The red end of the needle on this compass, like most, is supposed to point North. I just got mine home and took a look at it closely. The red end is pointing South(ish). Should have looked at it closely before I took it to the check stand, but Brunton should have looked at also before they packaged it and shipped it for sale. This makes me distrust Brunton all toghether. They used to be great, but not anymore.
The rotating bezel got stuck

This was an OK compass and I used it for several orienteering and adventure races. The problem is that after about a year of use the rotating bezel got stuck and would not turn any more. I dont know if that was from the heat, or water... but it does not work any more.
Bright & accurate

I've had this compass for about 10 years. Got when I took a survival course in college. Needed an inexpensive compass to learn how to find my way through a desert course. It worked GREAT!!! It has continued to serve me in all my outdoor adventures since. Again, I've had it for 10 years and it works just as well now as it did when I first bought it. I would definitely recomend it to anyone, especially if you're on a tight budget. Works just as well as any [$]or more compass. One final note is the color makes it easy to find, and I made a lanyard to slip through the loop so that I can just hang it around my neck.
My Favorite Compass !!!

This is my favorite compass. I have had quite a few different brands and this Brunton is the best. It is easy to find in a pack due to its bright color, it almost glows! Highly recommended as a compass at any price. This is a bargain due to the low price.
I have installed many satellites and left the compass in my toolbox near magnetic tools and only the Brunton has lasted more than 6 weeks. Others have either lost the way north, dried out, or cracked the plastic. It has survived over 4 years of bouncing around the toolbox and in the backpack doing double duty. The plastic is way scuffed up, but it still works perfectly.
as good as it gets

I've had this compass for eight years, and used it in competitive orienteering(land navigation). It sets quickly and accurately, is light weight and compact, waterproof, as simple as a compass can get, and about as cheap as well, this compass works just as well as compasses 4-5 times it's price (I know, I've used about 20 different ones competitively)
Good to start...

The declination adjustment is a little flimsy on this model, but overall a good compass to start out with, though I would invest in something a little better for a situation where it would be used constantly.
