Tailored & Slimmer than the original!

I have three pairs of Snake River I (SR1) shorts and I am 5'9" 150 lbs/33" waist and a Small/11"inseam in the SR1 fit me perfectly which wasn't cool since I normally wear a medium in every other brand.
This year with the Snake River 2 (SR2) Columbia shortened the inseam to 9 inches and made the sizes more tailored to fit how they ARE SUPPOSED TO FIT. So now with the SR2 shorts I wear a Medium/9"inseam and they actually fit perfectly. In fact the SR2's Medium fits slimmer than the SR1's small.
So diehard SR1 folks may want to size up when buying SR2 shorts-also the tags on the SR2 clearly says 'Slimmer Fit' in big bold print to let you know to try them on before ripping all the tags off.
Columbia made the fabric and stitched-seams thinner on the SR2 so it dries much quicker than the SR1. Because I also use my SR shorts for hiking and rock climbing I quickly realized the SR2's are not as durable as the SR1's but if you are buying these mainly for water sports or the beach then they will be fine for that.
My biggest gripe with the SR2 is pockets. All of them are smaller than the SR1. Except the back pocket which is actually bigger/deeper but my gripe here is the back pocket is no longer a zippered pocket. It has a flimsy patch of Velcro barely keeping it closed so you can no longer keep valuables in there. The SR2 no longer has the hidden coin/key pocket inside the mesh lining that the SR1 had.
Over all I like the SR2 shorts for the better color options, fit and lighter fabric but I will definitely be keeping and wearing my SR1 shorts whenever I can.

Good alternative to North Face Class V

I an a retired outdoor activist and wear shorts like these 365 days a year, often under fleece or sweats in the winter. I prefer North Face Class V short but they apparently don't make them anymore -- at least not the way they used to. These are a good alternative though the sizing is smaller and the waistband not so hot. I like these, they serve me well riding the bike, hiking and around water, and the fit is fine and the feel is good. They come in cool colors including actual navy, also. That latter color is, for whatever reason, somewhat difficult to find.

Lots of pockets

I really like these for long distance hiking. They stay cool wash easily and dry quickly. It's too bad the belt is so screwy. They attach a good nylon belt to some flimsy, whimpy elastic that stretches far too easily. They'd be better with a belt that is one piece that goes all of the way around my waist.

I would buy this product again and again

What I like about these shorts most is the solid braided belt that sinches securely. Infact, that is why I purchased these shorts. I will not buy shorts that have an elastic belt. You are forever adjusting the waist on them.

Also, they have no velcro, so they can be washed with other more delicate items.

best version yet

I wear these all summer for everything -- wet or dry. The new belt is a big improvement.

All Around Short

The unattached belt is a plus over Columbia's other shorts

Negative Reviews:

Not very happy. Sizes TERRIBLR

I ordered ALL nine pairs in size large, same style shorts just different collors. They came as if I ordered 3 small, 2 medium a couple of large and one pair of XXL. Just terrible in size variation from one pair to the next. One black pair was OK and the next black pair was was 2 sizes too large. So collor did not matter. Should have sent entire order back. And seams on 3 of them are already ripping, VERY poor for Columbia if in fact they are.

Strangely Cut

These shorts just do not fit right. I'm not sure I've encountered anything like it. I should have listened to others who complained that they're cut with an odd waist to leg ratio. I tried medium. I returned them for large. I returned them and decided to keep using my three earlier versions of these Columbia shorts. I've worn them backpacking for years and love them.

were these made on Friday?

Didn't get any use because I had to send back for size exchange, which cost half what I paid. I own plenty of Columbia gear so this surprised me.

Neutral Reviews:

run smaller than version I

I have a pair of version I. I really like those (and still wear them a lot), so purchased 2 more only to find that version II size small is smaller than version I size small. I could not get into the new size small, and I had to return them for size medium.
