Chaco sets a new sandal benchmark for ME

Rating:*****

I got a pair of these after doing research on footwear that "actually" support your feet and don't just "look good". Chaco's are the BEST sandals my feet have ever stomped on! I'm a TOTAL convert. Goodbye Tevas, goodbye Reefs, and especially my meager pile of 3.99 fly by night flip-flops!!! Anyone need x-tra thick beach-themed drink coasters....seriously...

I wore these religiously walking the uneven streets of Playa Del Carmen, Cancun and Cozumel for 4 days straight. My feet were not as tired, they did not feel as sore and my arches were not cursing at me! This was a real test, I walked on the sandy beaches, got them wet repeatedly, cobble stone streets, toured Tulum in them, trotted through the cenote riddled mayan-owned jungles, shopped the overly-commercialized streets and even took them dancing on Playa Del Carmen's 5th street for about 6 hrs. After all that, feet were as happy as I was.

In terms of durability, they are outstanding. After my 2-week trip, the vibram soles showed NO WEAR...almost like I never wore them...AWESOME! They are very comfortable and they DID ACTUALLY support my arch! The only 'thing' I noticed is that after about 3 days of walking on them they did wear my skin a bit on the outside strap of each sandal. Hard to describe exactly where, outer-lower left on left foot & outer-lower right on right foot. Now this is MY fault because I took a flip-flop when I should have been wearing a trail-shoe or maybe even a boot. Being a former Teva & Reef man myself, the Chaco flip's straps do come back a bit farther than the average sandal, in order to create a more stable platform, however this is also what rubbed the skin on my feet raw. No blood or anything but it was sore and red. I only mention this because I was new to Chaco and this took some adjusting to after about 27hrs of wear. Don't let this deter you one bit, I liked them so much that as soon as I got back I bought myself another pair!!! A stylin' beach bum...am I

Chaco will resole or custom fit them if you so desire. Needless to say I'm moving in on the Chaco Z's now and they are all worth every penny. Plus Chaco is a very green company, for those that care.

Don't take my word for it...Buy a pair, your feet will thank you.

Durability at the expense of comfort

Rating:****

After being a loyal fan of both Reef and Teva Mush flip flops, I found a pair of Chaco Flip on sale and decided to give them a shot. Overall, I've concluded that while the Chaco Flip is not as comfortable as the Reefs and Tevas, they are much more durable.

I'll start with the soles. In the past I've easily worn through at least one pair of Tevas/Reefs each summer. The Chacos, on the other hand, sport Vibram soles and are very durable. They seem as though they will last for many years. Unfortunately, this durability comes at the expense of comfort and weight. In contrast to the the soft, squishy, light (3.4 oz) foam sandals I have worn in the past, the Chaco soles have a rough, hard, heavy (10.4 oz) design. At 3 times the weight of my old sandals, I am still adjusting to them. In addition to the durability of the soles, they have a better ergonomic fit and become grippier when wet which is a plus if you plan on wearing them in wet conditions. I've found that foam sandals get very slick when wet and provide little or no support. The strap is not as soft as the strap on Reefs and Tevas, but it is well made and fits well. I found no need to size up or down. Lastly, the sandals are more expensive than the foam variety, but this is warranted as they are likely to last much longer. All in all, these are very stylish and well-made sandals. If you are used to heavier shoes you will have no problem with them and will love the legendary Chaco durability and quality. However, if you like the squishy, soft feeling of lightweight foam flip flops (ala Teva Mush), I would suggest trying them on before pulling out your credit card.

Taking me everywhere in Brazil - I´ve had on/off luck with flipflops, but this is truly the most comfortable pair I´ve ever worn. For the past three weeks, I´ve been walking miles and miles--everywhere--through rivers, on hot beaches, on jungle trails, in big cities like Salvador, and in little towns with uneven brick or cobblestone roads and sidewalks--and the straps have not rubbed uncomfortably at all, even when they are wet. The extra thickness and arch support of the sole make it possible to walk miles and miles without any discomfort. Not a single blister. Plus, it´s surprisingly easy to run in these flipflops, which I haven´t found to be true with others that I´ve owned in the past. I often have problems with the thong rubbing between my toes, but this one is made of fabric and is super comfortable and flexible. The sandals fit well from the beginning, but have stretched slightly, making them even better as I´ve continued to wear them. Looks-wise, these sandals are a cut above the usual beach flipflop, and are styled in such a way that I can wear them to restaurants or clubs without feeling too ´dressed down.` So, I´ve never been overly-inclined to write reviews, but I give high ratings to these sandals, and even higher ratings to the customer service team at Zappos, which has been beyond excellent in my numereous interactions with them(seriously). Give them a raise! ;)

No gimmicks, Just High Quaility

Rating:*****

I generally don't like flips--they are sloppy and cheap. So if I was going to get any I'll admit it, I wanted Reefs. I wanted to be able to open bottles with my feet and/or sport a few shots of liquor in my footbeds. I tried Reefs, turns out those gimmicks came at the sacrifice of function and comfort. I reluctantly tried on Chaco's. The contoured footbed with arch support cups my foot and keeps the sandal in place far more than your average foam plank flips. The strap swings back farther on your foot for a more secure fit. The textured surface of the flip keeps them on your feet even if they get soaked. The Vibram souls promise to wear more gradually than the average flip. The price is more than standard flips, but you're buying more than a standard flip, and that $$$ isn't going towards fashion or gimmicks either. It is true that these are heavier than some flips, but if you're looking to shave ounces from your extreme light-hiking pack perhaps you don't need to bring flips in the first place. I would challenge anyone to walk a few miles in these flips vs. foam planks and tell me that softer non-supporting foam didn't leave their feet just beat down at the end of the day! Wait until they're on sale, or buy them full price--either way they're worth it.

they make my feet happy

Rating:*****

i think i bought these sandals one size too big, but i still love them. after living in flip flops for two years as a peace corps volunteer on a pacific island for two years and continuing to do so in grad school for another couple of years, i was a Reef fan. they were relatively durable and relatively comfortable... until i got into a pair of Chacos. i always loved the foot bed of Chaco sandals, but their straps always rubbed me raw; so i stopped wearing mine. when i saw they had flip flops, i bought a pair immediately. i'm a huge fan. like many other reviews have pointed out, my feet aren't as tired when i take them off at the end of the day. the flip flops don't fall off my feet when my feet get wet (like they do in Reefs). and i don't slip in when i wear them in the rain. the traction is great. also, the support is pretty good too - not a lot of soft cushion like with reefs, but much better support.
overall, i would recommend these to everyone, so long as they get the right size. i bought them a little big, but still love them and will wear them whenever i can!

Love them

Rating:*****
I went into the local REI wanting to purchase some new Reef sandals (after 6 years of use, they were finally dead). I was unhappy with the new "styles" of Reef sandals, as they were too "loud" and actually pretty ugly. I saw some flips that looked really cool, and then saw the price tag. [$] for flip flops? I tried them on and they felt pretty good, albeit very stiff. I asked the salesman if these "chacos" are worth the price, as I had never owned a pair before. He said there was a reason every employee at the store owned a pair. So I bought them. I actually kinda hated them the first week or two, and almost brought them back. However, by the third week they were nicely broken in, and now I get excited to put them on every time. They feel so good on my feet. Very comfortable. They also have very thick soles, so I dont have to worry about things poking through the bottom. I have owned them about three months now, and there is virtually no wear. They will last me at least a couple seasons, most likely more.I would recommend these sandals to anyone who loves to wear flip flops on a regular basis.

Solid Chacos

Rating:*****

I haven't been wearing these for more than a few months, so the long term durability remains to be seen, but these things fit so nicely! They were definitely a little tight at first, I'm glad I opted for the slightly larger size, maybe half to a full size, but they are not too long on my foot at all, and they have broken in perfectly. They have a super solid feel, and very comfy with the curvy arch of the rubber.

I really like these, I was tired of all my flip flops breaking at the thong, so I hope these last, I'm sure they will. Super solid construction, great fit, great look too. Pay up a bit and get these, especially since your cheapies will be breaking soon, it's just better to get something that will last. BTW, I bought them on amazon for 23 bux, so I didn't even really pay up much at all.

Review Title

Rating:*****

As a lifeguard I have gone through many pairs of flip flops. At first I got Tevas, but they only lasted me a year because the sole would wear down to nothing. Not to mention, the soft foam padding was horrible for support. Then one day my wife bought me a pair of these. At first I was hesitant on the price, but it wasn't long before I knew nothing could compare! These have lasted me over 2 years of very heavy wear, getting wet daily in harsh pool water, beat down by the rays of the sun, hundreds of miles walking, and more. I am around 200 lbs and these give me the support I need to be on my feet and walking all day (on hard and abraisive concrete). They're expensive for only being flip flops, but after my experience I would pay full price any day. Buy these and you'll be spoiled for life.

flip-flops for the nuclear holocaust

Rating:*****

Ok, so the Chaco Flip might not be as functional as the more traditional Chaco designs. But as far as flip-flops go, they're hard to beat. A friend of mine has owned her Flips for over four years, and the only visible wear is the spot where a dog tried to chew the strap apart. I've had my own flips for two years and they are holding up fantastically. At least one reviewer noted that the Flips are not as comfortable as Tevas or Keens... I don't find that to be true. I prefer the fit and materials of the Flip. They also seem to provide more support for your foot.

The long and the short of it - if you have to give up your regular Chacos for a stylish flip-flop, you can't go wrong with these. These are the only flip-flops that will survive a nuclear holocaust and then some.

THE Hawaii slippah !

Rating:*****
There are plenty of cheap "slippah" sandals to be had here in Hawaii. For us it is the wear any where foot wear.

But one of the nastiest things you can step on out here is the large kiawe thorns. They go right through the bottom of your slippahs....unless you have your Flips on !

I brought a pair back from the mainland a couple of years ago....and have rarely taken them off. After seeing the performance of mine, almost all of my group of friends have bought their own pair.

Everyone agrees it is the best slippah they have used....and they even look nice enough to wear out to dinner or at a wedding (we all have done both)....get a pair !

They are more expensive than the $5 drug store sandals, but the Vibram sole lasts way longer and they are MUCH more durable.

Negative Reviews:

Bummer, I used to love these

Rating:*

I've bought two pairs of these over the past, oh, 10 years, and wear them as my every day shoe. So I went ahead and ordered what would be my third pair recently, identical size and model to what I've had twice before.

Uh, oh. Looked mostly the same, but the sole was different, not a biggie. Put them on - "Hm, doesn't quite feel right. Maybe I just need to break them in." Wore them for a week until I couldn't stand it any more.

Called Chaco and, alas, the company has been sold and they are now manufacturing in China, and they're "having some quality control problems with straps that are too short."

They said they'd replace them, including free shipping both ways, so I sent them in. Back came an identical pair with the identical defect - strap is too short.

Bummer, I loved my Chacos, but I've returned them now and will have to find another brand.

Chaco Flips size small

Rating:*

The Chaco Flip sandals are sized at least a half and really a whole size too small.....had to return them....cost me shipping and my time for which, in the end, I received nothing.
Backcountry's advertising is deceptive. They lured me into the purchase with a sale banner but behind the sale banner only six of 21 shoes were actually on sale. Sizes were very limited. See for yourself, this is how the ad reads: On Sale: $35.72 - $54.95 35% Off, Regularly: $54.95.
It was a bad experience for me. I doubt I will be shopping Backcountry or Chaco again...certainly not Chaco, not in this economy....$55 for flip-flops. You have got to be kidding. Backcountry, you are into me for my hourly rate. Won't be spending my time, wasting my time, on your nonsense again. I value my life and just don't have it to give away. You have fooled me once. There won't be a twice.

Rating:**

You did not have a womens size 8 so I tried the mens size 7. Big mistake, way too big and had to return them. I requested a refund but have not seen anything yet. I will keep looking for the womens size 8 because I know how great these flips are.

Wore these flips to my beach-themed holiday party...big mistake. After gettin' my drink on and tearin' up the dance floor, the strap separated from the footbed!!! This wardrobe malfunction dampened the rest of the evening for me. [...]

Durability at the price of comfort

Rating:***

These Chaco Flips are extremely durable and very solid. The first impression you get when you first pick them up is how solid they feel. Then you try it on your feet and you instantly realize how well they hug your feet. But be warned, the straps are made from nylon with no padding - there's stitching on the underbelly of the straps and they rub my upper feet raw.

If you can get over this, however, by way of putting on band-aid or climbing tape on the raw area or whatever, the sandal is backed by lifetime warranty, is very solid and extremely durable. The foot bed is NOT made from cushy material like in Rainbows or Sanuks or Reefs but it does stick to your feet in wet environment and... again, very durable as approach flops. Order size up. Considering comfort, not worth their full price, buy it when on sale.

aharadir2345519 at Backcountry.com on 04/13/2009

Good but heavy and pricey

Rating:***

Overall construction quality good. Beware of sizing: they are narrow and run small. My feet are 8 wide so, depending on the brand, I normally wear 8.5 and sometimes 8. With these Flips, I had to get a 9. The straps took some getting use to as the fit is tight. Initially, the straps hurt the top of my feet, but now they feels ok. I've been wearing these almost everyday for a month now, and they seem to be fine. One advantage of these Chaco's over cheapo ($5 to $10) flip-flops is the sole. The sole on the Chaco's have more grip and won't slip when wet. Disadvantages: (1) Price: sure these are a lot better than cheapo flip-flops, but are they 10x better? That's for you to decide. (2) Weight, these are significantly heavier than other foam-type flip-flops. The durability comes at the expense of weight.

uncomfortable

Rating:***

i bought these sandals after reading a few reviews that said that they start out uncomfortable, and then stretch and get more comfortable. not the case with me -- i owned them for about a month, and got some blisters, but figured that they would stretch soon. however, they didn't, and i eventually returned them. otherwise, very cool looking. one more thing: the arch is in a funny place.. but maybe that is just specific to my feet.

flip to flop

Rating:***

These are my 2nd out of 3 pairs that I owe. These are the classic style of 'island' essential. I have wide feet with low arch profile. I would say that these are good quality construction. The comfort is not as cushy as some other brands but they have good traction on the urban sidewalk and some mild trails. I would recommend these for lazy Sunday but not your daily commute.

This Chaco Flip looks really good, but it is not a sandal I would choose for all-day comfort. The sizing does run large. Typically Chacos are great!

Quality material marred by high arch (uncomfortable with each step) and heavy feel. I've owned many sandals with quality material and lightweight.
