Worth checking out

I run this downrigger on a 16' old town canoe. The instructions are easy to understand and assembly is quite easy. I am very cautious about lowering the weight, and try not to rely entirely upon the clutch system to let out wire.
The downrigger ball which came with the kit is a 10lb cannonball weight, which is too heavy for my canoe. I switched to a 4 lb weight.
I would give this downrigger 5 stars, but for the lack of a line counter reset. The only way to keep track of line out is to to measure out the line out from its original position, instead of zero.

Great Experience

I purchased this rig 2 weeks ago, took my time installing it, learning all the pieces, and looking at several location options on my boat settling on the right rear corner of the transom.
My son and I had excellent success with this rig, catching a nice salmon the first time out. The clutch assembly, counter and rod holder all worked well. He too is able to easily work the device.
I will be purchasing another rig for the left side transom area soon and will be looking at later purchasing the swivel mount bases for both.

Good Manual Rigger

The rigger / mounting system is great for sure. If you want a counter - make sure you buy the after-market line counter that mounts directly on the spool of the downrigger. The counter on the end of the boom is terrible and completely useless - it can't be reset, and if the line slides too fast through the counter, you'll be off by 15 feet by the end of your first fishing trip.

Good buy.

For use in under 100' conditions this product works well. Strong, simple and easy. Does everything a downrigger should do in a basic package. Well worth the price. A new world of fishing potential is available to the angler with downrigging. Just came back from catching my first Macinaws trolling at 90' depth.

cheap accessories

The down rigger itself works very well but the alligator release is poorly constructed. Broke apart on the third hit from a fish.
