Clif Bloks - After numerous hours of training and racing, the body needs to refuel. That's why the folks at Clif Bar set out to create another energy food option that complements their bars and gels. The result is Clif Shot Bloks. They're simple-to-handle, easy-to-chew, and provide similar nutrition to Shot gel, so they'll fit seamlessly into your training and racing nutrition program. The primary ingredient for Shot Bloks is brown rice syrup which provides easily assimilated carbohydrates for working muscles, and they provide the mineral salts known as electrolytes. These electrolytes allow electrical impulses to travel properly throughout the body, permitting normal bodily function. When you sweat, you start to deplete your electrolyte stores and experience potential performance decline, so it's best to help replenish them through food and fluid intake. Clif created Shot Bloks, each in a 10g size, so that 3 Bloks provide 100 calories. That makes it easy to track caloric intake during long outings. There are 6 Bloks to a single serve package, so one package provides 200 calories. The individual packages slide easily into your jersey pocket for quick access while taking up minimal space. This design also keeps it simple to squeeze the Bloks directly into your mouth for single handed re-fueling. Bloks are available in Black Cherry, Orange, Margarita, and Cran Razz. Black Cherry has 50mg caffeine, Orange has 25mg. Margarita has 3x the sodium while the remaining Shot Bloks offer no additional stimulants.

Features:

  • Consume 3 - 6 SHOT BLOKS every hour during activity; always follow consumption with water
  • Black Cherry contains 50 mg of caffeine
  • Multiple flavors available
  • Each serving contains 20 mg potassium, 24 g carb, 70 mg sodium (Margarita flavor has 210 mg sodium to ward off muscle cramps)
  • 33 calories per cube—so it's easy to customize and track caloric and electrolyte intake during long outings and races
  • Each bag weighs 2.1 ounces
  • Ingredients include organic brown rice syrup, organic evaporated cane juice, organic brown rice syrup solids
  • Orange and Tropical Punch contain 25 mg of caffeine
  • 2 servings per bag

Energy that tastes good.

On a cross-country bike trip this summer, I tried just about every energy supplement that's out there (gels, bars, blocks, drinks) and I would have to say that the shot bloks are my favorite. All the flavors taste great (except for the lemon-lime one, I think) and they have saved me from bonking multiple times. The only problem I've found is that a serving size is 3 blocks and the package holds 6 blocks...it's not the easiest to close the package back up after you've ripped it open while out on the road.

Tasty

I have had a hard time with power foods. A lot of times they taste bad or the texture is unappealing to me. The Shot Bloks stand out. They are easy to eat and quite tasty. If you need quick energy and don't tend to enjoy the classic energy food I strongly suggest Clif Shot Bloks.

NOT a stumbling blok...

Halfway through and 38-mile hike--in a VERY short amount of time--I became famished to the point of being faint to the point of stopping. Minutes after inhaling a bag of shot bloks and swigging water, all weakness fell away and I was able to continue my hike as if nothing had happened...

good on a long ride

I like the shot blocks because they don't linger in the mouth, sort of like a cyclist's "teddy bears" candy. While "empty" gel packets always seem to leak a little sticky gel in my jersey pocket, the shot block wrapper is just a dry piece of waste.

Good alternative to GU

A good product for use during a game and as an alternative to GU, I use both and use them interchangeably. Need to drink water with them as they are like eating gumdrops in consistency.

Taste good.

Awsome product

These Shot Blocks are great. I was nervous to eat them at first but I shoulden't have been. they are great tasting and gave me lots of energy compared to their size.

Great tasting power-snack!

This is a nice diversion from PowerBars or Gu's.
There is really no way to carry them during runs so I eat them before or after workouts.

This is a great replacement for GU

Used while hiking the AT, found it simple and very easy to share with fellow hikers.

CLIF Shot Bloks

I purchased all three different flavors. To date, I've only tried the lemon Lime - I'm not too impressed. Essentially, the product is like dehydrated Gatorade - they are an electrolyte-replacing energy chew and the packaging clearly states take with plenty of water (I'm assuming to turn it into Gatorade in your stomach). The flavor didn't impress me, and the consistency which I was hoping to be more akin to Gummy Bears was softer in consistency more like stiff Jell-O. The blocks are also not individually wrapped - which is good out on the trail to reduce the amount of paper to potentially blow away in a stiff wind, but the plastic wrapping tore easily making it difficult to reseal if you only wanted to eat one portion size and inevitably collect lint from your pocket on the next serving. I didn't find that they gave me any more (or less for that matter) energy. I'm gonna give the other flavors another chance (since I already bought them), but for the educated consumer, I'd recommend saving your money and just fill one water bottle with Gatorade and bring a handful of Gummy Bears to snack on. Both the flavor and the consistency will be familiar and the sugar will give you the little extra boost you are looking for. Not to mention you can buy a package of Gummy Bears for around ½ the cost for twice the amount.
