I bought one of these shirts for summer last year, then quickly snapped up two more. They're a lifesaver in the desert heat. I was actually in the market for a camping/hiking shirt, but the Sun Goddess is classy enough to wear around town as well. It's loose fitting and non-clingy, but the styling and the drape of the fabric keep it from looking too frumpy.
The fabric's thin and light, which feels great, but it also means that the white version is slightly transparent when wet. Nothing too bad, but it might bother some people. The fabric also gets pretty funky in the armpit area after a few wearings, but it washes easily in the sink and dries in a snap. When camping in hot weather, I periodically douse the whole shirt and put it on soaking wet, which both prevents the BO from building up and provides some valuable evaporative cooling services. Above 85 degrees (low humidity), it's bone dry in about an hour.
The sun-protection properties have worked great for me so far, but my shirts have an open collar with no top button, which has led to a few triangle-shaped chest sunburns. It looks like the 2012 version of the shirt has corrected that problem and includes a collar button.
The shirt and velcro do not go well together; the few spots where I've had accidental velcro snags have pilled badly. That's the only pilling I've experienced, but I've never carried a heavy backpack while wearing this shirt, so I don't know how it responds to friction.
The sizing seems accurate; I'm 5'10/athletic/36B/broad-shouldered and wear a large. The XL was like a tent, and the Medium was snug in the shoulders. The length is great for me, but might look like a dress on a shorter person. I assume the smaller sizes are correspondingly shorter.
All told, this is my favorite warm weather shirt. I wear one every weekend from spring to fall, and am gradually building up a collection in case Columbia ever stops making them.
Beautiful Shirt but Delicate
I purchased the shirt for travel. I wash and hang it to dry over night.
I like wearing this shirt, but I can't wear anything with webbing or velcro. I wore a waist bag that contained a little camera. At the end of the day, the fabric pilled at the sides where the belt rubbed the most. So I tucked the blouse in my pants and wore the bag below the waistline.
The shirt has two tiny breast pockets which are useless for storage.
I am 5 ft 2 inches. So the sleeves are too long and the wrist cuff is too big. I have to fold the cuff and sew it, which means I can't button the cuff.
Sun time is Comfort Time!
I bought this shirt to help in my ongoing quest to avoid sunburns. I have extremely sensitive skin, and have gotten burnt from something as simple as riding in the car, windows up, WITH sunscreen on.
This shirt is FABULOUS. I keep it in my outside kit along with my sunglasses, sunscreen, and sun hat. It seems to resist wrinkling and the sun protection in the fabric works GREAT. It's been to the zoo, to the beach, and on hikes already. It seems to dry quickly and definitely didn't feel like a typical long sleeved shirt.
It also looks nice enough to be worn for events other than slogging through the woods.
I love everything about this shirt, the great fit, the comfort, the colors but I have one HUGE issue that stopped me from buying this shirt and that is the word COLUMBIA writing in colors in sharp contrast on the shoulder. I wanted to wear this to work and I can't as it is. If Columbia had made the word in the same color or along the hemline or on the pocket and made the option to tuck in the flap into the pocket, then I would have purchased every color but there is not getting around their label. How unfortunate.
Best over 50 shirt for women
This is a tailored design that works well for women over 50 with a V-neck and collar, darts that provide for enough shape, hip length and long sleeves which hold to 3/4 or buttoned short sleeved; all of the design categories that compliment a 50+ woman. This shirt requires little care, can be worn with a camisole or tank underneath, has sun protection and is great for working and hiking. My only complaint is that it has not been made in more colors. I own every color in this piece.
I had been looking for something light that would protect my arms from the sun as I hike and do a lot of gardening. This shirt does the job. I did get a larger size than normal but the longer sleeve length also protects the back of my hands. I really like the light weight. It's very comfortable.
Good travel shirt
I wore this shirt almost every day when I was traveling in SE Asia. The shirt was great because it was dressy enough to allow me into more formal places, but also very comfortable and breathable during the hot, humid afternoons. The pleats in the front make it more flattering than most shirts of this kind.
The perfect shirt on the trail
Wore this shirt for the first time while visiting the monarch overwintering sites in Mexico at 10,000 feet elevation. Lightweight and comfortable to wear. Came out of the suitcase without a wrinkle. I'll look for another in a different color. Can't think of anything I don't like about it.
Great shirt for the hot sun
This shirt allows me to go out into the radiant sun at 7,500-10,000 ft. It fits well, dries easily, and has sleeves that roll up and button as the day wears on. I have washed it repeatedly, and it looks as good as the day I bought it.
Great looking shifrt
Looks great, good fit, nice color, I have the shirt in green. I have received numerous compliments when wearing this shirt. Can wear the sleeves either long or just roll them up, looks good either way. As an added bonus it provides sun protection as well.
