Black Diamond Ultra Distance Z-Pole Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Worth the price if you're going light.

I found out that light poles can make a difference when I didn't carry a pair on a hike; high step-ups at the end that I thought would be harder without poles were actually easier - because I hadn't been tiring myself out with poles for the past 11 miles, and had more juice left. (Poles are an upper-body workout.)

That's when I knew I was getting these (the bennies outweigh the above disadvantage). A few ounces mean a lot. These are so light I just tote them in my hands for stretches I'm not using them. They're the only poles I'll use for trail runs, because they're the only ones light enough. If you don't use poles for trail runs, a few strides with these serve as your introuction, and from then on, you're using them, period.

You'll see scratches on the shaft if you hike anywhere with rocks and such. Can't say what that means for long-term durability, but so far it seems not to worry about. The more superficial ones almost seem to self-heal. Take the pole bag with you; it's a handy way to store them should you decide to. The speed cones not only make for quick deployment and breakdown but also for a pole that doesn't unexpectedly collapse on you when you plant it. I thought the choke-up extensions on the handle looked too small to be useful. (I choke up a lot.) No worries; they work fine.

If you are lightening up your hiking kit, don't neglect the poles; these are as light as they get, and so far, exceed the performance of any others I've used. Ounces do count; and cutting them here makes a noticeable difference.

Unbelievably light

I just completed the John Muir Trail using these trekking poles. I loved them.

They are unbelievably light, yet strong and comfortable. My companions joked that you had to hold them down or they would float away. When I hefted their poles I couldn't believe how heavy they were in comparison. Lifting trekking poles one after another as you hike has a cumulative effect; the lighter the pole the better. I don't think you can do any better than these.

I wore out the plastic tips after about 150 miles and switched to the graphite tips. They still looked new after the remaining 70 miles of the hike.

My only complaint was that the hand strap was barely large enough for my hand to fit through, with the velcro extended as far as it would go. Once I squeezed my hand through, the strap was comfortable and gave good support.
Daryl Lafferty at REI on 08/08/2013

great until it breaks

I have another pair of Black Diamond poles, which work great, but took this on my fastpacking John Muir Trail hike this summer. I wasn't particularly moving fast, but while crossing large boulders over a stream, slipped, fell and without putting much of my skinny 120 pounds on one of the poles, it snapped near the handle. (I run 100 mile trail races over often technical terrain without poles several times a year and would not call myself a klutz.) There were many miles and passes to go. Duct tape from someone coming the opposite direction helped keep it together, but the locking mechanism was also ruined so it would fold often. So while these work great, they aren't very durable. The REI return policy rocks, but I felt so guilty. I am not buying these again; am going for something a little heavier but stronger.
Trail Ultrarunner at REI on 08/08/2013

Stronger than I expected

Even though these things are extremely light, I haven't shied away from putting a lot of weight on them and they have held up very well.

If you have ever seen that old Charleston Heston film "the Ten Commandments" where God turns his walking stick into a snake to show his power and then Charleston grabs the snake by the tail and it immediately snaps back into a walking stick into his hands, the mechanism that snaps these things together feels exactly like that. It's kinda magical and it makes me just a little bit happy every time I do it.

My only complaint is that the foam handles are blackand when you use them and sweat into them, a bunch of black junk rubs off onto your hands. It's kinda annoying, that's all.
Shveddy at REI on 05/05/2013

Awesome poles

Got these to upgrade an old 'BD Trail' pair of poles. These are crazy lightweight which I never complained about with my older poles but instantly noticed how much lighter my hands were on the trail using these. They are stiffer than my heavier poles which I was worried about. I know carbon fiber has excellent strength for its weight but I was very timid at first thinking that these were still just too light to be structurally sound. I still have worries that even though they are sturdy on the trail that they will not last as long as my heavier ones but I will speak to that durability when I have a better idea of it. So far they are just great though.
Mattt at REI on 01/01/2013

Light and useful

My wife and I used these poles for several easy 14er routes and miscellaneous hikes in the Colorado Rockies this year. Very easy to assemble, super light, yet strong enough to provide meaningful third balance point. They collapse down to a short package easy to strap packside when not being used. Only ding is that the tiny string connecting the adjustable wrist strap to the pole head broke after about 12 miles use. Replace it with a short loop of small diameter accessory cord. I'd use burlier poles, a few ounces heavier, like MSRs, for snowshoeing.
Cutbackcoach at REI on 11/11/2012

Lightweight and durable

These poles are amazing. I used them on several trips covering at least 30 miles of mountains and some river beds. These poles are suprisingly durable for how lightweight they are. I weigh 170 lbs and usually have a 50 lbs pack. A few times I would be walking and lose my footing and these poles kept me from busting my bum. For only being 10 oz and supporting that much weight, good job black diamond! For anyone going into the mountains where weight is a concern these poles are worth their weight in gold!
IndyNak at REI on 07/07/2013

Fantastic Poles!

I broke these poles in on an overnighter, 18 mile loop in Harriman State Park in NY.

I re-rolled my bad ankle 8 miles in and these poles were nothing short of a life saver. I put them through hell and they essentially carried half my weight the remaining 12 miles back to town.

My only complaint is that the hand straps have shown significant wear and tear for only two days of use.

Otherwise, they are just fantastic!
Thomas Parrinello at REI on 07/07/2013

Amazingly lightweight and strong

I used these on a 30 mile trek across the White Mountains in New Hampshire after a very rainy week, and they were invaluable on the muddy, slippery trails. They are super lightweight, easy to deploy, and very sturdy. You'll be surprised at how much load (body + backpack) they'll shrug right off, given how flimsy they APPEAR to be. The carbon fiber composite also has just enough give to provide shock absorption.
arosca at REI on 07/07/2013

Need to use them more

Wonderfully light weight folding poles. Easy to pack in suitcase or backpack. Only used a few times. Probably not geared to heavy use, or super steep terrain. May be fragile. Interchangeable tips are stored in a little pocket in the carry sleeve. Impossible to twist the tips off with your hands. Need a pliers. Definitely hard to figure out. Need better directions.
gr8mumma at REI on 04/04/2013

Negative Reviews:

Never So Disappointed in Black Diamond

I was very excited about these poles. They are amazingly light and compact. Friends of mine with the same set told me how durable and resilient the poles were. In my last trip to Alaska, I was hiking on a simple stream side path when I lost footing on a lose rock, instead of the minor support I expected from these poles (that I experienced with my other 3 sets), the pole snapped near the handle and I fell into a stream and nearly broke my leg. This was the very first time I used these poles and they completely failed. I doubt I will ever have faith in another Black Diamond set of hiking poles again. Using these poles caused me greater injury than if I had nothing at all.
Traveling4BizNFun at REI on 06/06/2013

Neutral Reviews:

straps too small

My husband bought a pair of these poles while we were hiking in Tucson. They worked well and are lightweight. I worry about the instruction that any damage to the pole may weaken the integrity/structure of the pole. Unless you hike in a rockless area it is difficult to avoid some scratches and scrapes with rocks on the sides of the trail. The most negative thing about the poles is that they apparently come with a standard SM/MED strap, which does not allow you to grasp the handle at a lower position or fit with gloves even at the fully expanded velcro position. A larger strap is not available through REI so I was advised to contact Black Diamond. In doing so the BD Customer Service Representative informed me I could buy 2 new straps at $15 each. This added $30 to an already expensive pole. I had to return them to REI because I did not feel they were worth the value.
