Caframo Kona Weatherproof Fan -

The Kona marine fan is a powerful but low-draw weatherproof fan designed for exterior use in the most demanding marine conditions. Featuring a watertight motor and constructed of extruded aluminum, UV-stabilized plastic and stainless fasteners, the Kona is ideal for the wheelhouse, dash, an exposed bridge or cockpit where splash and spray would spell disaster for other fans.

Designed and tested with the latest in 3D parametric and computational fluid dynamic software for maximum airflow and efficiency, the blade and grill of the IP55- (Ingress Protection) rated Kona combine to deliver an airflow rating of 266CFM on high speed. But the battery-friendly 3-speed fan draws only 0.21 amps on low, 0.26 on medium, and 0.37 on high.

Two mounting options are available: A cam-lock suction cup for portable use anywhere on board and a bracket for permanent mounting. Available in white or black.

I bought two Caframo Model 817 12v fans for a boat that I was to take delivery of a few weeks later. I received the fans and put them in storage without opening them. The deal on my boat fell through so the fans sat there for 6 months. I just got a new boat with a cabin and installed the fans. Both of them ran very slowly. I checked and confirmed that they were receiving a full 12 volts. The fans are labeled 12 volt on the decal. I called Caframo and the technician confirmed what I thought was the problem. These fans are actually 24 volt models and were labeled wrong. I was told to send the fans back to Caframo and include the receipt for the shipping to Canada which was $30.00. I later received a call from Ruth at Caframo advising me that the fans were diagnosed and the motors were "tired" from use. She also said that there was some minor corrosion on the metal protective grill on the fans. I told her that the fans were never used and that there may have been some slight exposure to the elements inside my storage shed but the fans were never removed from the box. I also asked her if she was aware of the fact that no matter the cosmetics of these fans that they are actually 24 volt fans that were labeled wrong. The end result is that they sent me one new fan and no refund of shipping cost. So here is my final thought about Caframo fans. If the quality control would allow two fans to be labeled wrong and storage in the original packaging in a pretty sealed environment would allow degradation of the fans enough to be slow, then either way, they should have been replaced along with shipping. The fact is that if the fans were truly 12 volt fans, I would not be having this problem. Stay away from this brand.

Another loud fan

We purchased the Kona together with the Bora and Sirocco in order to select the quietest fan for the berth. The Kona ended up in the engine room. It is very loud on high speed and makes a rattling noise on speed 1 and 2. The construction appears very solid and it is powerful.
