Not Just For Kids

What started as a gift for our 2 yr. old has become a family favorite. It stays put, is very comfortable, and puts out nice light for such a little lamp. The older members of our family have more powerful lamps, but we end up using this one all the time because it's so small and slips easily into a pocket. It's also perfect for reading because it's very light and comfortable for extended use. We live and camp in the heart of bear country and it's important to have decent light for middle of the night trips to the restroom and this little lamp does great. It does require a mini screwdriver (which anyone who has kids or wears glasses already has) but it's not a downside at all compared to how handy it is!! We actually just ordered a couple of extra so that our 2 yr old can have his back. Great find! Thank you Grandma and Papa!

I bought this kids headlamp for my 7 year old who is going on her first backpacking trip soon. Getting those 2 AAA batteries in this thing was like a crazy puzzle. Because it's marketed for a child who (apparently) is prone to removing the batteries and eating them, I guess? It comes with a tiny screw driver to loosen a tiny screw to open and close the battery compartment. Who's going to take this little screw driver with them everywhere this headlamp goes?! Why didn't they make it a flat head screw so you can use your leatherman tool or maybe a dime to open and close it?! Anyway, the screw was the first thing we removed and threw away. It works fine without it. Otherwise, easy to use the power button. It's just on/ off and the strap adjusts easily too.

Great headlamp

I bought two of these, one for my 5 yr old nephew and another one for my 2 1/2 yr old niece. They love them! I am looking into introducing them both into camping this summer, and these headlamps have gotten them really interested in going... Only downside to these is the tiny little screwdriver that you need to open the battery compartment. As long as you put it in a safe place where you'll remember where it is, it will be fine.

Works great

After reading the comments below, I decided to buy the product for my 2-year-old daughter. She loves it, and the strengths given by the other reviewers hold true. The negative given by the others was the small screw that needs to be undone to change the batteries. Great news: this is NOT a problem. When you put the batteries in for the first time (using the small screw driver provided), just DON'T re-tighten the screw! The battery compartment snaps shut anyway!

Love this little headlamp...

My boys love this headlamp. We have been the proud owners for a few years now...very sturdy. Wonderful bright light, and adjustable for their heads. They love wearing them in bed at night to read. It's also nice that the battery is not one of the button-cell types (expensive to replace), just 2 AAA batteries. And for all those reviews complaining about the small screw...how great that Black Diamond includes a small screw driver!!!!

LOVE LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!!

Pretty darn good

My boyfriend just got this for me as a birthday present as my old one finally gave out on me after several years. So far, seems to be working great. Can't really beat it for the price and Black Diamond is a brand I trust and have had great experience with in the past. Wish it was a little bit brighter, but has been working well for me on my last few trips.
Heather at Moosejaw on 04/07/2012

My little one got one of these for Christmas and she loves it. The fact it comes in pink and her size was a big plus. She has fun playing with it all over the house and when we are camping. It is plenty bright for her needs of navigating in the dark or going on some little adventure.
One pain is changing batteries, is it requires a screw driver.

Joshua Moore at Backcountry.com on 01/22/2011

Great First Headlamp

Bought 2 of these for my girls 5 and 7 for Christmas this year. I agree that having to unscrew the battery cover is a bit much. A pinch cover would have been a nicer feature. But the girls love them and the pink band. Happy to have their own headlamps!
Scottcgauvin at REI on 01/01/2013

Good Headlamp, but...

Got this for my daughter for Christmas; nice bright lamp however changing the batteries is a problem. You need a tiny phillips screw driver. Going to be problematic if the batteries die while away from home. Still not bad for kids.
idahooutdoorsman at REI on 03/03/2013

Great little head lamp

I bought two of these for my kids. They are so easy for them to use. They are bright enough for camp chores and dim enough to read in the tent.

Negative Reviews:

my wife and I have 20 plus years between us leading extensive wilderness trips. We have learned to trust that black diamond makes quality gear. more than once I could say that I owe my continued life to black diamond gear.
We have two young girls so when we saw your headlamp marketed to kids we were sure that it would be a home run. It is, it is simple, bright, light weight and it fits their heads.
The packaging at Christmas was immediately chucked. When attempting to install the battery we were struck hard and fast. screw access to the battery necessitating a very small screwdriver (included)?
1. are we expected to carry the thing in the field? and not lose it into a creek etc
2. Even if we never took the lights in the field are we expected to not lose it.
It seems like a colossal fail in my book. a fail in terms of product testing. Clearly the light was never put into the hands of a parent because even organized parents like us would see that the screwdriver would be lost before the first change in batteries. the screw is so small that even one of those 8 in one screwdrivers or a Swiss army knife would not be able to open it.
Bad design, Black diamond should be ashamed. If I can find the packaging they are going back to the store...
Disappointed in a trusted brand.
We will get over it

tim at Backcountry.com on 12/25/2010

not kid-friendly

I bought this to give as a gift to my niece at summer camp and fortunately took it out of the package beforehand to put in the batteries. Get this: installing/replacing battery requires a special screwdriver, which comes with the package but - as one can imagine - would get lost fast. Can you imagine wrestling with that on a camping trip? this is going back.
Tisa at REI on 08/08/2011

Needs tiny phillips screwdriver

Works fine for my daughter, who isn't old enough to be picky about headlamps. When I went to change the battery, I couldn't open it because it requires a tiny phillips screw driver, which I don't have. What a pain. Will return it and get a real head lamp.

Black Diamond Wiz

I was looking for a cheap, compact headlamp to carry in a pocket for work. It's a basic headlamp for a fair price. I actually didn't notice the little "safety screw" thing until I got it home. Like most people I know, I usually don't carry a mini-phillips screwdriver with me. I am probably going to leave it "unlocked" by not tightening the screw. It will stay together regardless. Special note; the included screwdriver will probably have the tip end in the handle (so pull out and reverse ends). Will keep since returns for me are a hassle. But next time would probably go for the next model up?
KeiththeSurveyor at REI on 11/11/2011

very simple headlamp. I use it as a just in case head lamp in my car glove box. It is bright but only turns on hi on low and off. Super basic.
