Versatile Camp Stove

I needed a second camp stove for a Scouting campout. When I saw this particular stove, I thought the grill would be good for grilling meats (burgeres, hot dogs, sausages) and veggies and save me from using another pan.

Taking the stove out of the box, the first thing i noticed was the weight of this thing (heavy!). Closer inspection I was pleased to see quality construction and from a functional standpoint, smoothe turning dials. The instant light feature worked ok. I say that because as you push the igniter, the entire stove will move back. I have to hold the stove with one hand and push the igniter with the over.

In an actual cooking scenario, both the sides worked really well. The dials turn nicely. This is a powerful stove. However, the grill tends to run hot, so if cooking meats directly on the grill, keep heat at a low temp. I would have liked to see a flat griddle option to be able to cook eggs, bacon, and pancakes.

Cleaning is a pain. I end up lining the bottom of the grill with foil to not have to spend so much time cleaning the stove.

All in all, it's a really good stove. It has helped me when camping with larger groups. The negatives I mentioned are minor and after a few uses, you learn to deal with it.

Leh-git!

this thing is sweet! yeah i did put one con, but you make due! its a tad hard to control temp settings but hey if you cant handle that you cant handle camping so go home..

its easy to clean, def read the instructions first tho, you cant put pots n pans on the grill portion only the steaks n stuff.. but you have the extra spot where you can and yes it does boil water fast, provides great wind cover, and does it all well..

i was out in the desert with 10-20 mph winds and this sucker stayed lit and still cooked just fine. ill admit it does take a bit longer to boil water with those winds but it does the job. it has a spark button which is nice and it works, and one tank lasted me 3-4 days for breakfast, quick lunch (hot dogs) and dinner everyday.. if you want luxury in car camping or even a day at the beach this is your ticket..

Great camp stove for family

I chose this because I didn't want to bring separate stove and a grill for car camping. Just used this recent purchase for a 6 night trip in the White Mountains for our family of 4. Used it each day for dinner, most breakfasts and boiled water for tea/coffee each afternoon and didn't finish 3 bottles of propane. Loved the instastart even though you have to hold the stove at the same time to push. The grill side was slightly more tempermental to ignite but it worked. Used this to grill steak kebabs, chicken breasts, hot dogs, burgers, sausages for dinner while cooking rice or veggies at the same time. Boiling water for coffee or tea was very fast. Even boiled water for a pound of pasta in a reasonable time. The grill surface washed up easily. Used foil under the grill side and changed it each day. Yes, the propane bottle attachment was awkward. This stove/grill combo was a great purchase for our family.

A Good Stove gone Bye-Bye!

I had one of these stoves for at least 10 years. I had to replace 1 componant in that time. Took it for a weekend soccer trip and for some reason the grill part had stopped working. Tried to fix but couldn't so it's going bye-bye.
Only 2 things I didn't like about this grill (well 3 now) 1) When I bought it was more than half what it's being sold for now.2) When grilling it would be nice to have some sort of top to cover the food especially when it's windy as the sides don't really do a whole lot. I believe this would also make it more efficient. I used tinfoil and it melted the grate! 3) It's more like a fryer/ grill as it doesn't really spread the flame very well so all cooking has to be done in the center.
Otherwise this grill has served me well on many a car camping trips over the years.

Good camp stove

Bought this stove for camping purposes and the possible power outages. Cooked some steaks on the grill while boiling rice on the stove. The insta- start lights the first time - no constant clicking. The gas flow is very smooth and produces plenty of heat. The rice boiled in no time. When the flame is low it keeps a steady flame and has not flickered out. The grill evenly cooked the steaks and left nice grill lines on the meat for a good looking steak. Clean up was easy for both the grill and the catch basin. I would recommend for cooking purposes in the field to line the catch basin will aluminum foil so it's easy clean when leaving. The catch cup easily removes and also cleans easy. The grill has a non-stick surface that almost came clean using hot water only. I give it 5 stars.

Sweet stove

Someone purchased this stove for me and my wife for a wedding present, and we are very happy with it. We recently did a ten day car camping trip and used this stove a lot. I also take it with me when I camp in Whistler on mountain biking trips. I like having the grill side for cooking hot dogs or just keeping something warm. The stove side works just fine too. It doesn't seem to use much propane, since we didn't even burn through one propane can on our ten day trip. One problem was that the little metal side flaps that hook into the lid to create a wind screen would sometimes come unhooked. You could fix this with a mini bungie cord though. All in all, it's a great stove.

The perfect camp stove for my family

When out at the campground, this stove is perfect.
I decided to upgrade from the old white gas to this stove, and I gotta say, it was the best choice! This stove lights instantly, and burns very hot (8 cup coffee pot boils in about 5 minutes). It is very fuel efficient, as we only used about half a bottle of fuel on a two night stay, cooking all meals on this stove.
The greatest thing is the built in grill, so you can cook directly on the stove on the big grill surface, while boiling water or whatever on the burner.
With the removable grease tray, which just slides right out, makes this the easiest stove to clean, hands down. The grill plate is even dishwasher safe.

Everything I Expected!

First off I'd like to say to those who wrote negative comments about temp and cleaning problems.....spare us PLEASE. This thing is great. The Propane tanks (16.4oz) can be bought just about anywhere (hardware store) from $2.99-3.99. ea. Cleaning is easy, and made easier by using your head and applying a sheet of tinfoil (poke a hole for drainage)under the grill portion (daaaah!). Easy instructions, and I was up and cooking in less than 3 minutes. Heating control? What, you think this is a $500 home gas stove with all the fixings? It turns on and off with ease, with slight variations in temp. Just put your food on, pay attention, and your eating in no time. Have fun and enjoy a great stove!

Best grill for the money

I bought this grill yesterday at the store, and i was so excited i had to go home and use it for the first time. This thing is extremely impressive. I cooked up some hot dogs and pierogies in literally less than 5 minutes from frozen. I was so excited that i wanted to try to boil water to see how long it would take. The stove boiled 16oz of water in less than 2 minutes which is quite impressive. I am looking forward in using this on many camping trips so i hope it holds up!

Coleman Signature InstaStart REVIEW

I really like coleman products. I have a coleman cooler from the 70's and still in decent shape.
This grill is versatile and you can cook a dinner for 5 in under 45 mins. That's a pound of chicken cutlets and macaroni and cheese. Lightweight and easy to light. The only thing that I don't like is that the side wind guards do not stay secured. In windy conditions (Hither Hills Camping) the wind guards kept coming free from the lid. Other then that this is a really good product.

Never again

If I could return it today I would. I wanted a camp stove not a bar-b-que. I should have know by the picture on the box: 30 something girl, shirt open, on a deck with a big smile. #1 too big to pack around on a camping trip. #2 the attachment of the propane canister hose to the stove is difficult to use, the nut is too short. #3 the grill heats unevenly, it should be two small circular burners to allow for even cooking. #4 The side burner is too small, it takes forever to boil water. #5 should have come with the hot plate included, which I bought, (like camp chief) for the money this turkey cost. So I am in this for about ....... my mistake. I hope someone at Coleman or Cabela's reads this and gives me my money back. Sorry guys.

Not A Perfect Stove

I bought this camp stove to bring along on my Jeep adventures. The grill portion seemed awesome as a few staples of trail food are burgers and hot dogs. It is .... with a few caveats

I've found the temperature has two settings. Off and High. Makes cooking things a bit tricky.

The grill is VERY difficult to clean. I've scrubbed and scrubbed and can't get the silver part under the grill clean. I've given up at this point.

As a few other reviewers stated the push button starter function is great however if you're not holding the grill down the grill will actually move backwards before the push button start is pressed.

If I still had the box I would definitely be taking this grill back.

Will not work for what I needed it for.

We purchased this grill/stove combo with a 13"X13" griddle thinking we could use the stove for boiling water, etc, the grill for grilling, and the griddle could be placed over the grill to cook sausage, bacon, etc. After getting home and taking the new grill/stove out we found the warning that says pots, pans, griddles cannot be used over the grill portion. Apparently the grill portion will get to hot and melt. This item will be returned for a regular two burner stove that can actually handle heat.

Same old same old

Coleman continues to overlook the same old problems with their camp stoves. As with old models, this model is rather bulky and clunky. The parts don't fit well together lending it the feel of an old soviet auto. The fuel line is difficult to screw on because the body of the stove juts out beyond the fitting. Not recommended.

I miss my old one...

An accident took our last Coleman stove/grill and this was its replacement. The side flaps have a horrible tendency to fall down when bumped and it's nearly impossible to clean this one in our small apartment sink. If the top came off (as our old one did) and the side flaps were attached to the lid (as our old one was) it would be possible to attempt a cleaning. It's also very hot, even at its lowest setting. Hoping the next version is better so we can return this and try again...

Car camping necessity

This stove was great for car camping. We just stayed in Big Bend for 4 days and given that there was a burn ban which restricted use of the charcol park grills, we would have been lost without it. Even given the windy nights in the Chisos Basin, the grill stayed lit. We even removed the grates and made smores!

The only thing I didn't like (which is minor) is that once the grill is closed it is tough to carry with no handle.

Good but not great

I bought this for family camping trips. It is ok to clean and to take care of though the Electric Igniter does not work. The equipment it self seems very flimsy. It boiled water quickly and heated food great. I use it only for family car camping.
