate the indicator light in the back. I find that those who start their commute at 0500 tend to wake up while on the road.

I love the fact that it's rechargeable. The energy cell is also much lighter than a lamp full of AAA's, but brighter than lights with the expensive little circular batteries). I have a couple other BD headlamps (one LED only and one LED/incandescent) and this is my go-to at this point.

I once was blind, but now I see...

My wife and I recently moved to a rural property. We had difficulty seeing the road, which is filled with potholes, loose rock, and a very uneven surface.

After 1 night run, I purchased this headlight for each of us. Wow! What a difference. This light perfectly "floods" the area in which you need to see. Our night runs have been much safer now that we can see!

The red flash in the rear of the headset is a plus, improving visiblity for vehicles to see us. If you are a runner and need a headlamp, don't consider anything else!

excellent, dependable headlamp

I run at least once a week in the dark, through the woods (on or off trail), up creeks, and through heavy briars. I need a reliable, waterproof and bright headlamp. I purchased several different battery powered models, but every one broke. I have returned them all to REI, but this model. The fact that there is a solid state rechargeable battery makes the headlamp very reliable as well as inexpensive to use. Definitely a great buy for a great product.

Best Running Accessory EVER!

I got this about 2 weeks ago since I live in Michigan and it has been getting dark earlier and I must say it is the best and brightest thing! It is perfect for running and keeping yourself safe. Everyone can see you with the blinking front and back light perfect for dawn or dusk but when its dark the full light headlamp is wonderful! You can see EVERYTHING! This is a MUST PURCHASE item for any city or rural running!

FEEL SAFER FROM DUSK ON

I carry it with me in my backpack. So anytime it starts to get dark I pull it out and put. It on. I always have it with me. I feel much safer with this and my reflector safety vest on. I've gone green. It's buses or walking for me. This way I'm always ready. Come on dark!

I bought this headlamp to use for an overnight running relay in California and it was perfect! It is much brighter than most headlamps and the ability to charge via USB was an incredible pro. It stayed in place while running and was not too heavy. I highly recommend this product!

Negative Reviews:

Liked it while working fine

Some people like this headlamp because it's rechargeable, but for the same reason I dislike it.

I have been using the last year model for about 8 months. BD Sprinter worked fine for about six months. But then now even if it is fully charged overnight, light output is dim and it is calling for new batteries with no use.

When this issue happened, I realized that it was time to change the rechargeable battery, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Neutral Reviews:

Great headlight; suspect durability

Last years model provided an AC batter charger which I use exclusively. But all three of my Sprinter headlamps from last year eventually failed in identical ways, with a cracked head-unit and switch failure. This year's model may have improved durability but it is still too soon to tell, since failure for me typically happens after three months. As a live-aboard ship keeper I use this headlamp after I de-power the ship each evening, so it gets much more usage than even a daily runner would experience. The on/off switch gets used perhaps 30 times a day.
