Cabela's Tlr Salt Fly Rod Reviews:

I'm blown away

I picked this up originally to bring as one option to a trip to Grand Cayman. I got the 8wt at a good price point and it was an option if I wanted to throw a lighter salt rod for bones or jacks. I'm almost speechless at how good this rod is at this price point. The guides are absolutely fantastic, the materials are comparable to rods 4 times the price, and the action is better than the 4 or 5 other rods I casted for months before deciding on which 8wt to buy. I was able to literally wade up to my chest in Cayman and still throw this thing further with less work than much more expensive rods can while I stand on land. I have caught all kinds of saltwater fish, freshwater bass, carp, buffalo, gar, etc. on this rod and loved every minute of it. I feel like I can even throw the largest LMB bass bug as far as my line will allow with the TLR Salt. I returned to other stores, 3 other rods I had purchased in 8 wt, one of which is 6 times the price of this one and always went back to this rod. The TLR Salt is so good for the money, it's now the only 8 wt I keep around. I bought the TLR fly reel in blue to compliment this thing and it is now my go to fishing system for anytime I need something above my 5 wt in freshwater or salt. Fantastic rod, it's an absolute shame that the Cabela's name isn't looked at more for higher end fly fishing setups. Somewhat related, I can't say enough about the in store experience I have had with having a "Cabela's" named rod. I returned one within first 90 days to try another "higher end" brand name rod at a much higher price point. Cabela's staff helped me and never asked a single question. I didn't like the "higher end" brand rod half as much as this TLR Salt. Brought it back again within 90 days and they refunded it no questions asked. Got another TLR Salt in 8 wt and couldn't be happier. Won't be getting anything else in this weight. Won't be the last "Cabelas" brand fly rod I buy thanks to warranty, craftsmanship, and unbelievably good rod action.

Needed a 12 wt for Baja

Did not know what to expect but they told me I needed an bigger rod. They said my 7-10 wt striper rods were not big enough. So for my 1st time fishing Baja I picked up the TLr Salt 12 wt at a great price. I probably would never use it except for Mexico Trips. Boy was I happy to have a big stick after catching my first Skipjack Tuna. It was only a small one under 10 lbs but it fought so hard and went straight down. My Sage RPL 7 wt was way over matched and my TFO Professional 10 wt was bent to the butt, the TLr 12 wt handled it like a champ. Talk about lifting power, that rod made it almost easy to land those hard fighting skippies. I cannot wait to head down there again. I think I'll pick up another one so I can rig one for top water and another with a sinking line. I had heard stories about broken rods and broken hearts due to those hard fighting fish in Mexico. Now I believe those stories and I believe in the TLr 12 wt....Just one complaint, I wish it had a fore grip to help fighting those fish. International Federation of Fly Fishers
