Non-solar charger

Bought this for an upcoming backpacking trip to keep my phone charged up. Started off charging it from a computer USB port, as recommended. It charged the internal battery in 3-4 hours, then charged my near dead iPhone in about 2.5 hours. The next day I tried leaving it in the sun all day, although it was a mostly cloudy day, so sunlight was limited, although the red light indicating it was charging was on. Tried charging my phone that night and it only raised the battery up 25%. Tried charging a full day outside in better sun the next day, then plugged in my phone - didn't even get a charge at all this time.

Bottom line, charge up the unit from your computer or wall plug and it will work fine, but this is sorely lacking as a solar charger. Can't complain too much, at $60, it's considerably less than other chargers on the market.

Good charger, Poor solar capabilities

Charged this unit via USB. Resulting charge was able to charge my iPhone 4S to 100% from dead.

Charged this unit via the solar panel. Kept it outside for 16 hours in total sun from dawn to dusk. Resulting charge only went up to 43% from dead, before it died.

Charged it sitting on my window sill behind the window for 3 days. Resulting charge was up to 27% before it died.

Bottom line, it will hold a charge to fully recharge your smart phone from dead IF the battery is charge from the USB.

The capability of the solar panel to charge the battery enough to bring a smart phone back from the grave is sorely lacking.

Size wise, it will work as a back up. But as a survival or backcountry tool, I am still looking for something better.
