Variety is the spice of life -- we couldn't agree more. We understand ('cause we've been there) that after numerous hours of training and racing, the body needs to mix it up a little in terms of what goes in the tank. That's why the folks at Clif Bar set out to create another energy food option that complements their bars and gels. The result is Clif Shot Bloks. They're simple-to-handle, easy-to-chew, and provide similar nutrition to Shot gel, so they'll fit seamlessly into your training and racing nutrition program.
The primary ingredient for Shot Bloks is brown rice syrup which provides easily assimilated carbohydrates for working muscles, and they provide the mineral salts known as electrolytes. These electrolytes allow electrical impulses to travel properly throughout your body, permitting normal bodily function. When you sweat, you start to deplete your electrolyte stores and experience potential performance decline, so it's best to help replenish them through food and fluid intake.
Clif created Shot Bloks, each in a 10g size, so that 3 Bloks provide 100 calories. That makes it easy to track caloric intake during long outings. There are 6 Bloks to a single serve package, so one package provides 200 calories.
In one order of Shot Bloks you'll get 18 individual 6-Blok packages. The individual packages slide easily into your jersey pocket for quick access while taking up minimal space. This design also keeps it simple to squeeze the Bloks directly into your mouth for single handed re-fueling. Bloks are available in Black Cherry, Cola, Orange, Margarita, Cran Razz, Lemon Lime, Mountain Berry and Strawberry. Black Cherry and Cola have 50mg caffeine, Orange has 25mg. Margarita has 3x the sodium while the remaining Shot Bloks offer no additional stimulants. Please be forewarned that you're all-but-certain to get terribly addicted. For all of their nutritional value, they are candy on the palate. In our experience it's the first athlete-focused food you'll ever need to protect from the non-athletes in your life.
These prevent bonk, that is assumed and is also true. They are easy to eat hour after hour on your bike or run. What sets these apart from other chews is the packaging. You will never eat all of them in a single sitting (on the saddle) so having the "tube" shape to the packaging allows you to rip the top off, push a few out with your fingers and toss it back into your jersey pocket. Then, go win the race. I've even seen people in lick the bottom of a few blocks then stick them to their toptube for easy consumption. I haven't tried this myself, but apparently they stay on their pretty well.
I really like the Strawberry flavor. Mountain Berry's not bad. Cran-razz didn't wow me, and Margarita wasn't as good as I had hoped (I guess nothing can compare to the real thing). In the list of chewy energy things, ranked by chewiness, this falls in the middle of Gu Comps (harder to chew) and Honey Stingers (easier to chew). The packaging can be a little tough to deal with while running. I like to cut the package in half before my run so I have two mini tubes and I can just slide the next Shot Blok up into my mouth as needed; no fumbling while running.
I just ran the Wasatch Back Relay and was having some cramping issues on my first run!!!!! I thought to myself I would never make it. Lucky enough more experienced runners were in my crew and they recommended these!! The margarita flavor with the added sodium helped me keep water in and keep hydrated!! I give these an A++++ I will be using them for all my endurance events. I never thought of extra sodium to help with cramping, but sure enough with these bad boys they totally made all the difference. I crushed my next two legs and had a blast!!!
I just bought a box of these and am so incredibly happy with my decision. Whether you are hiking, climbing or ski touring, throw some of these in your pocket and any time you are feeling low on energy just throw one of these chewy gummies in your mouth and within minutes you will have your second wind. I have tried the Strawberry, Mountain Berry and Cran-Razz and of those three the Cran-Razz is probably my favorite, but they are all very tasty, and I'm sure the flavors I haven't tried are just as good.
as long as you dont let these guys heat too much and turn into a giant gummy worm, they are the perfect size to eat. frozen ones help bring immediate post-workout sugar when its hot. when warm they can be mixed into tea or other drinks. pretty much endless options for consumption, instant energy, and extra nutrients if necessary.
These are by far my favorite little snacks to keep in my pack. Since they are more like gummies you can keep a package in your pocket and snack on them throughout the day. They are great for touring as I haven't had an issue with them freezing as most granola bars do.
I don't have anything different than other reviewers. However, I wish these came in single serving packs (3 chews) - would be easier for me to carry in the small pocket on the back of my running shorts or in fuel belt. Other than that, these are sooo great!
These are great treats. They do give you a boost, even if it is mostly mental (see sugar cubes on the tongue study) I generally throw 2 in, chew them up and push them into my lip for "hiker chew"
I actually like all the flavors
These bloks are a must have on any type of all day trip. My body is pretty sensitive to caffeine but these don't seem to bother me. My only gripe is that when the get cold they are a bit hard.
These are awesome I use them when I go climbing and can be very helpful in terms of boosting my energy levels back up. Not only do they help with a burst of energy bu they also taste really good
