Camelbak Octane LR 70 oz. Hydration Pack.
The Camelbak Octane LR 70 oz. Hydration Pack keeps water secure and amazingly stable for trail running and adventure races. It uses a secure backpack design but places the hydration reservoir in the lumbar region of the pack to fit snugly, put weight where it should be for a runner, and jiggle less. The lumbar hydration system holds the water around your lumbar region instead of on your back, therefore the water stays still so you can move freely and push yourself. This pack fits lightweight extra layers, energy bars, a headlamp, trail maps and a compass, so you'll be prepared and comfortable over the long haul. For trail running or adventure races when you don't want water sloshing around on your back, the Camelbak Octane LR 70 oz. Hydration Pack is the perfect choice.

first off it's a great back pack idea to have the water centered lower. that helps tons. the drink tube can be routed a couple ways so there is no correct way to route that. Do what is comfortable. I got the black and yellow version and tried to dye it solid black. It doesn't take as far as the inner lining and the zipper tabs go. the cinch straps turned black though. wish it had a bigger pocket in front to hold a cell phone but the side back pocket worked out fine ... just don't take a spill and break your screen. it takes a few rides to get the pack the way you want it but it hugs snug and dont worry about the drink tube clip, that keeps it secured well. i cut my tube a few inches short thinking it was going to flop around too much at the drinking end but it doesn't. the center cargo area i dont keep anything in that ... too loose for small items less that a softball size to stay put. cinch tabs are great to apply pressure to the hydration bladder. good leak proof connect. washing the bladder is easy ... warm water with dish soap, close it and swish it around then rinse a few times. i like to hang the pack on the coat hanger by the front door then use 2 laundry clips off the cargo strings to let the bladder dry out. top chest strap hits high, no worries if you wear a heart monitor. I love this pack ... wish it came in black and red instead.
I am writing this review for all the people who run multiple spartan races and do lots of trail running!!! I did alot of research on packs for weeks and decided on this one. After taking the time to adjust the straps to fit me comfortably it didn't take long to get used to. I purchased this pack to run multiple spartan races and also train for other runs and can say this pack is very durable!! It's low profile and lumbar reservoir made it almost effortless to climb under barbed wire and scale various kinds of walls/cargo nets. I'm a very competitive runner for those of you that are curious and completed a spartan trifecta this year with this pack. The geigerrig is also an option and cool pack but its very bulky and most people running these kinds of races had to remove their packs to get through many of the obstacles. That includes other camelback models. I am also using this pack to train for a marathon . Hopefully this helps others looking for some kind of review from a customer as opposed to a salesman. Oh yea Backcountry rules and I do most of my oredering from them due to their knowledge of their products and how fast they ship orders. If you tell them you need something by a certain date they make it happen without totally ripping you off on shipping.
I know you shouldn't try anything new on race day but.... Signed up late for a 25K run over the mountains with 4500' elevation change. Got my new Octane LR the day before, filled up the bladder, packed all the essentials and off I went. Unbelievably comfortable, fit lit a glove, no swishing due to the adjustable compression straps. This made my run a pleasure.
I made a pack like this years ago. But this pack is great. I have been running the mt's for years and this is a great fit and moves with you.I am very happy with this fit.I thought the price was a bit high.I will also use it for short tours skiing in the backcountry.
Bought this pack to wear during half-marathons as I'm tired of holding bottles in my hands. I thought maybe the lumbar design would keep the weight off my shoulders, which it did, however, overall, it still didn't work well and I opted to return it. Pros: comfortable design, good pocket sizes, doesn't bounce too much, rape whistle is a cool feature. Cons: Pockets would have been difficult to reach while running. Sternum strap is a little too low for women. Found it pushed the girls together in a totally awkward way. Too heavy when full of water. The biggest reason I returned this product was that it felt like I was running with 20 extra pounds on me. Also, I couldn't keep cool with such a large pack on my back. This is probably just a personal sensation, so I wouldn't let this review wreck it for you, it just didn't work for me. Great pack for hiking or walking, it just didn't suit me for running. Giving it 3 stars because I could use it for hiking if I didn't already have other Camelbaks.
