We’ve put together the four most-essential, fly-tying tools in one affordable kit. Built of stainless steel and standard sized, these tools include: a 3.5'' pair of scissors, hackle pliers, bobbin and whip finisher.
These tools are certainly enough to get the job done but I will certainly look to buy nicer ones in the future. The only complaint I have is the whip finisher is not very good, the thread slips off the hook too easily and the tool does not rotate on its own. With practice it can be made to work, but it takes a lot of concentration to keep the thread from slipping and winding around the shaft, and I can tie the knot by hand almost as easily. The scissors are plenty sharp enough and the bobbin works fine. I have had very few problems with the hackle pliers, they grip the tip of the feather well and are a good weight.
