Cabela's Traditional Iii Fly Rod Reviews:

4 wt. 8'6": Just fine for the price.

Having a heck of a time finding a 4 weight with some feel, I gave this a shot when it was 1/3 off in the bargain cave. I can say that it is not at all disappointing, but not the supple small stream rod I was hoping for. Nice cosmetics and hardware, though the small locking rings must be turned too hard to keep the reel from wiggling free, and the cork is quite nice; sort of a tiger stripe array of narrow rings from the dense/burled portions normally thrown out. I like it and I like the fit of the grip in my large hands. I also like that it is made in S.Korea, not China.
This rod is more of a fast action and does not cast well off the tip, but has a sweet spot around 30-40 ft.. Tight loops are achievable at longer distances, but vigorous double hauling is required to get the powerful butt to load. The tip is not very flexible or sensitive, and I could not readily feel the rod loading on the back cast, making the timing window quite narrow. That said, it is a totally fine rod for the low price and capable of doing what most casters could ask of it. I just wish it could be had in a 9 ft. model, to give a more limber and lively tip!

Great rod for the price

I purchased the 9' 5wt rod last week as a replacement for a low quality rod I had been using. I got it for about 30% off, but, after using it, I'd pay full price. It had a great feel in my hand, placed flies as expected. I recommend if you're looking for a decent rod without spending a fortune.

Nice rod

Got the 9ft 5wt for my son as a upgrade. Great value for the price and is good for roll casting which is handy for small mountain streams and rivers

Perfect Rod

Rod arrived for opening week. It casts great. Could lay the fly exactly where I wanted on our up north narrow rivers. Can't imagine a better rod for the money!
