We love any component that grants the freedom to use it different ways, and that's why tubeless tires get our gears spinning. Between the near elimination of flats, smoother rolling tires choices, and general comfort, the Campagnolo Shamal Ultra 2-Way Fit Clincher Wheelset steals our heart by being the perfect daily wheelset that can still tear up a crit race at the removal of a tube. With a near century of dedication to speed, Campagnolo has designed the new Shamal to uphold the trendsetting innovation of the Shamal legacy, and its enough to get any Campy lover drooling.
Tubeless clincher technologies have experienced a meteoric rise over the past few years, for good reason, but nothing has done more to progress tubeless innovation than Campagnolo's duly named flavor of tubeless technology--2-Way Fit. When run tubeless, the 2-Way Fit rim profile eliminates internal rim friction between the tube and tire, and creates a more comfortable ride quality by requiring less tire pressure than a standard clincher to achieve the same level of contact surface. 2-Way Fit also promotes greater safety by allowing the use of a tubeless tire as a tube-run clincher in the event of a puncture. However, the event of pesky pinch-flats have nearly been eliminated.
The new bead design makes it virtually impossible for the tire to unseat from the event of impact with debris. The new Campagnolo tubeless system is further complimented through Campy's Ultra-Fit technology. This system was used to shape the rim's sidewalls in order to perfectly mate with the tire, and accordingly eliminate the dispersion of energy, and friction, that occurs when a tire shifts within the rim. The two systems work in harmony to give you longer, safer, and more efficient rides. The wheelset also utilizes Campagnolo's new Mega G3 Geometry. This system is attributable to the Shamal's three-spoke grouping, and more importantly, for the wheels' emphasis on perfect spoke tension. Campagnolo realized that smooth efficiency is controlled by a balanced spoke tension, but that drive-side tension is compromised by the inclusion of a cassette. The G3 solution was to double the drive-side spoke count, and thus increase the tension load. This architecture creates a shared load balance for a structural reliability that gives the best power transmission possible.
The design increases transverse rigidity, which increases power transfer while eliminating high velocity vibrations. To further increase stiffness, the wheelset features a wide-stance carbon/aluminum hub flange and body. This improved design increases torsional and lateral rigidity at yaw angles, which equates to direct reactivity when you break pace from the line for the final sprint, or get out of the saddle to make your mark on the mountain. The Shamal's front wheel uses an aerodynamic 16 spoke lacing pattern, while the rear adds durability with 21 G3 rear spokes.
The build is fast, but Campagnolo also places a premium on durability. For years of service-free riding, the Shamal uses sealed Ultra Smooth Bearings (USB) on the front and rear hubs. Campagnolo claims that USB are 50% smoother than standard bearings, which means less energy dissipation as a result of friction. For consistent, increased braking power, the rim sidewalls have been machined on the outside. Campy also included its Eccentric-closure system quick-release skewers, and a wear indicator to measure the life of the rim.
The Campagnolo Shamal Ultra 2-Way Fit Wheelset comes with a Campagnolo freehub body that accepts 9-, 10- or 11-speed cassettes. The rims, hubs, and spokes are Black.
