Byer Moskito Hammock
First off the bat, my very favorite hammock is by far the Hennessy Hyperlight.
However, THIS hammock weighs almost NOTHING! It's less than a pound with the mosquito net built in.
I do question if it could really deal with a 250 pound load, and I believe the weight specs are very conservative with the Hennessy Hammocks. The Hennessy is by far the one if you expect to be using it for more than a week!
I would never expect this flimsy Byer hammock to be the one for extended journeys. I would only trust the Hennessy for that, and the Hennessy is by far a better design, more comfortable, and superior in every way except that it WEIGHS more than this Byer hammock.
BUT, for smaller, minimalist trips, this Byer is the very smallest and lightest, and still has the MANDATORY mosquito net, which is not only needed for bugs, I will never use a non-netted hammock again, as I have suffered a fall from a hammock before, and love the safety option of the mosquito net to keep you from falling out!
In all my years of extremely aggressive snowboarding, I never suffered such injuries as I did falling out of my hammock 1 meter to the ground!
It scares me even the thought of using a non-netted hammock because of that.
ALWAYS use a headlamp or other source of light when getting in and out at night, and be MOST CAUTIOUS. I'm telling you, that sort of accident can be VERY bad!
Overall, yes, I say buy the Hennessy, but this one is much lighter, and a lot cheaper also. The Hennessy is worth the money, but only if you HAVE it!
The fact that this hammock is lighter has huge merits, and it might be your best choice on a minimalist mission that doesn't last for more than a week to 10 days. Also, I would not depend on it in severe weather.
Another thing is that this hammock needs a rain fly, like the ENO hammock rain fly, and could use tree hugger straps to be a complete setup, and by that time, you are already close enough to a complete Hennessy set up that will last you 10 years that you might as well go with that!
It was this hammock that I first used for camping, though, and I have had many trouble free nights in the Byer moskito hammock with an ENO rainfly and a sleeping bag.
Still comfy for two
I bought this hammock specifically to use when I "popped the question" to my wife. That was over three years ago and it has turned out to be one of the things that stays in the car because we use it so much. It's extremely comfortable and easy to set up. Both my wife and I can nap together in it, although that doesn't say much since neither of us weigh all that much. I've even used it when it's colder than what I would consider "hammock weather". Just throw in some blankets and you're golden.
Some of the things to think about though...this is not for backpacking. It's bulky (although it has it's own little storage sack), and weighs quite a bit due to the fact that it's 100% cotton. I've never gotten it wet, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be good for it. Also, when you're hanging it up, make sure you string it up high since the cotton fabric stretches quite a lot over time. I usually hang it at eye level (I'm 6' tall) and after a few hours my wife and I can reach over the side and grab our shoes off the ground.
After a few years this thing is still going strong. Some of stitching is getting worn out, but I don't see any problem with it lasting another couple of years.
I just got back from a deployment in afghanistan, where i was living in a minuscule 7x7 room with utterly no storage space. After about 6 months of sleeping on a mattress so old you could roll it up like a sleeping bag (and this was an inner spring mattress) I sent home for my hammock, and strung it up diagonally across the room. I slept in that hammock for 6 months until we came back stateside, and slept incredibly. it even fixed the back pain the old mattress had given me, within a couple nights.
Excellent, Excellent product. The only reason it gets a one star shot is because, being cotton, you have to be careful about storage or it will mildew. Also, the sun wreaks havoc on the ink. Be prepared for it to fade heavily if you leave it up outside for too long.
Hammock Time is the best time!
I bought this for my wife for our second anniversary. She's always wanted a hammock and esp. so since we just purchased our first house with the perfect set of hammock trees.
I, for some reason, missed out on the fact that it didn't come with the gear I needed to start using it right away so i had to go to a near by outdoors store to buy some slap straps and carabiners to start using.
My wife and i love relaxing in this hammock for reading and taking long summer naps! Great design, extremely comfortable, easily transportable and easy to store. I highly reccomend keeping it in it's bag when not in use because the cotton is not resistant to anything.
Great Hammock for a Relaxing Afternoon
My favorite place to use this hammock is down by my neighborhood pond. I like to find a pair of trees about 12 feet apart such that I can set up the hammock to gently swing in the afternoon breeze. At 5'6" tall and 125lbs, I find that the size of this hammock offers plenty of room to spread out when swinging solo. It remains cozy when sharing the space with my girlfriend (although I must admit that we're both small people and our combined weight is only ~250lbs)! The 100% cotton material is very soft and comfortable with just the right amount of stretch and airiness. It's easy to snooze the afternoon away in this great hammock!
Attractive, strong and comfortable
We set this up in the back yard near the sitting area and also brought it with us camping. It is so easy to set up, and I have never had the kids flip out of it, so the design seems to account for that. It is really comfortable and easy to set up. There are very cheap net type hammocks that are good for backpacker/space conscious needs, this isn't that hammock. And it shouldn't be left out indefinately because the cotton will weather and fade, but this was a good choice for tent camping families.
Best Hammock Ever!
My ex-girlfriend and I used to share this hammock on camping trips and in our backyard. I was skeptical at first, having been used to the old-school white rope hammocks with the wood crossbars, but after a nap in this bad boy, I was hooked. Even with two people, it is immensely comfortable!
Julie took the hammock when we broke up (actually, it was hers anyway), so now I'm getting my own!
May result in extreme sleepiness
This hammock rocks! I have it set up between 2 trees behind my house and it the best spot in the neighborhood! I love the fabric as it is soft and colorful. The other nice thing is it kinda envelopes you in a cocoon-like state since the edges wrap around your body and you have some privacy while you snooze or read a book. Definitely a worthwhile purchase!
Fantastic Hammock, Ex-Wife Loved it!
I got this hammock when I proposed to my ex-wife. She said yes! Suffice to say, this hammock served her better than me... her and her new husband are very happy with the product!
I have seen the hammock hanging in the backyard and it still looks good after 5 years! We bought the Mocha color and it looks absolutely great! Great buy!
Great overall hammock. I plan on taking it everywhere. The cotton is soft but you can also feel the durability and strength in the materials. Great design as well.
